AmEx Travel Credit Booking Cancellation - Best Way to Do It?

Used a Amex credit (that was about to expire last year) + some payment on top to book some hotel bookings (fully refundable).

Had some family medical stuff pop up, and cant go.

In the past cancelling a booking with an Amex credit meant you lose it. But I have heard contradictions to this lately.

Is there a best way to do it?

Tried calling the hotel to change the dates, but looks like we need to go direct via amex travel?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. PM if it's a bit of a 'secret' approach.

Cheers all.

  • Doesn't your insurance cover it?

  • ohh no

  • In the past, I've found Amex have always refunded the travel credit if the booking is fully refundable. I know this isn't what the t&c say but that has been my experience over many years. That being said, I've always mentally accepted that if I'm cancelling accommodation I'm not expecting the travel credit refund, I've just been pleasantly surprised. I've cancelled online and, back when they actually had a top class travel agency, via phone.

    • Cheers. So did the cancellation over the phone?

    • Just tried the cancel button under the My Bookings. Gave an error message, Maybe because its outside hours.

Interesting that there is no mention of the cancellation terms anywhere under the 'My Bookings' listings. Surely that should be in the booking summary.

So just did a dummy booking again, and saw the hotel could be cancelled up to 3 days in advance. So should be fine.

Well yeah, AmEx travel are travel agents and they handle the booking

I did it a couple of months ago, they just refund the FULL amount and they didn't take the Travel back. Just use the online chat feature and they can cancel for you and confirm the refund. Keep a copy of the chat for your record.
