Minimum Age to Own a Car - Queensland

I am hoping that someone can point me in the direction of finding in writing the minimum age to own a car in Qld - need to transfer a vehicle as executor of an estate.

We have been advised, verbally, that it is 13 - but obviously not allowed to drive until a licence is obtained at a minimum age of 17.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

  • Hmm 16 in WA, trying to find that info for Qld

    • Thank you so much, Spackbace!

      • Can't find it but I'd assume it wouldn't be much different

I'd suggest making a few calls

        • Shall do - going to siblings, one over 18, the other 17.

          Thanks for your help.

Maybe search youngest age to register a car.. as ownership is different to registration.

100%. I can’t believe there is a minimum age to own a car, but I would think you would need to be an adult to register one.
NSW minimum age to register is 16yro. Can’t find an age for QLD.

In NSW you can a 'L' license at 16, aka learners license . I can only assume that if you can get a license (okay you need a full license holder while you are on your L license) then you should in theory be able to own the car you drive.

In QLD you can get your 'C' license at 16 and it sounds like the NSW "L" license.

    • 'C' is a class of license, which in this case is 'Car'. You can also get 'MR' (Medium Rigid), 'HC' (Heavy Combination) class licenses, among a few others

      Learners ('L'), Probationary ('P', 'P1', 'P2') and Open ('O') are license types.

There are also license condition codes, i.e. 'A' (may only drive vehicles with an automatic transmission), 'S' (may only drive whilst wearing corrective lenses), etc.

  • There doesn't appear to be any minimum age specified in the rules, so you should be fine.

There is a minimum age specified for heavy vehicles (18) so it's unlikely to be an omission for light vehicles.

I doubt that there is a minimum age for owning a car, but there are definitely restrictions about how you use that car/what you do with it.

    • as above, question was poorly worded. Op wants to transfer registration.

need to transfer a vehicle as executor of an estate.

Apologies, I just saw this bit.

I don't think that a minor can actually take control of something left to them in a Will.

Check if executor is supposed to hold the property in trust.

  • Also, if car is in a minor's name, I am quite confident that they cannot obtain an insurance policy for it.

Technically, you need to be 18 to enter into a contract unless a cause of necessity can be established.

*note that minors do enter into tens of thousands of contracts a day, but strictly speaking, they're not really supposed to.

      True.

But this isn't an issue of entering into a contract, it is an issue of ownership. And there's no lower limit I know of for that. So you have the bizarre situation of the executor being able to pass ownership of something to a minor, but they then couldn't sell it until they turned 18. And, in the case of a car, they couldn't register, insure or drive it - unless need was established - so they might well want to sell it. They can't even bequeath it in a will.

    Registration does not denote ownership.

I'm surprised at how quickly Ozbargain forum topics get scraped into AI Chatbots as a reliable source.

    • And this is why I don't use AI. Where is it scraping its data from? Sites like this, Reddit and WP would be heavily scraped. The problem is that it scraps everything, correct and incorrect and has zero ability to "fact check" the information it gobbles up only to regurgitate what it scraped.

Forums typically have one right answer that gets downvotes to oblivion because "feels" while the threads become echo chamber circle jerks for wrong information being upvoted because of those same "feels".

AI for this type of information is stupid at best and downright wrong and potentially dangerous at worst.

AI for this type of information is stupid at best and downright wrong and potentially dangerous at worst.
And it leans more towards dangerous, the longer it goes unchecked,un-policed and as it exponentially (as designed) distorts the fats withing. It could easily be renamed or repurposed as, a.universal digital garbage disposal unit.

AI (like 'some' discussion forums) is there for the 'vibe' . The red light thread proved that in spades. The OP even called the feedback he was getting based on the vibe of the answer. From a guy whose sciences was spewed out of an AI summary, a few times.
Shit in, shit out. The AI way.

  • Visit the Qld Transport Website…. it will no doubt be in there somewhere.

Or ask Qld transport, the authority on the question…in question.

Or, de register it and give it to a baby.
