Looking for a refurb screen for my dad's home office - found this. Seems like a great price for what it is. No, don't use it for gaming. Screen is IPS.

I’ve one - excellent since new, but who’d buy a 10 year monitor?

    • +2

My dad's PC is 10 years old and he uses it for basic home office and some audio/video producing.
Do you have a suggestion for a 34in monitor that would be better (and in what way) for a competitive price?

      • +1

        Golden rules:
        1. Buy best monitor you can afford
        2. Calibrate it

        • Are they easy to calibrate?

          • +1

@Pusdi: Yes and no. I’ve x-rite cheapest running their consumer-level software and it works/ed but since buyout greedy Calibrite ruined the experience. There’s no shortage of reviews for devices, so, you’ll need to evaluate. It pays for itself when you see the difference.

      • I would suggest a 16:9 display instead of this ratio tbh
Try to go for QHD - you'll be sorry, or rather your dad will, with a 4k
        Asus PA328CGV is a 32"

        • Is QHD better than 4K for most viewing? I thought 4K with 150% scale would be better then 2K but happy to be corrected
I know QHD ususally has a higher hz but youtube seems to only be 60hz so didn't think it would change much for office use and youtube?

Just bought a 4K 27" and looking for another USB C monitor so wanting to know before I buy another aha

          • @Brick50: I have personally not had the best experience with scaling, hence why I go for QHD monitors but I have limited experience.

      • but who’d buy a 10 year monitor?

My dad's PC is 10 years old and he uses it for basic home office and some audio/video producing.

Then this is the monitor he needs. Will bring back good 10 year old memories for him.

True story - I have two Ultrasharp 27" U2711 for CAD etc - 15 years old and still stronk!
The U2711 were about $995 ea retail from memory.
      I did buy an el-cheapo LG 4K 32" @ Aldi a few years ago for a little over $200 - It blew my Dell 27" away. /cries

Released in 2015, 10 years old

Calling it a '10 year old' monitor only matters if you treat time as something that moves forward and makes things worse by default. But time isn’t an absolute force, rather, it’s a way we measure change. The monitor isn’t deteriorating because the calendar changed; if it still functions well and serves its purpose, then the idea of it being 'old' is more about our perception than any real limitation.

Our experience of time, with a past, present, and future, is something the human brain constructs to make sense of change and causality. But in reality, physics doesn’t insist on a flowing 'now.' Events just exist, and we interpret them through memory and expectation. So saying something is 'old' is more a reflection of how we think about time than anything objectively true about the thing itself.

As Einstein once wrote, "The distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion."
It's a reminder that what we call “old” might just be a trick of perspective, not a flaw in the thing itself, but in the lens through which we view it.

        It's old.

Potentially been used for 10 years, components break, why waste your money on this shit.

        • +3

Monitors do tent to get noticeably dimmer, less colour accurate either turning greenish or purplish and lose sharpness…
          I didn't buy it.

          • -3

@kaybrr: Plus,… this monitor is pre-LED backlight era. Fluorescent backlight definitely ages with time, hence need regular calibration.

        • I have a Dell monitor from 2007. Still going strong. Actually wouldn't mind it failing so I have a good reason to replace it.

          • +1

@madpig83: When you do buy a new monitor, plug them both in and you might realise how the 2007 one has deteriorated but its hard top notice day to day

I didn't realise how much of a deal-breaker "no stand" was for me until I tried getting a stand but they were all shite and I didn't want a monitor arm

    • I have 2 Dell Ultrasharp stands in the garage. They are both too low to use with my laptop

    • Damn thats slow in today standards

    Old AF.
See plenty of these older monitors on the nature strip working perfectly

  • +1

I would recommend something like this for older folks:
https://amzn.asia/d/2aL2YA0 LG 27” IPS Full HD 100Hz for only $129

  • +3

After you have account for Startrack delivery the min cost for this monitor is $221. Add in a basic stand for $49 and that total comes to $270. That's a bit too much for 10 year old hardware, unless you happen to live close enough to Pickup and have a spare monitor arm already

A brand new MSI MP34 monitor only costs $299 (with free shipping) on Amazon or $293 Pickup from Umart. That comes with full warranty and a stand. It is a VA monitor but you get 100hz refresh rate 🎮

It's really not that bad at this pricing, even without a stand.

2k ultrawide is good enough for productivity, not mentioning this model comes with both internal MST daisy chaining and built-in KVM. You don't see these very often (especially internal MST hub) on later models.

Though shipping is pretty high considering it's a bulky item. Won't be a problem if you can pick it up.

  • +1

I got the U3419w model late last year for about $200. It does a good for your average office workflow.

  • +2

bought one from them last year for $200, performed well until it died after a few month sitting on my desk prob power supply fault, didn't manage to get many hours out of it, prob lasted <100hrs hence quite expensive at $2/h. not sure whether it's worth the hassle fixing it.

  • I would prefer a VA panel with 75-100hz over an IPS with 60hz.

Even our office 34" QHD monitors are VA 100hz.

There is no reason to be stuck at 60hz these days.

  • I bought this one and happy with it:

    4K, ips, Usb c, 31.5 inch ,60hz

  • This better than 2 x U2711's? And would a U2711 stand fit?
