Semi related - just bought a eureka minion Specialita 55 ($699) and the bloody difference in taste between that and a Breville grinder is amazing. Kicking myself for not doing it sooner.

    Using lime blue for reference.

    (Breville duel boiler user)

    • Yes, conical consumer vs flat prosumer. next upgrade though difference is likely to be just minimal.

      • I thought the same, but the jump from a Specialita to an AllGround was surprisingly big as well

        • +1

Fiorenzato AllGround? For my use case (milk drinks), I doubt the difference is big enough to justify the significant price gap. The improvement will likely mostly be in aesthetics or workflow.

    • Can you explain for those of us who have been on the fence, how so?

      • +2

Marginal gains. Probably a bit more 'flavour' or 'body'. Not as noticeable with milk coffees but depends how much you want to throw at this hobby.

Just look at more reviews. You can spend $5-600 and all these machines are flawed in some way.. noisy, slow, expensive, have up upgrade the burrs straight away, still get some retention/clumping etc.

    • Ooooh I would like to hear more… In the market to replace my Breville Grinder… Did you try DF64? Is it working straight out of the box? Or did you still have to Mod it?

  • +3

Bought StarSeeker E55 ($270) for a month. Happy with it. Can grind very fine. Burr grinder. https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005007031813482.html

Still rocking em0480 with shim mod for under 120$ at the time. Most of it is technique, care and freshness of the beans.

The app wasnt that good. Some hairy beans. Ill try this one instead

Why was my previous comment removed?

Look at the reviews of the sellers support. I chatted with them and found them evasive about warranty returns. They're in asia, I think Singapore, so a return at buyers expense would be more than the saving over buying locally. They say they'd send parts for repairs, but at least one person in those Amazon reviews found them tardy.

@wfdTamar It’s a new thread that’s why. Your original comment was in the other thread for the same deal that was posted this morning, but the thread was deleted.

If bought through Amazon.au I’m not sure why support from the market place seller DF64coffee matters, just speak to Amazon instead? Amazon can process a refund for defective items that were sold by a third party marketplace seller.

I do agree with you though that the mob who run DF64 Coffee are w*nkers. I contacted them just after purchasing my DF64 Gen 2 grinder from them through Amazon.au about a year ago, and politely asked if they would honour a better deal from their direct website that included an upgraded accessory for the same price, and they were quite rude in their response. I called them out on their bad customer service, they apologised, and used the excuse that Australians are the most demanding customers that they deal with on a daily basis.

Other than their questionable customer service, I haven’t had any problems with my DF64 Gen2 grinder over the last 12 months. It’s a fantastic grinder, I certainly don’t regret the purchase.

      • I asked where they are (so I could work out return shipping cost) and to negotiate a price using the argument that they needed to be significantly cheaper than local sellers to warrant the risk of the return cost. They never said where they are and repeatedly said 'we send parts for repairs'. I understood that, but just on the slight chance a return was required I wanted to know what I was up for. If they were so confidant it would never happen, why not pay for returns? That would get them more sales. They were too evasive (and I worked out return cost was $250 to China).

In the end their price was a bit more than a local one (they did offer an SSP burr set a fair bit cheaper). I could tell by their attitude they would be terrible if there was a problem and that one review I saw on the first page of reviews confirmed it (there may be other bad reviews, I didn't keep looking).

    • Usually direct from DF is a bit cheaper but it's well worth going through Amazon and relying on the 2 year returns/warranty (and ACL).

Looking at those thread DF are a bit hard to deal with and 1y warranty or something.

Shame there aren't any solid go-to grinders for $300-400.

Better to get italian/german made grinders.

    • +1

      Why is that?

  • I've been planning to get this for some time, but keep hesitating each time. Alibaba have these generic models for around $463 + $62 shipping ($525 approx) and you can upgrade the burr for $25 onwards. But you don't have the security of Amazon of course.

  • This appears to be too small to be a DF64 - isn’t this a DF54?

    • +1

The price is about right for DF64 and it says "DF64 gen 2" in the additional details. The DF54 should be cheaper.

It's dumb when the company name is DF64 as wellm

  • Got this for $640 a few months ago - the flat burrs produce lots of static and makes it really messy, even with the "plasma ioniser" and RDT spray. Taste is great though.

    • Always something, spending over $600 and they still have niggles and can't get it right. That's why I haven't bothered upgrading.

    • @cpho I don’t have that issue with my DF64 gen 2, the plasma ioniser does its job reducing the static leaving no mess for me. If yours doesn’t and it’s messy then a faulty unit would be my first guess. Are you sure you didn’t buy a gen 1 DF64 grinder instead of a gen 2 model, because the gen 1 model creates quite a bit of mess?

The only thing I can fault with the DF64 gen 2 is that it’s a little loud, but I don’t see how it’s major problem when a grind takes only 10 or so seconds.

Thanks - that's good to know actually. I'll try give their customer support team a message. It should be the Gen2 - I bought it from the same amazon link OP posted.

With the noise, I find it's the vibration, not the unit itself. If you lift up your grinder off the counter while it's grinding, it's surprisingly quiet. I've put a rubber mat underneath mine and it had somewhat helped reduce the vibration noise. Might try get an even thicker/squishier mat.

        • Yeah that tends to be the case with most, a rubber or hard foam mat would help.

They just don't get the design right for such a high price, it's not rocket science!

Got my DF64 delivered to Brisbane after two days (ordered on Tuesday and delivered on Thursday)
It came with the AU plug, upgraded cup, side-facing silver button, and an attachment for the prongs so that the cup is lifted and angled towards the chute to reduce mess
Made about 6 cups of coffee. Works very well and is ridiculously fast. Upgraded from a Fellow Opus conical burr grinder which was very frustrating with the amount of retention.
DF64 has no retention (when using the bellows)
Make sure to calibrate the DF64 when you get it
Overall early days, but so far very happy with the purchase and the fast delivery

    • Good feedback, congrats.

    • How's the taste of your coffee now that you're grinding with the DF64? Mild or vast improvements?

      • +2

Taste is lighter and brighter with more clarity, however, I'd say it's a mild improvement. I think the taste may change and evolve (hopefully improve) as I get used to the grinder and the burrs become seasoned. I didn't bother seasoning these burrs and just started using it straight away
The vast improvement is on the workflow and this was the main reason I bought a new grinder.
My old Fellow Opus had a lot of retention and was very slow. Grinding 18g would take about 45 seconds with an additional 30 seconds of tapping to try and get all the grinds out. I did find the grind uniformity and the taste very good
The DF64 is less than 10 seconds total grinding time and pushing the bellows to get virtually zero retention
Overall the taste is marginally better so far, but the workflow is much less frustrating. To me, this has made the DF64 very much worth the upgrade
