We got an over engineered masher before gta6
Will definately break
Or it’ll always turn sideways when you’re trying to mash, rendering it useless.
It has a cylindrical sleeve that locks it into place, but if that breaks then you're correct, it will be useless.
that's just going to gunk up with mash you mean
You still talking about Joseph Joseph or have you moved onto talking about my wife?.Just checking..
Your wife is just tired from mashing with Joseph and Joseph that there’s no energy left for you.
Yes!
Can be used to spank as well
Technicolourly true
Thats a paddlin!
Recently ordered the OXO 34581 Good Grips Smooth Potato Masher . No idea if it's any good yet but it looks like it will last the distance .Very happy with our OXO tongs and peeler . $20 on Amazon
As an alternative, I can highly recommend the IKEA potato masher. Robust, wide swath that is easy to clean, while still mashing things efficiently!

ikea in for the save, again!! 😏
I’m all about the old school wire potato mashers. Can’t go wrong with them. IKEA has one for ~$7. No point over thinking these things..
Ha I just said this in another comment chain on this thread. Best masher I've ever owned, honestly!

Tweenty twooo buxxxx for a masha??! Must be damn fancy
Main advantage of this is only when not in use - its easier to store flat (in drawer). Wow!
But introduces a weakness with the hinge!
Many alternative solutions…
Grab an ordinary masher & store in deeper drawer! Plenty good & very cheap in op shops!
Or use a different method to mash…
Most mixer or food processor will do the job - quicker. Handy if you already have one.
Used to mash enormous quantity for large kitchen feeding hundreds - using an industrial Hobart mixer. So easy.
etc
Their whole brand is trying to solve problems that don't exist or with solutions that are no good. Trash imo.
Not only does it store better in a drawer, it's also got a far greater chance of fulfilling the other great potato masher function - making sure you can't open the drawer! Put it in the drawer, leave it there, get other stuff in and out of the drawer, slightly knocking the masher so it opens gradually until you need to do keyhole surgery on the drawer to unjam it.
Simply hang up a hand masher to avoid that.
We shove ours in amongst all the other long utensils in a couple of cylindrical stainless steel containers. They've got handy drainage holes that allow them to be cable tied together so they're more stable.
Mixers or food processors can get gummy. If you have a masher attachment, its just like a potato ricer which is superior to mashers.
That usually means you're not using machine correctly.
Likely problem is machine is underpowered for task, incorrect choice of blades etc, or overloaded with food.
Simple solution - process smaller amount of mash at time.

Can does not mean will, but it also isn’t ideal.
Or use a different method to mash…
Use a fork.
Buy a potato ricer and never use one of these ever again
100% this
Agree with this.
And if you want to mash rice, you buy a rice-potatoer
Well obviously I need you to recommend me a great rice-potatoer…
Highly recommend the Joseph Joseph potato ricer instead
It's also on sale at 45% off on Amazon
Yep, I have one and recommend iit
I've never used a potato ricer before. Looking at the pics - don't you still need to mash it, to make it soft and creamy?
Microwave the potato - stick it in ricer, squeeze - bam - instant mash potato.
You should have cut and boiled the potato first. Then just put them inside and squeeze.
I watched a YouTube clip on it, earlier. The guy cut and boiled the potatoes… Then spent a fair bit of time squeezing them. Finally he added in warm milk and melted butter (he needed to melt it… Extra step with this ricer method).. then after all that… He stirred it up with a fork.
I'll stick with the regular potato masher. Less work.
@clandestino: Ricer exists to get smoother mash which you might miss with a regular masher. I mean, I've been using a puree attachment and it can mash 1.5kg potatos in about a minute or 2 to very smooth consistency.
Seriously, looks like it'll break
Get a potato ricer from IKEA and stop eating like a caveman
Don't use nylon (or other plastics) on hot foot or hot surfaces.
Use silicone or steel
Nylon is fine for what this will be used for, unless your mash is somehow reaching 500C.
Some people mash in the pot while still cooking
With water?
You're all old skool.
I buy my potato already mashed, from the freezer section of the supermarket.
Sounds like it would likely taste pretty mediocre and have awful texture.
Great in a pinch, but nowhere near a fresh cooked serving of mash.
Joseph Joseph Delta
ok calm down. Joseph and joseph acting like they invented the spoon. 😂
on the plus side that word reminded me of Top Gun Maverick. such a wild ride great movie going to enjoy it now.
Ah yes.. a potato masher, for $22. Just what I needed.
If gives a very smooth mash without lumps. Why persist with a crap cheap masher? Been there, done that, learnt the lesson.
A lot of people are just cheap because they don't know better… some just cant afford it.
The whole "buy high quality" is underpinned by the below:

@ThadtheChad: Extra credit for Terry Pratchett quote. We lost him way too soon and it was all so tragic.
If you haven’t got into Tom Stoppard you really should. He is a playwright who did “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead” but I think his best play is Arcadia.
“All your life you live so close to truth, it becomes a permanent blur in the corner of your eye, and when something nudges it into outline it is like being ambushed by a grotesque.”
― Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
@try2bhelpful: Thank you very much for the recommendation. I completely agree. I was so distraught that I haven't been able to bring myself to read the last couple of books he's written, just because that would mean I would have finished all of his works.
Thanks again mate. Also obligatory, "username checks out!".
@ThadtheChad: Unfortunately the quality of the books dropped off a tad as the dementia took hold but rereading his books is always a treat anyway. My favourites are Thud and Carpe Jugulum. One of my cats is named Esmeralda Weatherwax. Unfortunately, she does seem to have the qualities of her namesake, which can be a tad challenging. You think I would’ve learnt from the one I called Morgana Le Fay.
“You had to admire the way perfectly innocent words were mugged, ravished, stripped of all true meaning and decency, and then sent to walk the gutter for Reacher Gilt, although “synergistically” had probably been a whore from the start.”
― Terry Pratchett, Going Postal

to me it's known as a tiktok brand. at one point their products were circulating a lot, friend just "had to have" the laundry basket with removable bags. I tried to wait until sale to see if I would buy it as a gift for them, but price was still too much.
I have to agree, received the masher and its ok. but not "looks expensive " good.
Potato masher! {Kaaaboom}
