Tips for EV Owners: Install Charge HQ App

Just found this free app, and wish I knew it earlier.
This app negates the need for CT clamp on your meter/charger.

It allows you to automate charging when there is excess solar only (Tesla PW only I think). No need additional hardware like CT. Need to pay $7pm subscription fee for this.

If your energy plan is wholesale like Amber, you can also automate charging when price is low.

The charger would need to have OCPP, the common EV switch chargers from BYD is compatible.

If you have Home Assistant server, you can connect it to your charger to automate, but I haven’t tried this together with this app.

If your charger is dumb, you can still use the app if your car is Tesla.

If your car is not Tesla, you don’t have Tesla PW, and do not have OCPP charger then this app is useless.

I've got my own frankenstein home assistant solution for this, I poll my Sungrow inverter's export and update the Tesla charging amps / toggle the charger via BLE.

    • I had this working nicely with the Tesla Custom integration. I broke that yesterday by trying to move to the official Tesla Fleet integration :-(

I use Fronius WattPilot charger for that. Talks directly to the inverter and makes the adjustments straight away.

I have home assistant and have integrated EVCC into it which is the local equivalent of ChargeHQ. I pay 2 euros a month for it to support the developers. Works well.
