  • Anyone had luck with amex recently

    • Still in cooling period.

      • +1

        How long is cooling period?

        • +1

          18 months

          • @codyy: Does this mean 18 months after I cancelled my previous card I am a New American Express Card Member again?

  • +9

The virgin equivalent is a much stronger offering IMO. Free return flight every year rather than a travel credit, free lounge access every time you fly and two guest passes and much better reward seat availability when you're actually looking to spend your points.

Especially good value if you're in Perth because your free return flight can get you to Sydney or Melbourne return, which can otherwise easily cost upwards of $700.

    • +1

It's my favourite card so far and I regret cancelling it when I last had it. I fly from Perth and the return domestic flight is amazing value

      • How easy was it to use that free return flight? Sounds pretty good from Perth

        • +1

Pretty easy - just Google "compflight Amex" and click on the first link. You'll be asked to sign in to your velocity account that is linked to the card and then can book the flight as normal, no payment needed.

    • +3

Could you please link the Virgin equivalent? :o This sounds great

    • How easy/hard is it to use that free return flight? Are there any limitations when it comes to what flights you can book with it?

  • -3

I currently have this card and never knew it had travel credit and lounge passes! How do I claim those? Amex website sticks and doesn't say anything?

    • +1

Amex travel website. And can only be used on Qantas flights.

  • If I'm the primary holder of this card currently and my wife secondary. Can she apply for the card as primary to get the bonus?. Eventually she's currently a secondary card holder

    • +2

Yes she can apply and be a primary.
      Supp doesn't count

  • -1

Does anyone know if the Centurion lounge access has to be tied to a Qantas flight? Or a flight purchased with the Amex. Got an international flight coming up so wondering if I can use it then.

    • +1

Centurion lounge access is not tied to the airline is how I read it.
Only the Qantas lounge passes are

      • Thanks for the reply!

  • Literally applied yesterday (when prior offer was expiring - 50k) and was approved instantly.
Does anyone have exp on talking to CS to have them upgrade the offer to the current deal.
Card is still in the post/hasn't been made yet so other than being approved, I haven't activated/utilised the card yet.
Plan on keeping the card longer term so kinda biffed the deal has improved significantly in the last day.

    • Can I ask what's ur churn history prior to applying for this

      • No churn. Last card was CBA closed 2 years ago to the day. That was held for at least 3 years and was only card. Have been a secondary AMEX card holder for 4 years and decided to get my own.

    • +3

AMEX CS has been good in my experience.
I applied in Jan when it was a 60k offer and was approved immediately.
A week later, the 100k offer was released. Called up to ask if it could be adjusted to the latest offer and they processed the 40k difference.

      • Thanks mate that's reassuring. Will buzz them tn!

  • Any churners got it through?

    • Yep. just now

      • How many churned in last 2 years and how many have you got open

    • Applied but no instant approval. The usual we'll get back to you in 5-10 days let down
~6 cards over the last 2 years

  • +1

Is that genuinely equivalent to $450 worth of flights, or do they mark up the prices or add restrictions that reduce the actual value?

    • +1

See for yourself - https://www.americanexpress.com/en-au/travel/flights - whatever Qantas flights you can find on there, you can use your $450 credit towards.

In reality it's never worth $450 because Qantas aren't the cheapest airline - there would always be a ghetto flight that would have got you there for less dollars.

      • -1

Not everyone wants to fly the cheapest airline. This isn't "OzPayTheLowestPriceNoMatterWhat"

  • As a churner, I tried applying again and got the standard email saying they'd get back to me in 5-10 business days (i.e. likely rejected again).

  • Planning to cancel my current Qantas card from another bank as it will be 1 year next month, will I be considered as a churner if I apply for this one?

  • Just applied and got instant approval even though I already have a 15k limit credit card. I forgot to set the limit, hopefully amex doesn't give me a large one.

    • How mang months you held the 15k card for? Do you have any other cards in last 2 years?

      • I had 2 15k credit cards but closed one of them 3 months ago (so credit report has time to show the new status). The amex application also did not ask for any evidence (e.g, payslips).

        • So your churn history in 2 years is not much then

  • If you cancel the flight, what happens to the credit? Does it go back to your account? Is the expiry of the refunded credit same as before or extended?
Or des it go back to your account like a statement credit?

    • As per the T&C if you cancel the flight, the credit is forfeited.
However there is a trick where if you cancel the flight before 11:59pm on the same day of booking it, you will get a statement credit of the full amount ($450). See here
Last confirmed working couple of months ago though, I actually need to do this later today.

      • How'd you go with that, still working?

        • +1

I cancelled the booking today, need to wait for tomorrow or day after to see if the credit appears

        • +2

Got the credit, so can confirm still working as of today

          • @nategasm: Legend, thanks for confirming! Time to get mine over and done with as well

            • @FrugalFrella: did you receive the credit in your account after cancelling?

          • @nategasm: What's the expiry of the credit? Still the same?

            • +1

              @ultrondev: Still 12 months I believe

              • @nategasm: Oh I meant does the new credit reset and gives you 1 more year?

                • +1

@ultrondev: Not sure what you mean, the credit resets every 12 months on your card anniversary date so you basically have all the time in between to "use" it like I have

      • Just booked Qantas flight with the travel credit, and cancelled after 15 mins.
Hopefully, by tomorrow the credit will appear and the charges should drop off by weekend.

        • Confirming the trick still works as of 24 July. Credit received, now just waiting for the pending charges to drop.

          • +1

@gkh84: Also works if you cancel a flexible flight after the 24 hours IME

          • @gkh84: I confirmed it still works now, got the $450 back. Book qantas flight and then refund straight away.

            • @dav3e: so no fees at all? do you have to book one of the flex tickets for that to work?

              • @Indomie5: I booked the cheapest Economy so doesn't matter what ticket type, the full amount is refunded as long as you cancel before 11:59pm same day. (At least as of above date)

                • +3

@nategasm: Can confirm still working 11/9/25. Booked a fully refundable flight for 1k, cancelled 5 mins later and credit came in 13/9/25. The flight charge is still pending but it should drop off soon.

Any churners had any luck recently? Was rejected by AMEX in January, had two other cards since then (last application in May). Haven't had an AMEX since 2021, so way outside the 18 month cooldown, but seem to be stuck on the naughty list for churning.

  • +4

80k via qantas website. cant post as a deal due to referral link issues
    https://cardsandbanking.qantas.com/compare-credit-cards?sort…

    • Thanks for that 80k offer link.

I applied but got the dreaded "We will notify you of the outcome within 5 - 10 business days." again.

  • Thanks OP.

Any idea when the $450 travel credit is applied, or how to tell it's in the account?

Signed up, but cannot see it anywhere on the travel portal…

    • +1

It usually shows it when you login to the Amex Travel portal, somewhere near your name and also in prices when you search for Qantas flights that cost more than $450.
It may take some time for it to appear after getting your card (I forgot how long mine took)

      • Thanks.

        This afternoon it's now appeared.

Looks like it did require those few additional days.
