  • The TomTom one V3 is a real piece of shit.. dont waste your time.

Spend a extra $50 or so and get the New TomTom ONE.

  • Thanks for the info on the various models - is this one up-datable? - I would guess not.

Their site says 512K / 1Mb with TOM0012 as the model number but searching on TOM0012 gives only 512K

  • Really Benbo? How so? No spoken street names? Thanks

  • Hi,
Can anyone recommend Tomtom ONe v4 versus the Garmin Nuvi 260?

    Thanks!

  • +1

I have used both the Tomtom one v3 and v4 and I have to say the v4 is a vast improvement over the v3, even the stand has been improved to be more stable. However if I was strapped for cash I would definitely go the v3 above any other GPS in this price range.

As for the Tomtom One v4 the Garmin Nuvi 260, you might want to read this review: http://www.cnet.com.au/cartech/gps/0,2000438599,339288926,00…. They recommend the Tomtom One v4 over the Garmin Nuvi 260 in the same price range.

  • I did read that, and wasn't fully convinced yet…… :-)

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 260. If you want speed camera alert you must download them. I tried to do this for about 3.5hrs over two days and still couldnt download them. I returned it and got a MIO Moov with 4.3' for $20 more with speed camera alerts built in.

    • Do you have to pay for the speed camera alerts or do they come free? Also, is it possible to see the speed camera places before you go on the journey, or can you turn the main voice off, and just have someone chime in and tell you when you are approaching a speed camera? For example, if I were say going somewhere familiar like my mums house and wanted to listen to music, I wouldn;t want the GPS telling me about the streets, but I might want to hear about a speed camera on the way, or know about it before hand…

  • @Benbo, Would be great if you justified why its shit….

IMO, TomTom One V3 is pretty good. I don't know why people say its bad.

Maybe its because they still use the old Navcore….
I use a updated Navcore, which is Version 8 on my Tomtom One V3, basically its the same one that all the new Tomtoms use.

And it locks on REALLY REALLY REALLY fast…. like within 15seconds.

As for everything else, its pretty much the same as any new TTOne devices out there, since its using the same Navcore software as those.

TTOne device doesn't have spoken street names, even in the newest NavCore versions. (Unless i haven't found the button for it yet….) However i don't see the point of it, i'd find it extremely annoying.

By upgrading it from Navcore 7 to 8 (newest), it allows you to use the QuickGPSFix updates from TT Home, which help the device lock on a lot quicker. That is probably why i always get lockon within 15sec.

    • I have both - with Navcore 8, the main functions are there, but the TomTom One 2008 version does have spoken street names.

      • ahhh, i just remembered. haha
Spoken Street Names isn't part of the Navcore itself. (Well sort of it is).

Basically Navcore8 the software on there has functionality for it. But your "map pack" must support spoken street names.

  • But does anyone know if you can turn ALL the speaking off and then it just tell you when you are approaching a speed camera, or look at the route before you go and see if there are any speed cameras? Not the fixed cameras.. I know where they are, bu thte mobile ones……

    Thanks!

    • undies - the mobile one unfortunately are not able to be tracked because they are mobile and the police cars aren't trackable by satellite

  • aaah. So you know how they show you on the news the day before where they are going to be? There's nothing you can download each morning or soemthign like that that shows where they are each day? Sounds like something that SHOULD be able to be done! That's the only reason I wanted the GPS! hahahaha
