Just a note of caution - there are at least two descriptive Reviews written by Steam player(s), that describe the game as having been backed with cryptocurrency, and claim that there are developer plans to (re)introduce NFTs into the game.

The developer(s) responded to these two Negative reviews with the exact same reply:

We’re sorry that your initially positive experience playing Castle of Blackwater has been so negatively impacted by a biased ideology you seem to feel so strongly about. Especially since you gave us no opportunity whatsoever to discuss this topic and changed your review from positive to negative purely on biased assumptions.

For clarity, Castle of Blackwater is a fully enjoyable game that, in full compliance with Steam’s guidelines, has no direct crypto or NFT transactions within it. In fact, players can spend thousands of hours in our game without ever realising that there is an optional web3 component to it.

Players who would like to experience the idea of true digital asset ownership, where they can freely trade cosmetics in a peer-to-peer marketplace with liquid currencies, can CHOOSE to do so at their own pleasure. These transactions occur outside of the Steam ecosystem, yet their NFT assets can still be used in the game, just like any other player who chooses to buy their assets in-game. They’re the same cosmetics, just one is tradeable and the other is not.

Beyond that, there’s no “play-to-earn”, there’s no NFT airdrops, there’s no forced integration whatsoever. We’re just simply giving players a choice of asset ownership.

We understand that other games before us have misused crypto/nft technology to create this stigma that we now have to defend ourselves against, but we would be eager to learn more about how exactly our integration of this tech clashes so strongly with your values as a gamer.

As always, we’re more than happy to continue this discussion in our Discord if you’re willing to keep an open mind.

    • For those who have no real idea about crypto or NFTs (me), what's the deal and how does it affect the player?
