I got this kit ages ago. Quality bit of kit.

  • +1

This is an amazing quality kit, I am looking for a reasonably priced Metabo impact wrench which is harder to find

  • This or DeWalt?

    • +3

If you only need a drill & impact driver and it has to be 18V, this deal is the best value on the market right now - Metabo is a quality brand.

If you're going to buy more tools over time, DeWalt has a thriving secondary market for tools as well as much better, more regular deals and wider product range, but if you need it right now it's too bad because you've missed all the deals and I wouldn't expect more for a few months at least.

      • Considering what you said about the ecosystem, would it be worth it to pay the extra $50 on this comparable De Walt set? (Note: I need a drill right now).

        https://www.bunnings.com.au/dewalt-2-piece-18v-brushless-com…

        • Hardly a fair comparison. 2x 1.5A batteries vs 4A and 5.5A on the Metabo.

The metabo drill and impact are much higher quality. Metal chucks, metal front housing etc.

    • This is much heavier

  • I have this, very good quality. What tools compatible with metabo. Need a lawn mower and line trimmer
    To manage my 30sqm yard.

Metabo are part of the CAS (www.cordless-alliance-system.com) battery group so, in theory, these batteries should be cross-compatible with a heap of other products and brands. However, a lot of these brands (https://www.cordless-alliance-system.com/en/brand-world.php) are pretty niche. But hey, the idea of a battery that's "universal" like USB is great, right?

    • It's a bit like Bosch's AmpShare, but only Bosch Professional and Fein are brands of any relevance to most people out of the participating ones

    • +1

CAS is big in europe , less so in australia.

      • Absolutely right. Unless you're looking at some very specialised products in very specific industries, you're probably not going to find a lot of overlap. It's one of those things that if it gets enough push, it could change a lot of people's buying habits. But even within one manufacturer (like TTI), there's not much incentive to have the same battery platform across multiple brands, even though it would be a lot cheaper to manufacture.

    • They look quite similar to Ozito / Einhell but seems like the pin locations are different… one of the smallest adapters I have seen though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR1m93hrnPg

  • Got this, now on a mission to find a working battery adapter to use CAS batts in AEG tools…

    • I bought one for CAS to Ryobi, which I have at home. Had to import, but company has now ceased making them.

      • pretty sure I saw that kind of adapter on ali. Metabo -> other tools shouldn't be a problem, but I am hearing reports of adapters FOR CAS not working as the tools have extra checks/logic and won't just straight up take 18V from +&- terms

        • I meant I used an adaptor to go from CAS batteries to Ryobi tools. That was fine. But I can imagine some higher end tools might have extra parts to stop using other brand batteries. The batteries are the profit in tool ecosystems.

  • Why do you need two separate drills, can't you have one drill that hammers and impacts?

    • +5

Different mechanism. Hammer drilling is for drilling into concrete, brick and masonry with masonry bits. The hammering action in a drill is axial, it vibrates back and forth. Think of it like hammering the back of the drill as it works.

Impact drivers apply tangential impact. It's like putting a screwdriver bit in a ratchet and whacking the handle on its end or putting the L socket on your car's lug nuts and jumping on it.

You should absolutely never set a drill to hammer mode and drive screws with it, it will destroy the stud or whatever you're screwing into. It will effectively turn your screw into a threaded nail or reamer.

      • +1

I've seen drills with a hammer switch that you can turn on or off so isn't that an impact drill with a hammer function?

        • +2

          Hammer DRILL and Impact DRIVER.

An impact driver is a specialist tool for driving in screws or bolts. It's not intended for drilling. The impact is to help turn the screw, it does not punch the screw in.

A hammer drill does hundreds of little punches while it drills, crushing and chipping masonary and cement to dust which the drill bit can bite into and remove. Most hammer drills can turn the hammer function off. You can also drive in screws with a drill (hammer off) but not as effectively as an impact driver, but still good for small jobs.

        • +1

No, not the same. A drill turned to hammer mode hammers the drill bit into the surface you're drilling into. An impact driver applies impacts in the direction of turning the fastener.

  • This or the Bosch 18V range on Amazon?

    https://www.amazon.com.au/bosch-18v/s?k=bosch+18v

    • +5

Metabo will overlast Bosch green series, no doubt.
If you really want Bosch, look for blue series tools.

    • Not the same, Bosch Blue is comparable to the Metabo gear advertised.

  • Metabo is top tier. Bosch green / Ryobi / Ozito are all DIY tier.
DeWalt / Milwaukee / Makita used to be roughly equal, but now DeWalt has definitely cheaped out. DeWalt is owned by Stanley Black and Decker since 2010, and quality has dropped.
Makita and Milwakuee would still be roughly equal to Metabo.

    • +1

Dewalt have some cheaper tools in the range like the 2 speed drill but their higher end ones equal or better anything the competition offer. The 54v ones especially. Makita also has a wide spectrum of quality/price.

  • Thanks OP. Looking for something to replace my old Ozito drill that spends half its time at my brother's place.

  • Lism

  • Thanks OP, bought one and had done many DIY projects already, good drills!

  • OOS

  • I got a metabo impact wrench from syd tools a couple of years ago. it stopped working after 3 use.
i shit you not, it took 10 months before i got it back from RMA.

I would rather get ozito/ryobi these days.
