  • Has anyone got recommendations on Zigbee controller and COB light strip?

Check BTF lighting - I have used them and can recommend they have great quality products.
DM if you have any questions

      Controllers:
      I use Gledopto GL-C-006P for CW/CC - supported by Zigbee2MQTT
There are other model for other strip types.

Next time I will try their new Pro controller like GL-C-203P. There are few types again but each type supports few strip types. The main reason - higher current.

      Strips:
I've heard BTF Lightning is good.
I used other no-name brand before I learned it. Next time I will look into BTF Lightning. Although it's COB strip got more legs so requires higher current per m.

  • Probably a stupid question, but can I just buy 2 base kits to get a length of 4 metres or do I need to buy the 1m extensions which are a lil more pricey?

    • Unless u r a part of this hue ecosystem and want to spend the extra $$ I personally do not recommend. You can easily pick a better FCOB strip for a lot less. Note- this one is not addressable and will only show one color for the entire light strip at one time.

Now to answer your question. Base kit has one side plugged into a power source and other open to connect extensions. If you have 2 base kits u have 2 power sources one on each and . If u connect both sides and have them joined .. it will
Lead to a small firework with potentially some smoke and can be a somewhat expensive firework.

      • Can u name some brands that are both better and cheaper as you say? I’m not in the ecosystem, but do have the Hue lightstrip and find it excellent. I also bought a cheap lightstrip off amazon but the quality is nowhere near as good as the Hue. The difference is night and day. So I’m genuinely interested to hear about which ones are better than Hue that cost loss.

Ikea version is Hue compatible and works really well.

      • I’ve got Hue lights everywhere, but if the base kits have the same ends (like you say, rather than a male end on one side and female end on the other), I guess it won’t work unless I cut them and use a joiner.

I don’t care for addressable or cheap light strips that need wifi to work. Hue is more expensive but it doesn’t disconnect and still works even when there’s an internet outage.

        Thanks for the reply though!

      • Are the FCOB strips Zigbee? Wondering if they can be used in HA.

Hue Led Strips in this post is "3-in-1 kit":
          1. Power supply
          2. Zigbee RGBW controller
          3. RGBW strip

Yes, there are other Zigbee led strip controllers, some of them are compatible with Home Assistant ZHA, some of them are compatible with Zigbee2MQTT (or both).
Yes, there are other led strips, some of them are FCOB.

I use few Gledopto controllers (see my post above) in Home Assistant via Zigbee2MQTT.

    • But can I just buy 2 base kits to get a length of 4 metres

      Short answer - yes.
Extension will be just a led strip without power supply and controller.
Keep in ming they are multiple generations of Hue Led Strips and led strip itself might be different in different generation.

Whether you want Hue Led Strip or not - bigger topic.

Thoughts on this to be used as under kitchen cabinet lighting strip? If not, any recommendations? Would prefer one that could ideally bend in a 90 degree angle at one point.

Have been using one under the overhead cupboards for several years now. Does the job, works great.

    • I have seen 90° corner pieces, requires cutting the strip and inserting a right angle plastic joiner.

Depends if u want the color to change or a consistent color . Also if visiblenu will see dots as it’s not an FCOB.
I would use it inside a channel since it’s not water proof and kitchen do tend to accumulate some amount of oil/grease from frying .. if u want just a single color seamless version search for Fcob lights .. they tend be lot brighter and have no dark spots .. good luck ..

  • Decent price, the plugs on these things are bloody massive though. I just put 4 gradient strips on all sides of a TV.

    • Oh man I just ordered yesterday. I hope that plug doesn't become a problem because the powerboard is already packed.

  • 2M long how many do I need for 85inch tv?

Some other people in the comments are recommending getting 90° adaptors or flexi connection

    • -1

You'll need 3 of the 2m ones because you're going to need about 6m in total to do a full perimeter. You might also need adapters to connect them all together.

I'd check if there's a longer strip like 5m and an 1m extension so you have to do just one joint.
