  • Do we find soap to be more cost effective than body wash in general?

    • +3

I would say so. The cheapest body wash I can find us the 1L at ALDI for $4.49. It wouldn't come close to outlasting a few bars of soap though.

Thanks. Thought I’ve been failing at personal hygiene :P

how many Doves died to create this soap?

I bought 3x4 bars back then, with 4 bars in stock, I now have 5 unopened bars left. So 11 bars lasted me about 1.5 years.

      • I found a box of soap bars (about 20, some are jumbo size) when I moved house about five years ago. Thought I’d use them up first. Then whenever I had to travel, I would end up buying another 4-pack from Aldi or something (generally don’t use the stuff from the Airbnb home). I just checked and I still have 12 bars left. Some lasted longer than others. Haven’t touched the Dove ones yet.

I've still got 15x 4pks of the 100g bars (from 2 years ago) that were discounted to $3 to clear out the stock and make way for Dove's 90g enshitification replacement, so I think I'm loaded up enough for now.

  • +2

Are these like the only soap bars that dont turn to jello halfway way through using them?

    • +2

I've tried the goat milk soap from aldi and they stayed quite firm.

    • Dove is not actually soap, that's why they call it a beauty bar, it's a detergent mixed with moisturisers. That is why I think it doesn't become mush like real soap

      • Ah that's interesting.

However I don't recall my soap bars turning to goop back in the day? Even the cheapo reject shop Palmolive bars my parents used to get would stay solid until it's a thin sliver.

Nowadays it seems like all the cheap bars turn to goop after a few uses and the expensive ones less so.

        • I bought a protex bar and remember them being as hard as a rock, now its mush after a few weeks of use

These were good when they were made in Germany. Now they're all made in Indonesia and they don't lather nearly as well.

Edit: Amazon says country of origin actually is Germany for these ones, time to stock up!

    • +4

Some of the reviews say that they received the Indonesian product despite the photos showing the one made in Germany.

    • Wrong picture says Made in Germany, but I received Made in Indonesia.
      I returned them.

      • Same here but I'm ok with it (didn't even know before). And for me it is to send overseas as part of gift boxes etc so it doesn't matter.

  • The other flavour is available too

    • +10

I prefer the taste of original

You know when your mum tells you to wash your mouth out with soap…?

  • $3.55 @ checkout with code

  • +2

    Are they price matching anyone?

    Would prefer to avoid Amazon…

  • +1

Sub & Save, so we just need to remember to cancel this subscription before the next automatic delivery?

    • +1

You can cancel it pretty much immediately, I always remember to after I receive it

    • +2

As long as it has progressed order stages, if you cancel super early it might totally cancel it, I normally wait until it has shipped.

People think this is somehow cheating it, but they dont lock in prices, it could jump $100 next order and you would have to pay that would be insane system.

      • +1

Also, it's not cheating when Amazon literally has an option for the reason behind the cancellation that says 'I wanted the initial discount'.

        • The cancellation 'Reason', is now optional.

        • To keep the scam going I just say I created it by accident.

  • Why is it marked as oos?

Still available for me. I ordered 4 lots of subscribe and save using 4 coupon codes.

  • Back in stock for me

  • I bought some, too lazy to drive all the way to Costco…

  • Coupon gone? I got $4.27 for a pack with s&s

    • +1

      Still works for me

      • Ah thanks again. Just found it. Cancelled my previous order and placed with coupon.

  • A real OzBargainer makes their own soap.

PS: On a more serious note, it's really easy to make soap at home. It's not cheaper, but it's more fun.

    • Does it work out to be cheaper than $3 a bar? I'm keen to learn if it's just as good and doesn't turn soft half way

      • It would be cheaper than $3 a bar, but this deal is $3 for 4 bars.

I was half joking as it's not about the cost. I do it because (1) I can adjust the parameters such as lather, cleaning, hardness etc, and (2) it feels better to use my own soap even though I don't think there's anything wrong with the factory made ones.

I'm keen to learn if it's just as good and doesn't turn soft half way

It depends on the oils/fats you use. With 20-25% coconut oil it's even harder and drier than the supermarket ones (some people even find it too dry). It's definitely as good if not better.

    • Already did a few batches back in the covid days when stuck inside house with nothing much else to do, it was indeed fun back then. After two three batches we were left with whole lot of ingredients still unused to date. Yes it was definitely not cheaper than this, especially when we do small batches and lot of ingredients going to waste or expired.
If you liked chemistry back in high school or college, chances are you would have at least tried making soap once in your life (hopefully you stop there lol iykwim).

      • +1

Note that the oils are still usable for soap making after they expire. I think there are ways to salvage even rancid oils.

Also Dove is not "soap", so not exactly apples to apples.

  • Perfect gift for your single mates

  • I collected the coupon , but it doesn't automatically apply in the checkout. What am I doing wrong?

  • Costco members: $23.99 for a box of 16 X 135g Dove Original Beauty Cream Bar.

    • +1

      23.99 / (16 x 135) x 100 = ~ $1.11 per 100g

      3.08 / (4 x 90) x 100 = ~ $0.86 per 100g

      • Plus Amazon delivery charges.

        • I believe subscribe and save is only there for prime members so delivery is free. Costco also requires membership (similar to Prime).

          • @WhatsTheBigDeal: Yes to both.

I was being informative not argumentative.

Paid Prime members get it free delivery as well as paid Costco members get it free delivery pickup … when also getting fuel, food, etc.
Also Costco free delivery pickup gives the chance to get repulsive and disgusting pizza & hot dogs as well; but Prime members do not ;-]
