Is Optus Sport Dead? (No More EPL)

Stan Sport is taking over the English Premier League from Optus starting with the 2025–26 season in August. It’s part of a hefty $300 million deal that sees Nine Entertainment (Stan’s parent company) pay around $60 million a year, while Optus still chips in $40 million annually during the transition.
This marks the end of an era for Optus Sport, which first nabbed the EPL rights back in 2016. Stan’s now stacking its football lineup with not just the EPL, but also the FA Cup, Japan’s J League, and Korea’s K League

Without the EPL what is the point of Optus sport? and why the hell did they throw so much $$$ at it in the 1st place to just walk away from the rights? The kicker is they are still paying 40m for Stan (Nine Entertainment) to take the rights..

Ill also note the EPL deal is signficantly higher then the A-League deal with 10/Paramount which i also find amazing - i hope sooner or later both the AL and EPL can be on the same platform the seperation from the EPL on streamig has killed the AL

Champions league and premier league at one place. Finally something good for us and worth spending money on Stan Sports.

Expect a price increase on Stan subs.

I think Optus is trying to move out of the sports market in general, I don't think they're seeing the commercial gains they wanted or are cost cutting etc. Give it another year or two and you'll probably see Optus Sport shut down for good. It's a shame though, I quite enjoyed having it on Optus.

    • the talk is once stan get the EPL the rest of the optus stuff will come over too and they will close optus sport once every user has been migrated a few weeks into the new season

Optus Sport has been an absolute shitshow I can't wait for them to be gone. It's like the dialup of sports streaming.

    • It has its positives and negatives - the highlights options are good but the panalist and lack of interesting football discussion was another level of rubbish esp when you compare it to Foxtel

The issue it had was because it 'left the A league and Socceroos' to another source there was nothing to relate back to Australian football itself like Bosnic and Slater used to do. Ie transfer rumors etc

Ange getting the job at Totenham was a God send as it gave them something to talk about as we dont have a lot of players in top European leagues (none in the EPL at the moment)

I do think Stan having the UCL and EPL is a good combo but i do think the Domestic game needs to be on the same platform if anything the A league is dying without with synergies it gets from being on the same platform as the EPL

Its about time you signed up for streaming with the individual sport/comp instead of a 'package' of a bunch of crap you aren't interested in just to get you favourite sport.

I get it, the sport code wont get a butt ton of money for the 'rights' and wont have the 'expertise' of the broadcast platforma and camera crews but surely itd be better for the fans. They could contract out the stream service via another platform, but host it on their own site.

    • I entirely agree with you, however for the most part I don't think they care much for the fans, it's all about the commercial value and they know the majority of fans will pay it anyway.

  • Optus is getting out of content altogether

It's a shame in a way, because I like their offering a lot more than Kayo, and find the app and connection to be far steadier. I absolutely love Optus sport's various mini games you can watch, depending on the time you have.

    • Yea Kayo is a straight up rip off - its content levels has dropped off but its prices have seemed to rise….?

      • Yeah, only reason for Kayo is got a few NRL and AFL fans in the household, but it's getting harder and harder to justify the ever increasing price. Think we are currently on a low rate through a Yello deal on the combank app, but will be reviewing whether we keep it once NRL/AFL season is over.

but it's getting harder and harder to justify the ever increasing price.

          just alternate between 2 or 3 accounts…

they're always sending me $1 per month for premium on my closed accounts.

        • It will be interesting to see what happens with Kayo now DAZN bought it. They have a lot of football rights in other countries.

As a rugby fan i can say that Stan has a very similar range of mini-game/highlights options, and no ads in them. This should be a massive win if they don't mess with their current system.

  • attempting to cry

  • My Optus Sport annual subscription of $159 just got deducted from my account on 17/6/25…now what?

If Optus Sports completely shuts down, you'll receive a pro-rated refund. See Clause 5.6(b)(ii) of the Customer terms. If they continue just without the EPL, you're stuffed.

My god what will I do without the top notch commentary and analysis from Mark Bosnich (and I’m a United fan). He has to be the worst pundit of any sport ever.
