My issue is now I'm so reliant on the ovo free 3 for my charging and ac and heat pump etc, it's hard to switch electricity. Wish more providers would have this option.

    • +1

Is 3 hours enough to charge your car, heat the house and hot water?

    • Just had a heat pump installed, and I’m looking to set it to a timer to run in these hours as well (also got solar). Just worried whether we’ll run out of hot water at night when we usually shower (2 people for a 280l). Do you have any tips?

    • Same here, easily using 25-35kWh daily between 11-2
If you like with a partner I would recommend switching between you using Econnex, atleast you get free gift cards

      • What sort of email or confirmation do you get for the giftcards from econnex? They've shifted over my internet and gas around 2 weeks ago.

        • +2

A gift card after 90-120 days that comes from Karta Rewards

Email them on 90 days and they will confirm that you will receive the gift card in the next 30 days after that

          • +1

            @Brick50: Can confirm exactly this.

          • @Brick50: Thanks!, I'm locked in my current deal for 45 days for the giftcard, so I guess I will Switch after, maybe around the turn of the 60 timing it. And then email them around the 90 days.

Do I email Karta rewards or just respond econnex emails.

            • @lebeegees: I just switched again yesterday back to my partners name again, I stay until I can see 45 days of actual usage to prove I was with them for 45 days and then change straight away as long as there is an active econnex deal. You contact econnex it has nothing to do with Karta

Used 36kWh today in the Ovo free period from 11am-2pm, using home assistant to max out my 63A mains connection charging ev, heating, doing washing etc.

    • +1

Your wish is granted, Powershop have a similar plan.

      • For my address the free period is only 12-2pm so only 2 hours, plus they force a offpeak/peak cost of 42.97c and 19.1c offpeak

OVO is 28.6c single rate and then free 11am-2pm for me which is a much better offer, I wouldn't really use much energy outside the free period or the peak period (bugger all use overnight, in the morning before 11 or between 2pm and 3pm)

    • 100% same thing here.
I’m very much in favour of the OVO 3hr free plan… charging the EV during these 3 hrs is my daily alarm routine!

      • I'm worried it won't be here to stay, with mass adoption of home batteries I assume the OVO EV plan will become very popular

Charge the battery flat out from 11-2, solar for the rest and worst case overnight at 8c during winter. I think this will soak up a lot of the excess solar during the middle of the day that we are currently using

  • +2

These guys are clowns hide their solar rates overcharge as well

  • +1

This company is shifty as fk, they will charge u double instead don't be fooled LOL

  • Do they carry forward the electricity credit? It only mention about gas

    • +3

Been with PowerShop for electricity 7 times over years. Credits are carried forward.

Only use small amount of electricity so $150 Bill Credit paid for 3 months use this year.
Automatically refunded $56 unused portion of Govt Refund.

Had Switched with Econnex Deal for additional $200 MasterCard.

      So 3 month electricity + $256 PROFIT💰💰

    • Yep, been getting referral, government rebate and using to purchase power packs which all carry over.

  • Electricity prices seem ok for me, enough to justify churning for the credit.
But gas prices are $500 more expensive annually for me and not worth the switch

  • insane rates

  • +1

Just left them. Their rates are insane and been jacked.

    • +10

Insane rates for you. Remember that rates vary significantly between area, state, and wholesale area. For some of us, Powershop is reasonably competitive at times.

  • +1

Jack is smiling in the background

  • +10

Holy shit how are they even permitted to charge these kinda rates? that's criminal and pure exploitation. Really hope these guys go outta business.

Super Off Peak tariff (incl GST) - 0c/kWh

Daily supply charge (incl GST) - 122.84c/day

Peak tariff (incl GST) - 46.2c/kWh

Off Peak tariff (incl GST) - 23.76c/kWh

    Solar feed-in tariff - 0.5c/kWh

    • Are these bad in your area? Normal in mine….

  • +3

If ur in VIC. Before you even consider this deal, make sure you check on the Vic govt compare website to see if they are recommended for you or not.

Have other state govts got similar price comparison sites for utilities yet?!

Kind of a game changer really, so easy to churn elec/gas these days here in Vic.

    • +4

Or sign up, use the free money, then switch again…

  • +2

Abandoned them earlier this year, I found their service and competitiveness declined massively over the previous two years.
I had repeated issues, the biggest being they "forgot" to bill me right after a gas price hike, at the start of winter. Then they remembered right before the next quarter bill was due. I received two insane bills, which gave me the shits because I would have massively changed our gas usage habits if I had received the first one. I was on direct debit too.

The other issues were a sudden influx of "we couldn't access your meter", estimated bills, requests for me to input my gas meter readings, and then they couldn't get their shit together when I left them and I received a number of conflicting bills. They just turned to shit.

  • +6

I haven't followed the price jacking but this is a pretty well known "green" social enterprise that was bought out by Shell in 2021. On the basis of misleading their customers and greenwashing, I wouldn't be supporting this kind of company.

  • +1

Been with them before. No mention of being a previous customer prevents you from getting credit ?

    • +1

I wonder about that too. Many say it's ok for returning customers but how about the requirement below?
"the market contract must be your first electricity market contract with Powershop for the premises you switch"

      • +2

I've ping ponged between agl and ps about 4 times each. New credit every time. They will eventually block your address from signing up to any of the sign up credit attracting plans.

      • To me this means that if you ever had an electricity contract with Powershop in the past (not just in the last 12 months), you are not eligible for that bonus — even if it was 2+ years ago.

This is stricter than the usual "not in last 12 months" clause.

        • I agree with you but they mustn’t check going by what txb said.

  • -1

This has been around for months. Qld is $100, not $200

    • Nah mate, $200 for Qld

      • Switch today & get a $100 electricity credit

on both plans. so nah mate, $100 for Qld (gold coast)

        • +1

          $100 for you, $200 for me 🤝

        • I got $200 in QLD.

  • +2

Recently left after I discovered my rates were jacked up 25% and I was never notified.

  • +2

There's a small hack to get a bit more in credit (could be targeted)

After I switched over and could see the $200cr I also noticed a winter power pack option available to purchase, which is a prepay of electricity. This one was $10 for $30 worth of power. You can use your sign up credit to pay for this and profit the $20 difference. Mind you my tariffs are obscenely expensive but it dosent matter if you churn onto the next when it runs out.

    • Nice! Thanks for the tip.

    • I just churned one day ago, when do you see the $200cr in your account? straight away?

      • When you can log into your account and view your dashboard

    • Ah that explains why after I purchased my $200 credit became $190

  • -1

Just did a https://compare.energy.vic.gov.au/offers comparison, and Powershop estimated yearly fee will be $2050, compared to $1350 the cheapest for gas. Insane.

    • Sign up get the credit, once credit used up switch to the cheaper provider for long-term.

Or like most Oz bargainers switch to another provider with free credits. Rinse and repeat.

Just make sure you got a good credit rating.

      • May not be worth it for even one billing cycle in winter if the difference is that large for them - that could be a guaranteed 600 vs. 400 bill to get 100 credit.

        • +1

I'm in NSW $200 for a few mins work is a no brainer for me.

Next month I'll just switch to another provider with better rates.

          • @[Deactivated]: I was referring to gas like the OP, where the credit is only $100 and most people don't have smart meters (not aware of any smart gas meter rollouts in Australia?). That also means you're locked in with power shop for at least one billing cycle for me that's 60 days, hence my $600 vs. $400 bill hypothetical scenario.

You're right, with more credit and smart metering allowing on demand onboarding/offloading then it's easy to justify for electricity. Do you have monthly gas bills?

            • +1

@Alzori: My gas bills usually around $100 a quarter. So the $100 credit should cover me for most of the quarter even with the higher rates than my old provider.

Gas is relatively cheap compared to electricity. We use gas for cooking, instant hot water only.

  • +1

Late to this party - but looking at their rates, it would be a lot cheaper than what I am on…. IF….I could minimise power use between 4pm and 8pm.

The rates for all other times are about 20% less than my current flat-rate plan. If I reprogrammed my pool filter pump and HWS to run between 12 & 2pm and made sure we ran the dishwasher and dryer at that time, it could make a difference. I’ll have to set up Home Assistant to capture my hourly use.

The long-term killer is the network charge. As batteries become more common, retailers and wholesalers will make more from renting the wires and poles to you than selling you electrons.

  • Hi. The sign up credit for electricity combined with the Cashrewards offer does seem attractive. I am looking at signing up for their 'Switch Saver' plan and then moving shortly after to the EV Day Saver plan for the free 3 hours and much lower daily supply charge. Wanted to check how long would I need to wait on the Switch Saver plan to see the credit and when I move to the other plan will the credit automatically transfer over. Also assuming the Cashrewards cashback will not be impacted by changing plans but not fully sure and hence asking if anyone could help confirm if that is the case.

    • Using a referral for $75 vs $150 with Cashrewards can be a better deal for some. Because you can switch out straight away as the credit is paid upfront… But you can only use the referral once or twice a year. Cashrewards also has a 6-months CD.

    • I've just signed up for Switch Saver to get $200 credits and is planning to switch the EV Day Saver as well. Did it work for you?

  • I just switched on Cashrewards for $150, an added bonus if they also give me the $200 credit. Their service has gone down for sure, I loved them before covid, when the world was ok. Last switching out of powershop, they messed up the final reading, and I was under charged, then the new company slapped a massive bill on me then ghosted all my emails 😂. So I ignore all theirs now too, glad to be out. Always take a photo of your meter and double check the last reading.

    • Powershop used to be a great small energy retailer. Now bought up by a larger one😢

  • Its cheeky that the offer only seems to apply to their most expensive plan. Some are 200 credit, others 100 and their cheapest plan says nothing about credit

    • +2

You can switch the plan pretty much straightaway(I did). Once you can see the credit in the app, you can safely switch without losing the credit.

      • Is there a way to switch online/app or do I need to call them up? No way they take my credit away right?

        • +1

Have to call. Credit doesn’t go away but you can always get them to confirm before you switch.

  • +1

Can we claim both the signup credit from Powershop and cashback from Cashrewards?

  • Yes, can confirm referral bonus works even after having already signed up.

  • is anyone else having issues with their customer service?
The online chat is never open so they tell you to email. Been waiting on a response now for a good week. I just want to switch plans to the cheaper option and also give them a referral code. Not great…

    • Have you tried calling them?

    • Called them to switch to cheaper plan, I didn't even know they had a chat. The wait time was LONG, but they switched my plan no issues.

  • Did someone try to use Cashrewards $150 cashback and apply a referral bonus after signing up?

  • Signed up to Switch Saver, got the $275 credit showing in my account.

Tried to move over to EV Day Saver after, but after sitting on hold for almost 50 minutes, sales told me I can’t switch unless I have an EV registered in my name.

I never had that restriction with OVO or Globird on their free usage window plans.

So for anyone thinking of doing the same: no EV = no EV plan with Powershop.

I’ll just burn through the sign-up/referral credit on Switch Saver, then likely churn back to OVO since I can’t leverage the free hours here.

    • +1

      Interesting.
Full disclosure I do have an EV.
When I switched, they just asked which EV (brand, model) and how many kms I'll do in a year. Didn't have to provide any proof of ownership or anything else. Not even rego if I recall correctly.

      • I was upfront about not having one, so they flat out blocked me. It is in the EV plan T&Cs that you need to have an EV registered on your name.

  • I'm only able to get the electricity plans and it only offers me $100 credit. has the offer changed to only $100 credit?

Edit: oh maybe because it's a new connection not a switch.
