  • Are these considered good? Any better/cheaper android alternatives?

    • +8

Imo the best trackers if you're ok with them being on the samsung network. They have UWB and great battery life. Good price here.

      • +2

You're more likely to find that your phone doesn't have UWB. Fot example it isn't supported in base model S23, S24 etc but is supported in 23+ and the ultras

Agreed it's a good price. Stick it in power saving mode and then hide it in your car or put it on your keyring

    • +1

      Best option on Android.
Only caveat is being locked into the Samsung ecosystem

      • +2

To be clear, you can "unlock" them if you want: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4bgrvGu41c

        • How many people here are using uTag? It looks like a decent solution, if it works as well as it claims to.

          • +1

@klaw81: I've played around with it for 3-4 weeks on my Pixel 8 Pro. Seems to work well. I did have some trouble adding a new Samsung Smarttag to my Samsung account on the Pixel, and had to use an old Samsung phone. But I probably could have gotten it working eventually without using the Samsung phone.

            • @soymeat: I had the same issue with my P8 Pro and had to switch to my tablet to add the tags. Are you able to see Samsung find in the SmartThings app? I cannot see it and I think that is why it won't add.

          • @klaw81: I am using it and it is a great option except I can't seem to add tags or see Samsung find on the app on my Pixel 8 Pro - I can just see the tags. Sometimes view map errors but works on second load.

        • Thanks for this, recently switched from a Samsung to Pixel. Will give this a shot.

  • +1

Thanks, just picked up a set!

  • price now back to 109

    • Still shows as $87.20 in cart. It even comes up with a reminder saying "Extra AU $21.80 off seller's price with code"

  • +2

Thanks OP! Even comes with free express shipping!

Took the plunge and ordered a Z Fold7 for an insane price using a friends staff code… long time iPhone user (currently using a 16 pro max)… lets see how this goes!

  • What is the range on these?

    • +1

AI says: The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 has a Bluetooth range of up to 120 meters (approximately 394 feet) . But typical bluetooth range. UWB is usually when you are under 10 metres away.

      • So no GPS or scanning other Bluetooth/wifi networks?
Ordered but will cancel if it's pointless. I got a Samsung s25 but don't typically use any of the Samsung stuff but have the smart things app (which the soundbar always appears offline).

        Seems ok:

Large Finding Network: Like Apple's AirTags, the SmartTag2 relies on a network of other Samsung Galaxy devices to pinpoint its location when out of your phone's direct Bluetooth range. In densely populated areas with many Samsung users, this network is robust, significantly increasing the likelihood of finding lost items.

        • +3

None of the common tracking tags have GPS or WiFi capabilities. They all rely on Bluetooth (and some also use UWB).

A device with GPS and/or WiFi would need a much bigger battery.

  • +1

this only works on Samsung right? not other androids like moto g75?

    • It can work on other Android devices if you install a modified version of Samsung Smartthings (see uTag discussion above).

  • +1

My initial impression of these is not great. Very slow to update and inaccurate even at close range. Likely depends on use case though.

    • Apparently these are the best option for Android (if you have a Samsung)?

I'm not sure how many use cases there are - leave one in car, on in bag, one on keys.

Do you know if you can split up the set and can use with other devices (don't need four)? I don't see why not and each one would be treated separately right?

      • +1

You can use them independently with any galaxy phone. My wife uses one, my son uses one, i share two of them between my wife and I to track our cars…

        • I figured as much and will work out well.

          Copped, cheers.

      • I tried to use it to keep track of son visiting neighbours but unfortunately this didn't work for me.

        • Is the phone supported, did he take it with him..?

Probably a bit hit and miss by nature, the find my phone probably works well enough (if they have their phonel.

        • this would not be good for tracking your kids. They only give regular updates in very populated areas (like CBD). UWB (with utag) only seems to work if you're within 5 or so metres away from you target. If you want real-time tracking, you would need to use an app like Life360. I mainly use it to track my keys but might look into getting the motorola one as it is not exclusive to samsung and hopefully provides more regular updates.

          • @navegante88: So would you recommend the Samsung one if you have a new UWB phone? No point trying to track something if it has to be 5m away.

As much as I hate the apple ecosystem, those airtags just seem to work without any of these threads. Haven't looked into the moto one but apparently good if you don't have a Samsung.

            • +2

              @G-rig:

No point trying to track something if it has to be 5m away.

You seem to misunderstand how these tags work. The UWB is only for pinning down an exact location. Bluetooth is the primary method used for communication.

The tags themselves have no idea where they are. They simply emit a Bluetooth signal with a unique identifier, that nearby mobile devices can detect.

Mobile devices (phones and tablets) normally have an internet connection and a GPS location. When a mobile device "hears" a signal from a nearby tag, it registers the tag's unique identifier and signal strength, and transmits that information plus the mobile device's location to the tracker network. Thus, the network knows roughly where your tag is, based on various devices reporting that tag as being nearby.

When you want to know where your tag(s) are, the network can give you an approximate "bubble" of area where your tag was last detected. With your own knowledge of where you've been lately, you can probably narrow down the location to within a few metres.

Lastly, you can usually cause the tag to beep loudly a few times to locate exactly where it is. Or, if your phone and tag are UWB capable, you can use that to find the exact location simply by following the phone's direction indicator.

There's one more catch - only devices within each tracker network can report your tag's location. The more devices are on the network, the more likely it is that somebody has recently been close enough to your tag to hear that signal and update its position on the network. For AirTags, it's all modern iPhones and iPads. For Samsung Tags, it's all modern Samsung devices. For Moto/Chipolo/Pebblebee Tags, it's all Android devices with that specific setting enabled (see below). For Tile tags, it's any iOS or Android device with the Tile app installed.

As much as I hate the apple ecosystem, those airtags just seem to work without any of these threads.

AirTags work well because Apple enables the network on all their devices by default, and they have a LOT of devices out there in the wild.

In theory, the Android "Find My Device" network should be just as good or even better, but for some reason Google are not enforcing switching on the appropriate setting by default. It's an inherent downside of the diversity of Android devices.

              • @klaw81: Yeah mate I've never bothered with them (because of all this and that they aren't as good as airtags).

I've ordered some anyway and since been looking into it very quickly. Sounds like it's handy if your keys are lost somewhere in home etc but sounded like other people's devices would assist with locations if they are on the Samsung network (smart things) and get a ping off those etc.

I suppose and thought with airtags you can track lost luggage around the world, which is what I'd expect from this type of device. Once a relatives handbag and car was stolen and the airtag said it was up at a nearby shopping centre. Helped recovery it immensely.

Android find my phone has worked for me in the past, to the last know location.

Anyway will test it out and could always return for free.

That's exactly what they all do.

Some of them may be slightly less accurate or have lesser coverage due to the size of their networks, but all of the big ones are pretty effective. There are plenty of direct comparisons on Youtube if you want to see how effective they are.

I've been using Tile devices for many years now, and they've proven their worth many times. My problem is that Tile tags are quite expensive these days, and are very rarely discounted so I"m looking for alternatives.

                  • @klaw81: Cheers for that yeah I think it would be fine.
No doubt there are more apple phones on their network but Samsung would be the next biggest

            • +1

@G-rig: From my experience, the UWB doesn't work that well (maybe because I am using a pixel 9 pro not an official Samsung Device) but the good thing about these tags are that you can press a button and an alarm will ring. This makes it quite easy to find your things (even without UWB). I guess UWB would only be useful in the scenario where your item is missing and in a very noisy place.

I haven't had personal experience with the apple tags, but saw my friend able to use the precise finding and it seemed like the range was way further and more accurate. The apple one however, can't ring / make a sound from my knowledge.

Personally I would go with the moto. It also supports UWB and uses all android devices for tracking. It's early-ish days but most likely will buy a 4 pack to test it out when on sale.

              • @navegante88: Yeah cheers for that. I've been big android and pixel fan for years since the Nexus 6P. The pre-release deals have been pretty good over the years at JB etc but slowly getting worse. Most recently the cancel contract hacks have still been lucrative enough to pick up a top of the line Samsung the last few times. I miss a couple of productivity features and the camera (ease of taking a good photo) but much prefer the S25 on performance and battery.

So the Motorola sounds like the best one for all android devices but still not perfect or cheap yet as you say.

    • The design is good! The push button feature to find your phone is also something that not all trackers have

bought these last month .. worked more or less quite well .. I used them last week during my holiday to whitesundays

  • I price matched these at the good guys last week from centre com that have them for $99. https://www.centrecom.com.au/samsung-smarttag2-4-pack-2-x-wh…
They told me they are not restocking at TGG so stock levels may be limited.
with 1 week of use i am happy so far.

  • Any smart tag recommendations for a Pixel 8?

Would the Tile smart tag be a better option?

    • Would the Tile smart tag be a better option?

Tile and Moto Tag are the best out-of-the-box options for non-Samsung Android phones. You just install the app, register your tag(s) and you're good to go.

Using SmartTags on a Pixel will involve side-loading a modified version of an app, and possibly give trouble with registration.
