    That's almost $20K for a family of four… 😲

How much is the mandatory tipping per person?

    • -2

While it’s not mandatory, I think it’s highly recommended. Here is what I found:

      Tipping:
The service and tourism industry in most countries has a strong tipping culture which is different to what we
      have in Australia.
Tipping is an increasingly common practice in all areas of the service industry, but particularly in
restaurants, bars and taxis. Tipping for good service is part of everyday life in Europe. It is common to tip
around 5%-10% of the total amount in restaurants, cafes and bars.
On some days HolidayMax may arrange local guides to show you around a destination. If you enjoyed their
tour, we suggest you leave them with a small token of your appreciation. We suggest 2 to 3 pounds/euros
      per person is about right.
At the end of your tour, you will have the opportunity to thank your HolidayMax Tour Leader and driver by
offering them a tip. While tipping them is not mandatory it is a way to reward them for all the hard work they
have done. We suggest somewhere between 3 to 5 pounds or 4 to 6 euros per person per day for the tour
leader and a similar amount for the driver.

Tipping for good service is part of everyday life in Europe.

No it's not. That is an 'American' thing…

      • +2

4 to 6 euros per person per day

So about 100€ per person (about $180 AUD per person) for the 17 days.

So for a family of four, you are looking at over $700 AUD in tips…

For a bus with 50 people, they get about $9,000 in tips for 17 days… Not a bad gig if you can get it…

      • I presume you are associated with this business? Should this not be flagged?

  • +5

Spending 5K to visit 7 countries in 14 nights is just a waste of money and time.
Better spend the two weeks in your favorite 1-2 countries and have a deeper view in it.

    • +1

Given the cheapest date is september, flights that period are around ~$2k+ (What's "premium airline" to them?), so you're essentially spending 3k for a 2 week contiki.

I mean… if main meals are covered its okay but wouldn't write home about it.

      edit: that site is horrible.

      • -1

yeah site is no good, why every date selection it is adding extra thousands on top. Misleading?

        • -1

          his example is misleading yes.

You can technically do SYDNEY NOV 26 FRI 06 and get the price in the deal.

          • @TexasVujicic: Selection for Melbourne is $50. Then all the dates add extra thousands

            • -1

@Zeee: Oh i agree mate. not arguing that it isn't misleading.
His example he provided as well

Cheapest date is 22 September 2026 from Sydney

              is incorrect.

It's a rort if you don't get the absolute cheapest deal imo.

              • @TexasVujicic: Naah… Not arguing, was just clarifying. Then this deal is no deal.

              • +1

@TexasVujicic: Price for 22 September was $4749 but now has increased. Pricing for tour like this is dynamic and constantly changing. First come first serve for the cheapest price, like flight ticket I guess. But when posting the deal, that date was the cheapest. So I wasn’t trying to mislead.

          • +1

@TexasVujicic: I did include in the title the word “From”. As with any tour deal, the price is always depending on travel dates. Why are you accusing me of misleading?

      • Can you elaborate why site isn’t good?

        • So confusing

    • +3

That’s personal preference. Some people prefer visiting more places.

    • +3

Spending 5K to visit 7 countries in 14 nights is just a waste of money and time.

You've clearly never gone to Oktoberfest with Contiki !!!

      • +4

        No, I haven't.
Always stay away from the crowd so I can enjoy the best ticket, car rental and hotel price.
Professional OZBer is always lonely. ;)

    • Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

  • they didnt mention about about children?

  • +2

This is like a 30+ Contiki lmao

  • All good dates sold out, plus every other date is like +$2000 extra so is it really a deal?

    • You can select "nov 2026" which doesn't have an added cost to get the "value" he is seeing.

      • +1

        Everydate has additional

    • -1

22 September is a good month and doesn’t incur additional costs. I would think most tours would have surcharge that time of the year.

      • its + $1300 for both melb or sydney departure,,,

  • September a good month to visit?

    • +1

Honestly it's pretty good depending where in Europe. further south the weather is still amazing. Shoulder period so it's not as busy as well.

anything north of the alps and it starts to get pretty cool (still warmer than melbourne at least)

    • +1

September is my favourite month to visit Europe. A bit quieter and more temperate.

    • Yep, its right at the end of their summer and coming off peak tourism period.
Less people around and still get good weather.

    • Not sure why everyone is saying its quieter, like, maybe it is relative to July. But last time I went to Europe was in Oct and it was pretty crowded (Italy and Croatia).

    • Thanks. Considering but worried if Sept-Oct would be raining season

      • You always risk rain but if you have a raincoat and umbrella then it isn’t that much of an issue. One of our enduring memories was visiting the Arena di Verona and listening to a chorus of people, under umbrellas, practicing the chorale from Beethoven’s Ninth. Totally unexpected and just magic.

Personally I think this trip spends too short a time in each location. I would plan your own trip. Spend three days in each location and travel by train or plane between them.

I would do Paris, Interlaken, Florence, Venice, Rome.

  • $4749 not for any date?

  • IMHO it is too short in each location and there will be travel time between countries.

  • +7

1 night in a country is an absolute waste of time imo.

Arrive, only get a few hours to do try and do things, go to sleep, wake up and straight back on the tour to the next place.

    • -2

1 night in a country is an absolute waste of time imo.

      Just do days only then.

  • +4

Spend more time travelling between countries, than actually doing things, so for those reasons I’m out.

  • +3

    Please really research and analyse
Very long periods on the bus from A to B - calculate / google hours
Arrive at destination late and don't see much as daylight you spent on the bus.
Most places your visiting is mainly outside viewing only - you can look at pictures and achieve the same thing
view distance from CBD to hotel and visa versa
youtube all the optional tours and see if really worth doing

please consider doing a trip yourself without a tour.

  • Cheapest date is 22 September 2026

Is it normal to book a holiday that far in advance? That's 449 days in advance (counting from today), which is 1 year, 2 months and 23 days…

    • +1

Please never book anything over a year.
The company could go bankrupt and you have lost all your $$ or
You have to deal with insurance companies for refund etc.
Plus if a war starts, then you are definitely never cover by insurance
There are honestly lots of vacancies, just call and you will see
My friend booked a Europe trip with HolidayMax in Feb. 2025 for May from Melb. - there was vacancies.
Compare tour companies and what they actually offer.

  • +3

    Cheaper and better to diy.
Also, go month earlier to Spain to see the total solar eclipse.
