Final Energy Bill but No Change Requested

So I unexpectedly received a final energy bill (by email). Has my identity been stolen or can anyone say they are moving in which would trigger a disconnection on my account?
I've called the retailer and there is a 25 business day investigation time. I would like to get a head start if the former.

Logging into online portal confirms that my account is in the process of disconnection.

Did not receive any email notification from retailer that a request to disconnect / switch had been received. Seems a bit dumb.

Any ideas on how I could further investigate? Or possible other causes.

  • Could just be a cheeky company rep who kept your details. Hopefully they get caught and it’s nothing serious.

Personally, I’d be checking all my accounts carefully but not mass closing everything just yet.

  • Final Energy Bill but No Change Requested

    Request a change back

If you are the owner, they can always cancel changes to move.

    • unfortunately the transfer has already occurred so they cannot (allegedly)

      • so switch back from the new provider.

  • Not sure if possible, but someone might have accidentally typed in your address while churning providers. With any luck, you'd get free energy from now on.

    • Yeh the idea of free energy was appealing, but I know people in the area steal mail and have a slight worry maybe they will pretend they live at this property if they have their name on the energy bill. It seems crazy that anyone could just overwrite an existing connection without identity matching but this seems possible based on what I've heard so far.

I had the same happen - report it here if they cant sort out immediately. https://www.ewov.com.au/
    That helped me a lot.

Also check you gas if you have gas, as both my electricity and gas were affected for me. The gas was a pain as my account was closed, they put me on a worse plan and the bpay details changed causing my payments to go nowhere for a while.
For the electricity it happened in peak summer when my bill is normally a credit due to solar, fortunately that was fixed quickly.

  • When some new people bought the house next door, they changed both our electricity and gas plans, because they got the house numbers confused.
We were always worried, what else could they have changed.
