One of the first deals on an in-stock MicroSD Express 1TB card compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2. It's cheaper than the other stores I saw it available on Google which seem to hover around the $400-$430 mark (excluding Camera House which is preorder), but admittedly, it's still a premium over the only other 1TB card out there which is EB Games' inhouse brand 1TB card for $224.95 (note: not actually in stock anywhere, and quality/reliability is still unproven).

Surcharges: 0% direct deposit, 0.8% card, 1% PayPal, 2.2% Zip & Latitude.
Free delivery for metro only.

Before you ask, no, it is not the same as the garden variety MicroSD cards you can get at JB Hifi, Officeworks, etc. Unfortunately the naming convention and branding/size/etc can be misleading.

Per the JW.com.au listing

Power up Your Play
With up to 900MB/s read and 600MB/s write1, the Lexar® PLAY PRO microSDXCTM Express Card gives gamers an epic
performance power-up. With capacity up to 1TB, it also offers space for many AAA games and comes with a limited lifetime
warranty. 2 Plus, it's backwards-compatible with UHS-I host devices for added convenience

Revolutionary Performance
Thanks to its next-gen tech of PCIe and NVMe interface technologies that deliver up to 900MB/s read speed,1 the PLAY PRO microSDXCTM Express Card is a stunning 4x faster than typical UHS-I microSD cards

Personally, I'm waiting to see what other brands come out with as memory cards tend to go down in price over time (although not always!)… but if you're in need for more space for your Switch 2, and want more than the $80 Nintendo 256gb card, this is one (expensive) option.

Update If you leave it in your cart but don’t check out, you may get emailed a personalised coupon within an hour or two for a further $5 off.

This thing is the same price as a 4tb gen 4 nvme drive, crazy!

The price of these things had better drop quick!

    • +1

Fingers crossed with more Switch 2 on the market.

    • +4

yeah crazy. glad I pre-ordered the Atrix 1TB

    • +9

What kickback arrangement does nintendo have with lexar?

      • +1

It's funny, I actually thought it was the reverse for their branded SanDisk 256GB model at $79, one day that will be extremely expensive, but not at launch, I can't find 512GB for $140 or, 1TB for $280.

I think Nintendo 'may be' either buying in bulk form SanDisk to lower the price, or subsidising the cards, I could be wrong but its 'the best value' microSD EX card out there right now, last I checked.

Good reason to wait for the OLED switch 2 in a few years. Express cards will have come down in price enough to justify the higher console price lol.

    • +8

Haha yeah wait for switch 3 and express 2 cards haha

    • Gonna wait for the switch 4 so I can pick up switch 2 oled + 10tb storage card for $10 in a garage sale

  • -2

Usually the higher the capacity, the cheaper per GB.

    Nope.

  • Am I dreaming?

for some reason even though I don't have any game consoles or a switch I got recommended this new microSD express card youtube video.

it said only the Sandisk one shows high write speed claims. the other brands (including mario licensed switch 2 ones) either don't claim write speed, or claim very slow write speed. pretty sure UHS-II it was called, was faster.

you also need the Sandisk microSD express reader to get the full write speed. if you plan to use it for other purposes such as with desktop pc.

If you need sustained write speed in any meaningful way for a large amount of data, get a proper portable SSD.

For a game console, write speed is only relevant for installation of new games (constrained by download speed), or moving from internal storage to the external storage (or vice versa, and either way pretty rare). Read speed is primarily what matters when it comes to loading game data, and that's where Micro SD Express has a massive advantage.

UHS-II Micro SD cards themselves are not cheap by any means.

      • The Atrix Micro SD Express is $260 for 1TB, or $0.26 per GB.
      • This Lexar Play Pro Micro SD Express here is $400 for 1TB, or $0.40 per GB.
      • The SanDisk 64GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-II is $59 for just 64 GB, or $0.92 per GB.
      • The SanDisk 64GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-II is $59 for just 64 GB, or $0.92 per GB.

sorry not an expert I don't really get the UHS-II standard. just remember from what I saw in the video.

UHS-II was 98% the speed of "new" microSD express btw in the copying test. the difference was express manages to copy the first 2% at faster speed, but then instantly drops to a constant lower speed for the rest of the copy. UHS-II basically just does the lower speed for the entire copy. so almost zero difference in time. 💁‍♀️

this was with the fastest sandisk microSD and the sandisk high speed reader. so a lot of marketing fluff I guess, I think the sandisk express microSD was similar $ per GB as the UHS-II.

You don't have to be an expert to realise that sustained write speed is largely irrelevant for most consumers, where loading data from the card is >95% of what you'd use these for.

Would you complain that you aren't paying enough extra money to your ISP for faster upload speed that you don't even use?

I think the sandisk express microSD was similar $ per GB as the UHS-II.

Even the Sandisk MicroSD Express cards you're referring to goes for $130 for 256GB and $200 for 512GB. Averaging half the price per GB compared to UHS-II.

          • @pj1351: yes I understand what you are saying. but that's not an excuse for this Lexar "Express" branded card, to not do express write speeds. if you are buying a Express microSD consumers expect to benefit from all the Express speeds.

again don't even use microSD cards so not really in my interest. but just from a shoppers perspective, it seemed dodgy.

also this standard seems focused together with Switch 2 marketing. I don't think you can plug a SSD into a Switch 2 and load games on it. just from what I know they are pretty strict with what you can and cannot do with Switch products.

The MicroSD Express standard only requires a minimum sustained write speed of 150MB/s in its lowest class.

In the video you're referring to (if it's the same one I'm thinking of), he doesn't actually test ANY of the "slower" examples. He was only quoting the U3/V30 sustained write speeds of the other cards, which is applicable to their MicroSD backwards compatibility when they are used in standard MicroSD devices (not in MicroSD Express devices).

also this standard seems focused together with Switch 2 marketing. I don't think you can plug a SSD into a Switch 2 and load games on it. just from what I know they are pretty strict with what you can and cannot do with Switch products.

You seem to be misunderstanding something.

              • If you need sustained write speeds for your PC (e.g. for frequently working on or transferring huge video files), get a proper portable SSD, because the MicroSD Express is not meant for that purpose.
              • If you're getting this for the Switch 2, again, sustained write speed is largely irrelevant.
              • @pj1351:

In the video you're referring to

old guy with glasses. yeah he didn't test the other brands which is why they aren't proven yet. but he said he looked for specs and couldn't find any. sus.

It's definitely not a long term down the line kind of review, but I've been rocking their 512gb card in mine for a couple weeks and I've zero complaints. If it blows up, I'll come back to let you know!

How did you manage to buy this 2 years ago for $220 when it was only released April this year?

      • +4

Um excuse me, he uses his BS Delorean.

      • Must've been the non-"play pro" version.

        • One of these?

The prices are very different because they're very different internally, even if they look identical on top.

          • One is just a standard MicroSD card that caps out at a max read speed of 150MB/s.
          • The other is basically a PCIe 3.0 SSD in a MicroSD form factor, capping out at a theoretical max read speed of 900MB/s.
  • +1

I hope phones start using these.
Even at this inflated price it's still cheaper than the storage upgrade extortion phone manufacturers offer.

  • +1

    It's cheaper to buy 4 x 256GB cards

$79 x 4 = $316, and do you need that? Is this for digital collectors that want to have everything downloaded at the same time?

    OzBargain Oil Barons maybe, idk.

    • Given that Lexar is currently the only company known to manufacture 1TB Micro SD Express cards at all, the Atrix 1TB is just an OEM version of the same product.

The version Lexar is selling themselves is probably selected from the best of the batches, so possibly better sustained read/write performance.

But 50% better performance to match the price difference? Nah, just get the Atrix.

  • +3

If you don't need it right now don't get it….i can see microSD of this size dropping in price big time in the near future.

    Ride out the wave

    • If you don't need it right now don't get it….

fyi no guarantee the Lexar and even Mario licensed "new" express cards can even do Express speeds for write. they only claim to do the Express read speeds.

Sandisk microSD Express card was the only one which claims and can do the Express speed write.

  • a quick google shows that techbuy has this slightly cheaper: https://www.techbuy.com.au/p/551051/MEMORY_CARDS_(SD)_MICRO_SECURE_DIGITAL/Lexar/LMSXPS0001T-BNNNG.asp

With "camerahouse" never heard of them taking orders at $350 (not in stock) https://www.camerahouse.com.au/lexar-1tb-play-pro-microsdxc-…

    • Maybe a new price change as I didn't see this when I googled last night.

Techbuy is cheaper though at $381.50 + $9.90 shipping.
