Garmin Edge 840 Bike Computer $549 (Club Price) Delivered / C&C / in-Store @ 99 Bikes

60

It seems like very reasonable price for Garmin Edge 840.
There are other websites sell this for $548.99 as well.

I think 99 Bikes is a better deal because it can stack with the Woolies Ultimate gift card deal.

    • Thanks I'll check that one out. Just got back into cycling and can't believe the inflation a lot of the gear, especially computers.

      • cycling stuff has gone up but garmin in general have gone up heaps. Most folks these days, unless they really need a head unit, just run watches.

        • Yeah I would get a semi-reasonable discount through work on a Garmin but I still can't justify triple the price. I don't need navigation, just the basics, ended up going with a XOSS G2 plus with sensor and HRM for about $75 from ali

    • Has anyone tried the eBay one? How is it I would love to have one myself :-)

  • Yikes. $549 vs $32.25
Don't forget your phone. Surely it can do some of the features of a bike computer. Yes it can said Bob the cyclist. But Percy said to use python and code it yourself you slacker.

It's good in terms of features and software but the screen is very small and very poor visibility at night. Ok on a bright day. It has that backlit tech which is great for battery savings. At the end, I had to get rid of it - just too hard to read at night.

Hmm this would be a subjective thing. My 830 has the same size and resolution screen as the 840 and I find it fine to read at night. I just manually set the backlight to max.

      • 830 uses different algorithm of the backlight at night. 830 lights brighter the darker it gets. 840 is stupid, on top of the not very legible MIP (memory in pixel) screen, the backlight gets dimmer the darker it gets. You may think they fixed it with firmware, but no, 2 years since its been reported it still worked like it was on day one, so that was the last drop for me.

          • @eug: I tried that, but then it lasts 2 days instead of a week. Plus, IMHO it is just annoying that they could not make it right.
I thought about 1050 - bigger AMOLED screen. But it is a bit too pricey when you have a bundle of a watch + cycling computer, the price of the computer is around the same as the Forerunner 970! So instead I will just get a top of the range watch and try to use it for both cycling and running.

Wow, how many hours do you ride every night?

I guess this is subjective too. It has never even crossed my mind as I set the brightness myself. :)

I find the 1050 too large. I'm waiting for the 850 mainly for a (hopefully) proper speaker as I find the piezo beeps annoying. The AMOLED screen would be nice too.

              • @eug: I don't actually track it that hard… Might be 3 or 1.5 days. I usually ride around 2 hours at night. I just noticed it drop around 5 times or so with the max brightness.
Well duh, it gives you the battery warning once you go past 80% brightness.

    Can this computer run Crysis?

  • For not much more you could put a Legion Go S on the handlebars… Or a laptop…. Not sure how battery life compares 🤣

  • Good computer, I've been using this since 03/2024 with no issues. Don't need a massive screen or extra weight.

Got from the odd spoke eBay for $490.61.

  • I'm a middle aged man who probably should wear glasses and I still manage to read all 10 of the data fields in bright sunlight or at night. Nice compact bike computer but I'd love to help Garmin write a new OS and add some much needed features for people who have multiple bikes and want to track chain/cassette mileage etc.
