                @tonester: Okay it's time for a rare moment of flexing what happens when I start giving sources:

                U.S. FDA studies show that with even a single application six of these ingredients, oxybenzone, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene, avobenzone and octinoxate, can be absorbed through the skin at levels above 0.5 nanograms per milliliter, the maximum concentration the FDA says may be found in blood without potential safety concerns.

                Of importance, some UV filters were also found in human milk samples. In a cohort study between 2004 and 2006, 54 human milk samples were analyzed; UV filters were detectable in 46 samples and levels were positively correlated with the reported usage of UV filter products [23]. Concentrations of ethylhexyl methoxy cinnamate (EHMC), octocrylene (OC), 4-MBC, homosalate (HMS) and BP-3 ranged 2.10–134.95 ng/g lipid, with EHMC and OC being most prevalent (42 and 36 positive samples, respectively) and an average of 7 positive samples for the other three [23]. In other study, levels of BP-3 in maternal urinary samples taken in gestational weeks 6–30 were positively correlated with the overall weight and head circumference of the baby [24]. These reports rise concerns about potential prenatal exposure and developmental toxicity of UV filters.

                Multiple animal studies have demonstrated that there is
                a disruption of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal sys-
                tem including estrogen, progesterone, and androgenic
                receptors when subjects are exposed to benzophenone
                (i.e., oxybenzone) and cinnamate (i.e., octinoxate) com-
                pounds. Detectable levels of oxybenzone and octinox-
                ate have been found in human urine, serum, and breast
                milk, and it is hypothesized that this is due to sunscreen
                use (Ruszkiewicz et al., 2017). Margaret Schlumpf at the
                University of Zurich detected oxybenzone and four other
                sunscreen filters in Swiss women's breast milk, indicating
                that the developing fetus and newborns may also be ex-
                posed to these substances. Accordingly, in her studies she
                detected at least one sunscreen ingredient in 85% of milk
                samples (Schlumpf et al., 2008, 2010). In addition, vari-
                ous studies have reported statistically significant associa-
                tions between oxybenzone exposure during pregnancy
                and varying birth outcomes. One study reported shorter
                pregnancy length in women gestating male fetuses, two
                studies reported higher birth weights in male neonates,
                and one found lower birth weights in female neonates
                (Ghazipura, McGowan, Arslan, & Hossain, 2017).

                In summary, we argue that there are many reasons why oxybenzone needs to be evaluated for its mutagenicity, carcinogenicity and developmental/reproductive toxicities. It is a chemical that demonstrates a great deal of toxicological impact that creates harm to the environment and to ourselves. It should also be noted that oxybenzone is not the only sunscreen chemical with a significant amount of published toxicological data available. For example, in the toxicological review sent to FDA [3], there are 135+ publications on octinoxate, 90+ publications on octocrylene.

                A recent study demonstrated that women with medium to high levels of oxybenzone in their urine was associated with giving birth to neonates with Hirschsprung’s Disease (HSCR). Testing in human cell lines confirmed that low levels of oxybenzone has the potential to disrupt cell migration and function in a manner similar to what is associated with HSCR.

                A total of 1,635 titles and abstracts were screened and 254 references were evaluated and tabulated in detail, and classified in different categories: i) exposure sources and predictors; ii) human biomonitoring (HBM) exposure levels to perform a meta-analysis; iii) toxicokinetic data in both experimental animals and humans; iv) in vitro and in vivo rodent toxicity studies; and v) human data on effect biomarkers and health outcomes. Our integrative analysis showed that internal peak BP-3 concentrations achieved after a single whole-body application of a commercially available sunscreen (4% w/w) may overlap with concentrations eliciting endocrine disrupting effects in vitro, and with internal concentrations causing in vivo adverse female reproductive effects in rodents that were supported by still limited human data. The adverse effects in rodents included prolonged estrous cycle, altered uterine estrogen receptor gene expression, endometrium hyperplasia and altered proliferation and histology of the mammary gland, while human data indicated menstrual cycle hormonal alterations and increased risk of uterine fibroids and endometriosis. Among the modes of action reported (estrogenic, anti-androgenic, thyroid, etc.), BP-3 and especially BP-1 showed estrogenic activity at human-relevant concentrations, in agreement with the observed alterations in female reproductive endpoints. The meta-analysis of HBM studies identified a higher concern for North Americans, showing urinary BP-3 concentrations on average 10 and 20 times higher than European and Asian populations, respectively.
