Tablet for Kids (Minecraft Gaming)

Hi All,

Whats a good tablet for kids to play Minecraft on? I was looking at the samsung a9 deal but seems like the 4gb ram is not enough for this game. Would love some other options of similar price or if you have found that particular model suitable. Is upping the SD card something that can be done to assist? Sorry am new to this.

Thank you!

What age are the kids? Will they need iPad in school? Minecraft is pretty forgiving, my younger kid plays on a super old iPad which can’t even update YouTube anymore. It runs like ass though - takes forever to load in but when done it plays alright.

    • Kids are early primary. Yes we plan to either buy a new laptop that enables the game or a tablet just for gaming and doing homework for school. Is there a laptop that's good instead? Dont want to spend too much because they may drop it and damage so not mature enough to take care of a more expensive apple ipad etc.

      • Two schools of thought

iPad: most likely will be used for school too eg reading eggs , operating system more uniform (don’t need to stress about compatibility), and imo slightly more secure environment assuming everything stays updated. Can limit and monitor screen time with inbuilt measuring. Easily can get a drop proof case.

Laptop: might be slightly harder to troubleshoot in case of issues. Could also be used for homework. Minecraft modded is a HUGE game changer.

        • Thanks for your helpful comments. What is Minecraft modded? At the moment my kids like to put in lots of add ons and play with friends online on Minecraft.
Do you have recommendations or what comment on what your older kids use?

          • @sagrules: My older one uses my iPad Pro lol

But he watches some Minecraft streamers who use add ons and mods like the ultra hd textures, or pre build generators like being able to generate a custom sized sphere out of a material is a HUGE time saver - which you just can’t get easily on iPad.

        Kids are early primary.

Go to the library and borrow some books for them.

We go to the library regularly. Thanks for your unsolicited advice.

If the only use case is Minecraft, would a second hand Nintendo Switch be an option?

We tried it on the Switch already. It was very laggy and you need to have nintendo membership to play multiplayer online so wasn't worth the hassle. Also kids didnt like using the controller and we ended up returning the game as it kept glitching.

      • Can second that for the same reasons. My kids play on fairly low end lenovo tablets or phones, they both outperform the Switch sadly. And online multi costs extra. When I tried it, getting cross-platform to work consistently was a hassle too. Something that just works most of the time on Android or at least tells you clearly what to do to get it working if it isn't. Such as app version mismatch between clients. Easily resolved with minecraft app updates.

I got an A series for my kids, never again. They run super slow which is horrible for gaming. The same game always runs better on a S series.

    • I was going to say the same too. Me also got an A series two years ago, and it is now pretty much useless for any games. It is only okay for YT.

      • I have the A series with more RAM, it run's okish but not great

My kids just moved schools so have had to purchase ipads for them (yr 4 and 5), one thing I have noticed between the two is that I find the security controls on android to be far superior to what they are on ipads. It is a joke that I cannot manage my kids apple parent controls without having an apple device myself.

There is always work arounds to get access to the wider internet which I am sure they will eventually figure out, but the google standard controls have worked well for me, and ultiamtely allowed me to use adguard to block the ads from most of the free apps they download.

I would likely still buy one of the lenovo or xiaoxin tablets right now if I had the need to buy a tablet and wasn't dictated by having to be in the apple ecosystem.

      Agreed.
We're largely an Android house, but I went with an iPad most recently when replacing a tablet because Price:Performance was a no brainer IMHO.
Parental controls on my daughter's Samsung S4 tab are significantly better than on the iPad.

However. Kids are brutal with technology.
No matter how well behaved your child, a tablet will get stepped on, pushed off the edge of the table and dropped, if not thrown.
Before you buy, check whether you can get an EVA Foam case for the tablet. (This pretty much eliminates any non-Samsung or non-iPad option.)
and as above, if you want something with power, you fall into the Price:Performance comparison that the base model iPad wins easily.
