Best BBQ under $1500

Looking into new barbie, currently considering Weber Genesis base model or Family Q. I have a natural gas setup.

Any suggestions?

Not planning to use it often, maybe just once a week for small family dinner rather than for regular entertaining.

Budget can be stretched but rather not waste for something I rarely use.

I have natural gas also, but not enough to operate a barbie.

I used facebook marketplace. Searched rich suburbs for some over the top outdoor kitchen style setup that got used 2 or 3 times then never again.

Good clean & oil & its good to go. All stainless steel with a grill, flat-plate, wok burner & sink.

    • cant be bothered with the pick up hassle. no ute

Pay someone 2 slabs to do your 'dirty work'.

      • If you're otherwise ok with 2nd hand, don't be dissuaded by the logistics.

        Go look/test 2nd hand bbq's.
Find one you like and pay for it. Take photos.
Explain you'll organise someone to come pick it up.

Airtasker the job, showing what you want transferred and where to/from.

        Easy as.

      • Bunnings ute hire $30….

Stolen BBQ from stalkerbook 1/2 price of new = Win

        • Never done this before.

I would imagine need another person to lift it up.
Plus need to buy some ropes and cover

If not FBMP then low mileage BBQ from the hard rubbish from the verge in an affluent area. Pressure wash (if needed) pocket the $1500 ( less any spares)
Splurge on wagyu and fillet and seafood .

*Don't pfaff around with charcoal bbq's.

  • If not planning to use your natural gas I'd get a Weber performer (charcoal bbq) with gas assist

Gas BBQs are fine and super convenient, but the flavour from charcoal is obviously lost.

What do you mostly cook? Gas or charcoal both have their strengths and weaknesses, and each can be better for certain meat/foods. I have a Weber Genesis for gas and a Kamado Joe classic II for charcoal.

Having worked for a large Sydney council, personally I wouldn’t pick up an old used BBQ from the kerbside.

Out of the 2 options you have mentioned I would go the Genesis over the Family Q. Although, I do think that Weber Genesis BBQs have decreased in quality since 2017 when they started manufacturing them in China. I own the last top of the range Weber Genesis model that was made in the USA that I bought brand new in 2016, it’s still in great condition. Weber do provide great warranty support too, which is another plus for you even though they are made in China now. A light layer of rust started to form on a couple of the burners in my Genesis recently, and Weber Australia sent me out 4 new burners for free. I decided to buy some new heat detectors and flavouriser bars as well, which were starting to wear, those parts aren’t covered for 10 years under warranty like the burners are. I should get another 9-10 years out of my Genesis with those new parts.

My father owns a Ziegler & Brown Turbo Elite 4 Burner stainless steel BBQ with RQT burners, it’s a good BBQ and cost him more than my Weber Genesis cost me, I’ve cooked on both and I still think the Weber Genesis cooks better food.

      nice setup!

how often do you use it? to feed how many?

i like natural gas due to convenience.

Thanks for the compliment Frankensnore. I don’t think I’ve used them this winter even though I have outdoor heating. In the other 3 seasons I use both a minimum of once week, and often several times. I live on my own, I prefer my own space and so does my partner. Some nights it’s just me when BBQ cooking while enjoying a whisky, and other nights my partner comes around for dinner, often there’s left overs. I regularly host BBQs with groups of family and friends.

Stick to a gas BBQ is that’s what you prefer.

    • i like tucker too but they arent cheap

      • Dude, it's just controlled burning of meat. No overthinking, or excess expense, required. Go cheap (see above)
