Cracked Screen iPhone 15 Pro - What Would You Do?

iPhone 15 Pro screen is cracked. Options I have:

  • Get an after-market replacement for $300+.
  • Get an original screen replaced with Apple for $500+
  • Wait for iPhone i7 to release in September. Trade in the cracked iPhone and buy iPhone 17 Pro for $1300+ after trade in.

Are my price assumptions above correct, and what would you do?

    15 pro with cracked screen = $50

      damn! High yield.

    • +1

      Yep
And every option is BAD NEWs for OP unfortunately.

All depends how long OP wants to keep thier iPP15.

Aftermarket price for iPhones with non-genuine replacemeent screen is not good at all.

If OP plans to keep the iPP15 then go with an aftermarket OLED screen.
Avoid the cheap incell screens. They are nothing but trouble.
If OP plans to upgarde to the iP17 then trade it in.

    Set it on fire.

      grim but expected.

If you’re prone to damaging your iPhones consider apple care plus next time. You can pay monthly.

    • I will consider. This is my first careless phone damage in over 10 years.

  • +2

    Pay the $549.
I'd say swear off Apple for refusing to sell spare parts, but others are not much better.
A genuine Pixel 8 pro screen can be bought, but will cost ~$370, and isn't easy to DIY.

Aftermarket screens will break even more easily than the original.

I looked into it a little, and it turns out that if I get an aftermarket screen replacement, it doesn't work with Apple's True Tone and Brightness features.
So the hardware is locked along with the software.

I would not buy an eppil at the first place!

But the Germans don’t make phones?

      • -4

I use Windows Phone made by Nokia. They do make good phones, too. But Germans are the 'best' at 'engineering', not necessarily at 'tech'. I appreciate semsang, motorolo, nokia, eppil etc quality. People here do not appreciate the quality of 'German Engineering' :)

Thankfully they don’t make phones. I’d hate to have a phone that’s in the shop as often as their cars. Would their phones come with a check engine light too?

        • I was only following a 2 door expensive looking Audi coupe this afternoon that was blowing heaps of black smoke every time they accelerated, and had a faulty led taillight… not too old but just enough to be out of warranty as a guess - I felt kinda sorry for the person that bought it, not because I sympathise with them in that way,… but sorry for them in the way you do for someone with a mental deficiency, because I bet they still think they have some sort of premium product in delusion land from the unfounded VAG brand hype

Book a cheap holiday to vietnam.
Get screen repaired from any of the hundreds of repair shops and also have battery replaced while you're at it.
A good battery will be replaced for $45. Not sure how much the screen is.

Just a word of warning OP - which it looks like you've picked up - these types of aftermarket repairs will void the ability to trade it in (at least with Apple directly).

I did this (unknowingly - as in I didn't know this would be an issue) - I got my iPhone screen repaired in Thailand (this was back to the iPhone 5C (IIRC?) - and about a year after this event, I decided to get a new iPhone, and the plan was to trade in the current phone. Apple store was happy to do so, until they inspected the iPhone and advised that due to the screen being replaced by an aftermarket, they cannot trade it in.

You've been blessed. Buy a Samsung, and thank god, for this intervention.

    iPhones are so shit

It’s still $319 to replace a Samsung s25 ultra screen

      https://www.samsung.com/us/support/crackedscreenrepair/

      • +1

Doesn't that support their case? Even with repairs it's cheaper to use a Samsung..

        • Also this is the pro, and that is the Ultra. So pro max would prolly be like 700

      • Well. Screen replacements aren't cheap on any devices. U should be buying screen protectors/cases.

    • This… I paid $900 for the top of the Line Galaxy, and got free top of the line earbuds as well.

Why Apple users continue to pay extra for the same/worse bewilders me.

Apple's green bubble bullying campaign. Teen girls bully each other to use iPhone. Androids are dead, amongst teen girls. Dudes don't care for the most part, I think we're split 50/50, slight victory to Android.

My android/FOSS ecosystem works just as well, and works any system. Maybe not as smoothly as Apple, but I have access to widely more products.

        • shame you can't all the apple features with your MacBook and Samsung phone lol
          wasted $$ you paid for

What if you want 0-day OS updates? What if you want fully-encrypted Messaging? What if you want platform unity between Mac/iPad/iPhone? What if you want inbuilt iCloud sharing features, Safari Web Relay, iCloud backup (still haven't seen anything close to this on other platforms) whereby if I restore my iCloud backup to a new phone it is virtually identical to the previous phone? What if I want a baked-in Password manager that is encrypted and backed up to iCloud? What if you don't want your phone usage monetised by advertisers? What if you want to use family sharing of apps/music/media? What if you want access to the Find-my network, unrivalled by any other platform, so that all your Apple devices are locatable if they're within range of ANY other Apple device (not just your own devices)? What if you want to use an inbuilt video-calling platform that is fully encrypted and, yet again, unrivalled by any other platform? A video-calling platform that is unified across their entire offering? What if you want access to actually receive customer support when you have issues? I walked into an Apple store to pay for a replacement battery on my iPhone SE; they replaced the phone on the spot, no fee. Do you get that with Samsung?

What happens if you have an issue with your Google account - is there not thousands upon thousands of reports about how insanely difficult it is to even call Google support?

These are just things off the top of my head. But do go on.

what was the last iPhone you had John Barosa?

  • -2

You can buy a decent Android phone for the cost to repair your iPhone.

    • -8

Don't lie to the man. Cheapest "decent" android phone you can get is the S25, which is maybe 700 on discount. I personally got mine for 526 though. Pixel phones are crap, Samsung low ends are crap and other android brands just aren't as good.

  • +2

    I assume you like iOS.
I would personally avoid the aftermarket option. Could have issues.

  • +1

Fix it with an aftermarket screen, sell it privately and use the proceeds of the sale to buy the iPhone 17 (that's going to work just like every other iPhone!).

  • Explain the trade in deal more cause cracked screen would make trade in worth nil I would think
