China Eastern: Melbourne to Venice $1072, Rome $1093, Budapest $1096 Return (2x23kg Bags; Aug, Oct & Nov) @ Google Flights

610

Not sure how everyone feels about China Eastern, and I can't comment as I haven't flown them myself, but those prices! Can't say they're not bargains. With some dates in summer (August), too.
These are via Shanghai, and some of the stops are long but you have options: China Eastern offers free transit accom if you have a stop over 6 hours and meet the criteria, otherwise, most are daytime stops so also possible to go spend a day in Shanghai (you don't need a visa for short stays).

Melbourne to Venice $1072
Melbourne to Rome $1093
Melbourne to Budapest $1096

  • Wow so cheap, any real experience from people here

    • +4

I've flew with them twice now to Europe. IMHO, they are a good airline. New plane, service and good was good also. I had an 8 hr stopover on the way there and 4 hrs on the way back in Guangzhou but I was able to get a transit visa to get out of the airport for the 8 hrs transit. I would recommend them.

      • I gather this was before the visa free requirements for Australians?

        • +6

No, the visa free requirements was already in place. But due to the short stayover, if its greater than 8 hrs then you can get a short 24 hrs transit visa out of the airport. If your transit is less than 8 hrs then they won't let you have a transit or the visa free pass out.

          • +1

@JsMIT: I thought ppl travelling with AU passports get 30 days visa-free into China….that would be pretty shitty if the visa-free deal came with caveats.

          • +1

@JsMIT: Yes! I had a horrible experience! Mine was 8 hours, by the time I got to immigration - they did not let me! Had to spend agonising 8 hours in a shitty lounge at Shanghai… believe me it was shitty!

I flew china eastern to Japan in January. Shanghai airport stole my powerbank and Nanjing airport put us in transfer jail for a few hours before releasing us into airport. Other than that flights were decent food was good, entertainment not great.

      • Not sure why an airport would need to steal your power bank. I forgot to take my kindle with me after crossing security in Shanghai airport and emailed them to see if they found it. Picked it up at lost and found on the way back from my trip to Europe.

        • +5

China has different rules about power banks on planes.

A power bank you can usually fly with will often get taken off you in China.

          • @Grunef: I was carrying 99.9 Wh power banks on all my flights in China last month. Same max as every other airline/country, though they do ban use while in flight.

          • @Grunef: True, I do agree on that point, but that's just following regulations, not stealing. Wrong choice of word that insinuates worse behaviour than it is.

          • @Grunef: Not my experience last year in China. I was able to carry my powerbank in my carry on.

I wonder how Shanghai airport stole ur powerbank when u flew to Japan, even u did went to Shanghai airport how did they stole ur powerbank? The 3c requirement only out for about a week.

        • It wasn't the 3c requirement it was just too big (although they said I could have it if I took it to a certain counter at a certain part of the airport, but I didn't have time as I had a short connection). Probably should've checked beforehand. Was fine going through security in aus, but not in china.
Not saying this is a bad thing, just expect tighter security with a transfer through China.

      • +3

Same thing happened to me. Did not allow me to take my powerbank onboard even though it was under the 100Wh limit, because it wasn't labelled as such on the powerbank.
For reference it was a 27,000mAh capacity powerbank, so it should've been just under the limit. (99.9)

Tried explaining to them in English - they couldn't understand. Then I switched to mandarin to explain how I got the 99.9Wh value, they still didn't understand how it works and took it.

    • They're fine, food isn't amazing but the Chinese love it so it's probably quite nice.

  • +1

I flew MEL>PVG>LHR in March this year. I'd say it's like a 24h flight in Economy. Food was fine. Massive 2x23kg baggage. Paid around $1500 return

  • +4

good airlines, flight crew speak english well but they assume you're chinese if your skin is yellow. Transit is nice, they scanned everyone passport again and the security is a bit tough but if you dont do anything illegal, there is nothing to worry.

  • Hey recently flew with china eastern from Beijing to Xian last month - short flight - similar to virgin - in terms of looks inside the flight . End of the day - I am person who does not give a damn about what the flight looks and entertainment - as long as it takes me safely to the destination- that’s all matters.

    • We did the same in May 2025 -
      Beijing to Xi'an
      Xi'an to Shanghai
Early flights - 2 hours with meal included
      Absolutely excellent

  • Will recommend them

  • +2

New planes, great value, decent food, limited entertainment (with some amusing PLA propaganda options), terrible booze, terrible transfer experience at Chinese airports, some crews seem obsessed with keeping the seatbelt sign on at the most miniscule turbulence. Overall, would(will) fly again for the value proposition. Best experienced mildly sedated.

One thing that they don't tell you but is a bit of a surprise when flying on the Chinese carriers is that they'll fly over Russia. Not a dealbreaker per se but could be something to take into consideration.

    • +4

And if your plane crashes, nobody will find out what happened.

    • +1

On a side note if you want to go to Russia at the moment via China is the cheapest and quickest way to get there!

      • Been that way for a long time comrade

    • I went on a ferry from Japan a while ago it was all pretty easy

Interesting! looking up in it, they stated the reasons; On 19 May 2025, in response to an open government information request, the CAAC said that it decided not to release an annual interim investigation report to the public because releasing the report might "endanger national security and societal stability".

This leads me to believe it was a deliberate crash rather than a faulty issue with the controls / boeing plane ..

      • +4

it was pilot suicide. they want the media shut up on this so less chance others will follow suite

        • I mean, tbh I'd rather it was an isolated pilot suicide as opposed to a mechanical issue that could affect other planes.

          • @max99: If you're worried about mechanical issues avoid Boeing 737 (best avoid any Boeing 7xx to be safe).

      • Australian is a legitimate target anyway, play stupid games win stupid prizes

  • Foods diabolical but the airlines good.

  • +2

Flew China Eastern to Paris last year and it was great. Better than Qantas imo for service, plane type, food, and entertainment offered. Fantastic baggage allowance as well. Full service airline similar to China Southern.

    Would recommend both easily.

  • +2

    Not going into a Boeing

    • I can bet you are from any south asian country

  • They are decent. The lounge in Shanghai is super nice

    • How do you get into them? I don't spend enough for Amex

  • +1

    I can't comment as I haven't flown them myself

I did, and to keep it simple, don't.
There are plenty other, better options if you just want a cheap and decent connection flight via China, China Southern, Hainan, and more.

  • Flew business class to Rome and Istanbul. Airport lounges at PVG are not good. Average service. Not sure if I would fly again

  • You can also add two free stopovers in Shanghai, 15 days each direction.

    • How do you do that? I tried on Google flights selecting multi city option (Shanghai stopover on the way back) and price shot up by $250.

      • @Imposter are you able to please explain how you got the free stopovers?

        • I think there is no such way to add free stopover for 15 days. 'Imposter' is either confused or bluffing, else they would have responded.

    • I did that and stayed a night in Shanghai… was really good and explored main sites. It also broke up the trip back from Italy.

Train from airport to city is amazingly fast and an experience on its own

  • +1

BTW, their Boeing 777 are really old. The A350s are much better and newer aircrafts. Do not bother if it's the Boeing 777. Also, I do not think it's much worth flying via Shanghai to Europe. The travel time is a lot more! I do not think it's worth it. Plus the Shanghai airport is not nice. It has an old part which is like really dated and old. The new is not exciting. Plus the staff at Shanghai are arrogant. I can confirm that by travelling there a few times. It's an overall pretty bad experience.

  • I flew with them Syd - Amsterdam last year, super good, on the way over there it was an 8hs layover , but on the way back was much faster - would recommend, specially for that price - so cheap

  • China Eastern us one of the better operators in China. A thousand bucks for Europe is a good deal.

  • Flew biz to PVG a few months ago, was great.

  • Flew MEL -> PVG -> PEK, the airline was not too bad. Their inflight entertainment wasn't too great, food was pretty good. Only advice is to allocate some time to transferring. PVG airport feels like a complete mess, super disorganised and hectic when I transferring to domestic.

  • Been looking for good one ways for in the 600's… thought this might be the one, but they're still charging >800 for one way tickets.

    • Not sure where or when you're trying to go, but how about to Amsterdam one way for $620

  • flew with them last year Adelaide to Fiumicino for $900 one way. great experience in a dead Guangzhou airport with delicious cheap food. this year Queenstown to Milano is $1050 one way with EVA (Taipei city transit)
