The End of the OzBargain Method and Cheap Phone Deals

PSA. JB Hi-Fi, TGG and Telstra have increased the voucher repayment fee to up to $1000, making most $X off and $0 JB mobile deals offered with the $99 plan not as good as before.

It's crazy how they all did it together. Are JB and TGG same ownership

i never even got to do it once, sigh, I only change phones every 5-6 years :(

so what will the payout figure be now?

    • That’s a good question, it says up to 1k so could be less…

    • I guess it will be $958.33

    • $1015 on the $99 plan.

these plans cost too much from the start.
just make the 99 dollar plan 59 dollars for 24 months

    • I don't think that's the issue, even if they do $59 plan people on Ozbargain would still think its too expensive. With $59 plan you are not going to get the same credits bonus as $99, that's just not gonna happen. JB used to offer $59 plan with $500 GC bonus which used to be popular here on Ozb, even then most people still opt to terminate the contract immediately cause its cheaper.

      • That's got nothing to do with it. The core issue is we're sick of being ripped off with expensive mobile plans under the guise of bigger data etc.

They don't need to be so expensive.

Can't blame people trying to get a win on phones, which are also unnecessarily expensive. Particularly iPhones and Galaxy.

  • Still depends on what the contract we sign actually says

Yes, its the end. $200 increase is still good deal for those who are actually looking for upgrading a phone, but for me who have been churning phone every 6 months and make a small profit everytime($100-$200) that's done. Its still early to tell, but if they don't increase the bonus credit, I guess we won't be seeing many people buying Samsung and Pixel phones only to resell in marketplace anymore.

it was good while it lasted

No offence but it’s people like I closing such loopholes. I upgrade every 3 years and many other maybe every 18-24 months and recycling the deal then is fine.
It would be nicer if they just banned churners like yourself (easy to to do with credit checks involved) and leave it as is for less opportunistic people.

  • Wait for Pixel 10 launch and you will see things going back to normal. Yes, $200 more for cancellation but I don't think it will discourage people for long.
I have visited JB recently and I could see the impact of this, not many people at the mobile section any more.
