Dell Monitor Won't Wake-up

Dell Curved Monitor - S3422DW

This is an ongoing issue but I find contacting Dell is much more hassles compared to this beautiful Community:-)) . It's out of warranty anyway. Hope someone can share their expertise.

Usually if I don't work on the computer for 15 minutes or so, I can wake-up the monitor easily, either by clicking the mouse or hit the keyboard.

However, if I leave it longer say one or two hours, it simply will not wake up! I have tried everything: hit the keyboard, move the mouse, control alternate delete, F1 2 3 4 5 and everything.

Usually when this happens, I have no choice but to shut down and restart it, by which I would lose everything I was working on. Very frustrating.

There are some buttons on the bottom right-hand side to say switching of cables. But none of them seems to exist.

Look at some YouTube which is funny because it started with a live screen….

Thanks and looking forward!

Sounds more like windows issues, similar situations happen to many windows laptop before because of windows horrible s1
    s2 sleep mode

    • Thanks, will check!

At risk of stating the obvious, have you tried monitor with different PC and vice versa?

What you describe sounds more like a power management issue with PC or GPU.

    • Thanks for the tip, have tried another monitor, same issue.

Maybe it was stung by Space bees?

It doesn't sound like a monitor issue to me. It sounds like a PC (windows power management options) or PC hardware issue (could be the graphics card) but unlikely.

I asked Copilot and this is what it came back with:

Thanks for the detailed description — that definitely sounds frustrating! Based on what you’ve shared about your Dell S3422DW curved monitor not waking up after being idle for a longer period, here are some troubleshooting steps and potential fixes you can try:

✅ 1. Check Power & Sleep Settings (Windows)
Sometimes Windows puts the monitor or USB devices into a deeper sleep state.

Go to Settings > System > Power & Sleep
Under Screen and Sleep, set both to Never (for testing)
Click Additional power settings > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings
Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting → Set to Disabled
Expand PCI Express > Link State Power Management → Set to Off
Expand Display > Turn off display after → Set to a longer time or Never

    ✅ 2. Update Graphics Drivers
Outdated or buggy GPU drivers can cause wake-up issues.

    Open Device Manager
    Expand Display adapters
Right-click your GPU (e.g., Intel, NVIDIA, AMD) > Update driver
Or go to the manufacturer’s website for the latest version

✅ 3. Check Monitor Input Source
Sometimes the monitor switches inputs or gets “stuck”:
Use the joystick button on the bottom-right of the monitor to manually select the correct input (e.g., DisplayPort or HDMI)
Disable Auto Input Source in the monitor’s settings if available

    ✅ 4. Disable Fast Startup
Fast Startup can cause issues with peripherals and monitors.

Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do
Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended)

    ✅ 5. BIOS & Firmware Updates
Sometimes the issue is with the motherboard or monitor firmware.

Check your PC or laptop manufacturer’s website for BIOS updates

Dell may have a firmware update for the S3422DW (check Dell Support)

✅ 6. Test with Another Cable or Port
Try a different HDMI or DisplayPort cable
Try a different port on your GPU
If possible, test the monitor with another computer to isolate the issue

    ✅ 7. Use a Wake Shortcut
If the system is still running but the display won’t wake, try:

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B — this resets the graphics driver and can wake the display
    🛠️ If All Else Fails
You can set your PC to never sleep and just turn off the monitor manually when stepping away. Not ideal, but it avoids losing work.

    • Oh wow, what a wealth of information!
      I'll check then out.
      Thanks a million!

      • It was AI generated, so take it with a grain of salt. But I found IT support is good from Copilot.

        • Haha, it's mind boggling

  • Yell loudly: WAKE UP JEFF DELL!

  • I have a Dell monitor that does that from time to time. When I Googled it is a known problem with that model. I thought it was the computer but it is the monitor. It has a sleep mode.

Is your monitor plugged into a power point? If so, and the tips above do not work, try turning off the monitor at the power point and turning it back on again. My power point is difficult to reach so bought a power cable with a switch ($10 on Ebay). That way, I can wake up my monitor with a quick flick of the switch.

    • Thanks for the tip, tried all that, no help.
It's a pity coz I like my big curve monitor…. instead of 2 monitors..

  • to me it sounds like a energy saving feature.

find the manual pdf and search it for energy saving features. try to turn them off.

    • Haha, this is good.
I have now changed it to "NEVER" on sleep mode…
      See how we go.
      Thanks.!

  • What happens if you unplug the HDMI/DVI/VGA cable and then plug it back in? I have the same problem with 1 of my Dell Monitors. I have 3 and all bought at the same time, I find I have to unplug the HDMI and then plug it back in to get it working.

It happens most often in the morning as its been sitting all night and after a Windows Restart.

I run my machine 24/7 and I believe it is a Windows issue more than a hardware issue with the monitor.

    • Thanks but tried that and it didnt work.

Yeah, will have to succumb to Windows 11 now….
