I think ipad os 26 will turn ipad into mac. It might be useful
they've been saying that for ages
…have you actually seen the new OS?
@poppingtags: lots of promises and speculation, little to show for. call me when something actually gets delivered
With the upcoming iPadOS 26, the Pro models in particular become absolute powerhouses for creatives. I have a few friends considering moving to an iPad Pro as their primary computing device, purely due to what the OS update unlocks.
Craig Federighi did explicitly say that he won’t make iPadOS to be running like MacOS because MacOS isn’t optimised for touch screens.
Even if they can they won’t do it because they wouldn’t want to cannibalise the Mac line.I feel like them coming together is the direction of travel, even if they won’t say as much today. Used to also be the case that iPad apps weren’t optimised for mouse or trackpad, where now use of a Smart Cover with KB+Trackpads very common and heavily supported by Apple. iPads come a long way since Steve Jobs unveiled it and was heavily focused on reading books and browsing the web.
I do think that’s still some time into the future but. MacOS today isn’t optimised for tablet, sure, but the OS evolve and MacOS and iPadOS certainly seem to be streamlining on certain design aspects gradually.
FWIW, I really love the VNC app Screens (Jump Desktops a cheaper alternative). Remoting into my Mac using Screens and operating my Mac via the iPad with a Smart Cover is a much better experience than one may initially expect.
I watched that interview as well - but there are plenty of people who would move to an iPad, if it was a bit more capable - which it now is, with the new OS update making it so much closer to a Mac, and for many people - especially certain visual artists who use the iPad for drawing, that’s close enough for them to jump ship.
Yeah right. Real "powerhouse" that has the same capabilities as an iPhone.
I’ve used iOS 26 on my iPad, it’s good but not even close to replacing my MacBook.
Wow really seem to have struck a nerve here with the negs. Do you work as a creative, where you use the iPad as a drawing device? I did say that it’s specifically for creatives that it makes sense, obviously a $2600 iPad isn’t for everyone. If you’re a visual artist who uses the iPad for drawing, and the only thing you use your computer for is browsing the internet and sending emails, then the new iPad on iOS26 can absolutely replace a laptop for these artists, especially if connected to an external monitor.
I think a lot of people also don’t realise the M chips in the iPad Pro models are the same chip that’s in the MacBook Pro - and while the MacBooks are more capable devices, not everyone needs what the MacBook offers over an iPad, especially now that the difference in UI and file handling is so much closer.
@poppingtags: You haven’t struck a nerve you are just applying generalised statements about ‘creatives’ when you are really talking about very specific use cases. There may be some fringe use cases where an iPad would be more suitable due to portability and the touch screen but the operating systems are not even close to being the same.
Saying the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro’s share the same chip is another broad and for the most part incorrect statement. Only the base model MacBook Pro’s have standard M4’s the rest have M4 Pro and M4 Max chips which you can’t get on an iPad, very important for video editing ‘creatives’.
Is how the other half live?
RBA didn’t drop today so won’t be buying this anymore
Thanks MB 😭
$2600 for a tablet, dayum, what would people use this for? Video editing?
Youtube and Netflix (or braggin rights)
Tiktok
I bought an iPad Pro years ago for photo editing and it changed my entire workflow. Being able to use the apple pencil in Lighroom and use the precision of touch for colour correcting was incredible.
Genuinely curious if the older versions or lower specs of the iPads would be able to use Lightroom just as well today. Photo editing doesn't require as much processing power as video or 3d modelling right?
Considering getting the missus one to help with her photo editing but not willing to spend $2.6k on it…
Mine is still working great and I bought it at least 4 years ago. If your wife does a lot of photo editing it will be so worth it :)
to rapidly scroll for dank ozbargain comments..
3D modelling.
Fantastic price. I paid more for my 12.9 M2 iPad Pro 6th gen with 512gb in 2022. Mine only had 8gb of ram too. But was cellular version.
Why on some amazon items, "you must provide code to the delivery person blah blah"
Since when?When it’s a bit expensive electronics
Nano display is actually NOT recommended accordingly to YouTube tech reviewers
why tho
Easy to get scratched and washed out colours/not as deep blacks compared to regular display.
I paid only $1199 for 12.9-inch iPad Pro with Apple M1 chip (Wi-Fi + Cellular, 2TB) on Amazon in the midnight. Less than half price and supports esim…
good for you!
the oled screen on these things are amazing (i would recommend not getting the Nano Texture Glass unless you have a purpose for it)
Thanks got 12 of these
At this price point, it’s better to get a macbook instead?
No terminal access
Only one external display
No multi user accounts
No clamshell mode
Cant run script
Cant run developer tool
Games dont run full screen on external displaywaiting for the tandem oled model next year :)
This or XiaoXin Pad Pro 2025?
I will vote for XiaoXin pad pro 2025. Got one and it is amazing!
Use devcheck app, your memory and storage capacity may be faked
use case: watch youtube videos
If it wasn’t for the M5 iPad Pro is around the corner, I would seriously consider getting one from this deal.
People say the same thing about every Apple device every year and then complain when it’s released because the device has only marginally changed. Food for thought
I know a couple who absolutely have no tech knowledge, but only purchase high end tech devices for them & their kids (both under 6 yo at the moment) because they can afford it.
I remember they bought 2 top spec iPad pros 2-3 years ago for each kid, and then another new iPad mini for like $1.5k last year.
Every 2 year or so they upgrade their iPhones. Bought an Macbook but didn't know how to use it.
You'd think they are fools but really can't tell them how to spend their money.that's an insane price given RRP and current price at all shops.
who on earth is buying iPads at this spec
