Medibank and Other Private Health Retention Offers - Do We Know How These Work?

I'm with Medibank for Hospital + Extras and every now and then I call up retention and ask for a discount. This time I got 12% off for 12 months, just because I said there's a better offer put forward to me by AIA (completely made this up). I recall a few years ago I got 25% off for 9 months odd. Does anyone know what their formula is and how far we can push these?

    Better of going somewhere else, their sign up offer will be even better than the tiny retention discount

      Not easy to do with gold-tier coverage unfortunately, I've only ever seen one sign-on bonus that didn't explicitly exclude it.

    The government forbids a discount of more than 12% to the annual hospital plan.
