MEGA.co.nz - Free ($0.00) 50GB Cloud Storage - The New Megaupload

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Megaupload is back, with no file size limits :)

Not sure if you guys in Aussie have heard much about this, but the creators and developers of the original MU are all NZ citizens, and have been fighting extradition to the USA for a year now, so it seems appropriate that they have chosen a domain such as they have; mega.co.nz, and a release time exactly one year after the raid on their Auckland mansion began.

The free offering is 50GB with paid options available, 500GB is $9.99 and it scales up from there.

One thing about Mega is that no content is hosted in the USA, and it is all encrypted with a 2048bit encryption key that only the uploader has access to, which can then be distributed as they wish.

I have taken some screenshots and written a small article about the site if anyone wants to see what it looks like inside: http://socyberty.com/economics/mega-co-nz-the-new-megaupload…

Enjoy :)

And apps (Windows/IOS/Android) are on the way, not sure when they are going to be available though.

I don't know why you are getting negged for this.
The rules are quite clear. It is a free service on the website and has always been free. There is no discount on the paid service hence there is no bargain.

Technically that's correct, but since (a) it's a brand new service, and (b) most of its competitors require payment for the same amount of storage, I'd say it's worth making an exception. Although obviously, that's up to the mods.

        • +1

so, u kick the ball to the mods? it is a little political ;p

but i agree with both you and tipple a.

  • +3

Good for the, I'm still worried about joining since the legal drama is far from over

    • +4

      F&^% DA PO-LICE!!

    • ive been following the megaupload case quite closely this last year and so far the only ones to have broken any laws are both the american and new zealand governments. theres heaps of news on http://torrentfreak.com/tag/megaupload/ about it all (with loads of external links for reference)

      • Do you have any news sources from a non-biased perspective?

        • +2

yes, i posted the link. ;)

all stories have usually multiple external references (ie the actual news stories TF get there info from) and while some stories are imo slightly biased they are in contrast to regular commercial "news" coverage very unbiased.

maybe your looking for the today tonight/aca style of "unbiased" news

  • "They are all nz citizens" you mean to say Kim Dotcom is..

    • Even that is not correct. Kim Dotcom is a New Zealand resident he has not got citizenship yet.

  • +2

Risky. If he goes, so will your data…

    • +1

This applies to all cloud storage.

      • This applies to all storage.

just thought i would fix that up for you ;)

        • +1

What? If Western Digital goes, my hard drive still works.

        • +2

i more meant that no single type of storage is always reliable

hard drives fail as cloud storage companies can fail…

        • Because cloud storage really uses hard drives.

        • What?

        • He wrote:

          Not just cloud storage.

  • Scratch that, working now

  • I am gonna give it a go.

nothing to lose… well only Data!!! :p

  • They chose me.ga but had that option removed from them by Gabon: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/11/kim-dotcom-has-ne…

I'll stick with the fight club option for now. At least we have a new FS site as a backup.

  • My god! Zero dollars AND Zero cents? from your title I finally understand the dollar numeration of what free means

    • It was complaining about not having a numeric value in there ;)

  • +1

    site is still unaccessible…..

  • Not really usable yet, remains to be seen if load will balance out.

      Deal
Noun: An agreement entered into by two or more parties for their mutual benefit, esp. in a business or political context.

Sounds like a deal to me.

  • Looks good, signed up, however I didn't like how it needed to load things in flash nor did I like it's attempt to move people to chrome on the basis that it had HTML5 support (as does every other browser).

  • +1

    Not anonymous, what's the point?

    • +1

      lol.

mega (or megaupload for that matter) is a site designed for people to upload, store and if they choose to share there own digital property. it is not for people to break the law with. why should it even need to be anonymous? if you choose to break the law it is (and should be) on your shoulders. you shouldnt expect someone else to take the fall for your actions…

however…. if you choose to use mega to break the law (upload illegal material)… they have given you (and themselves) some level of protection by encrypting your data on your computer with a key only you have. mega themselves (just like, say, the post man) has no idea whats inside your encrypted package and has no way of finding out without you giving them your key….

  • very slick. very quick. impressed. Don't know why you would complain about a free service.

  • Takes me a while to load…

  • What does this mean? "To strengthen the key, we have collected entropy from your mouse movements and keystroke timings."

    • +3

To help "randomize" a key generation it will likely take mouse input data (positions X & Y), and key timings (time between key strokes) to help calculate a more random (and secure) value; this is for your benefit :)

    • +4

It means that the Encryption Key is generated using the movement of your mouse and presses of your keyboard. This ensures that it is 100% randomly generated/different to everyone else's as there is no way that anyone can move their mouse and press theirs keys exactly as someone else.

      Source: Me

(Thought I was on Yahoo Answers for a second).

    • That's not a deliberately misleading invocation of the second law of thermodynamics: instead it indicates the new service will enhance the randomness of the key generation process by taking variables from each user's particular mouse and keyboard habits.

It's not a bargain, as per the Ozbargain Deal Posting Guidelines.

It's a website that is always free. Like colashock said, it is the same as if someone posted Hotmail or Firefox as a "bargain".

If it was on special for a limited time, such as offering discounted storage for the first month, then it would be a deal, however this doesn't seem to be the case.

It really is a forum post, although we always get into the whole "if it was a forum post I never would have seen it" thing when this is brought up, which is true, but it doesn't reallyy make it a bargain still.

  • FYI, while there is strong encryption used on this site, and the encoding/decoding is performed on your PC, all the keys are stored on the server.

This is the only practical way of offering the service legally, but understand that the fact the files are encrypted is really only for legal protection, not to keep the content of the files secure in any way.

Of course if you want to backup sensitive data to the cloud, just use something like GPG to encrypt it first, and keep the keys off the cloud.

    • +1

i think the key remains on the uploaders box. mega does not have access to it.

      • i think the key remains on the uploaders box. mega does not have access to it.

thats exactly how i understand it.

its done so mega can not be held responsible for how its users use the service (same as aus post cant be held responsible for drug smuggling if someone else tries to post drugs through the mail system). but in doing so also gives the users protection from copyright trolls etc.

    great re-start for mega

  • I registered about 4 hours ago and still havent received the email

Yeah, me too. What can we do? I can't see anywhere we can click something like "Resend Welcome eMail".

At the risk of getting 'negged' to the heck (a la JV). I would like to say on behalf of colashock, Adamiam, and myself - "we told you so". This belonged in the Forums.

EDIT: Ha ha, I got negged already.

    • Here's a leg up ;)

      • -1

        Here's a leg up ;)

        Thanks strangeloops66 - right back at ya, as I see someone negged you as well :}

    • -2

I'm negging you for saying heck. If you're going to say something, say it properly and don't hide behind a euphemism.

      • I'm negging you for saying heck. If you're going to say something, say it properly and don't hide behind a euphemism.

I think of it more as an Americanism.

However, you are correct - I should have written "At the risk of getting 'negged' to hell."

  • Certainly puts NZ on the map!

  • I can't access the website "The connection has timed out"

    • after a retry it worked for me just now.
this will be getting OzBargained on a world wide scale today seeing its the first day and millions of people will be rushing to sign up.

      • this will be getting OzBargained on a world wide scale today seeing its the first day and millions of people will be rushing to sign up.

Yup, heading for a world record I believe.

    • I can't access the website "The connection has timed out"

Try trying the https://mega.co.nz URL instead of the http:// one.

  • It has been patchy all day, but when it has worked, it is super smooth!

  • why has the post been moved to the forums :/

    Kim Dotcom is awesome :D

    • why has the post been moved to the forums

Because it was not a 'bargain' and not a 'freeby' as such - as it has always been free (much like HoTMaiL or Gmail).

  • The live stream was good just then.

    • its no surprise that when a few million people all try and connect to the same web site at the same time the site goes down. generally its called a DDOS attack and there really is very little you can do about it. i think i read he had a 10gb link and that was flooded. thats a damn lot of traffic.

The new "legal" cloud storage website went live in New Zealand

@$#$%$#^%&$%^$^%&^&%^%* commercial news…. how i hate thee with such passion.. trying to infer that his old service was illegal to brainwash your sheep who ingest your swill. rupert murdoch i hope you and your demon spawn die the horrid death you deserve

  • Thanks, I actually didn't know it was 50gb for free. I'll transfer from dropbox to mega now. There was a news article about the american gov being able to access all the dropbox files from every user. Just because they can.

  • -1

You should try megaspotted.com. There you can share uploads on mega.co.nz and download files other people shared

  • …just to let you guys know apparently they've axed this and it's really only 15GB, to get to 50GB you need to do some achievements…..
