Business Laptop - Budget $2,000 - $3,000

Hi all, looking for my daughter to buy a laptop for business for work from home with Zoom meetings full time, private practice.

Need good storage for programs. Currently have MSI laptop paid $1,000 a year ago however hardly able to use now as too slow. Don't game, don't stream moves. Looking for good screen size, good battery and good support. Open to Apple Mac even though she has a Samsung phone. Not tech savvy.

Appreciate anyone's help.

unable to write notes on current laptop.

      why?

    • the software websites will tell you what specs you need to run it properly.

What’s the model of the current laptop?
It should have an ssd. If not then putting one in with a fresh windows install should be good enough for those tasks.

It’s possible there are viruses and or malware slowing it down.

Make sure to backup important files photos documents ect

  • Thankyou for the info
Current laptop: MSI Modern 15 B12M-408AU 15.6" i7 Laptop Win 11, *BONUS MSI Item 1

      Which CPU? How much ram?

      This one is i7 12th Gen / 16GB / 512GB SSD

      https://www.amazon.com.au/MSI-Modern-B12M-408AU-Windows-Lapt…

and would centainly not have any issues running 99% of software unless you were into gaming…

It seems to have an i7 16GB RAM and 512GB ssd. This laptop should be able to handle the load you are describing.

It is possible that you will benefit from upgrading to 32GB RAM but hard to say without knowing the software being used.

It is possiblt a fault with the laptop or more likely there is a virus/malware installed.

  • Its not saving notes because too slow.

    • +1

      I doubt it…

    • Too many tabs in an internet browser open?

  • +6

Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

  • +8

Sounds like you need to reinstall Windows, or there might be a hardware fault. But first step is to just reinstall Windows first as that usually rules out anything software related.

Or some malware etc. If it's really as slow as OP is claiming for basic tasks, something is going on.

    Thankyou, appreciate all
your help. After comments will organise someone to have a look.

The big MacBook Air is what I'd get, the newer ones with the redesign. If you don't need any Windows specific apps then you might have a better time with Mac too.

    • Thankyou😀

I'd recommend a nice clean Snapdragon X device like a Surface Laptop.

Well specced for your moderate usage, great screen and keyboard/trackpad, and you'll have a full day of charge without it heating up or hearing a fan.

  • I would recommend she gets a desktop — unless she actually needs to "work" on the road, there is no benefit to getting a laptop. You get a much better bang for buck on a desktop, not to mention decent usability.

    • No benefit? The portability factor around the house is invaluable.

Haha. Portability factor around the house? That's an invaluable factor is it??

I have a standalone PC to actually work, and I have Laptop for working on the road. I have never found it useful to use the laptop from another room of the house, I can just go to my dedicated work area, and, you know — work. There has never been a moment in my 25-year career where I've gone — I need to work from the kitchen… If I need to Google something, there's always the phone.

        To each their own.

So you have 2 dedicated devices for work, this person asked for one. This alone seems like you’re supporting my statement.
Also, in 25 years you’ve never had to deal with a noisy neighbour/construction before and want to change rooms?

Being fixed in one location might work for you but if you’re recommending someone buy a single device, a laptop is a better choice.

          • @ColtNoir: Well I'm suggesting that the one device is a bigger stationary Pc. You seem to think that a desktop type implementation is completely immovable. It isnt, and you can move it to a different area when an infrequent requirement arises.

My broader point is that a notebook's main portability purpose is travel. Outside of a single location. So it can be put in a bag and easily transported. This is impractical to do with a Desktop. But at a single location? Someone's home? Piss easy.

Hence if there is no requirement for frequent travel. OP will get auch better bang for buck getting a desktop. As was my initial point.
