Adelphi "The Brisbane" 5 Year Old Whisky 700mL $159.49 + Delivery (Free Delivery with 3 or More Bottles, excl NT) @ Vinomofo

51

Adelphi Brisbane is a delicious whisky and this is a pretty damn good price!

Some ATL prices on whisky and other spirits by the looks of things too. I snapped up the Adelphi Brisbane, as that was almost half price!

Brown Brisbane liquids haven't been too popular lately but this look interesting, can anyone compare it to something similar?

    $160 for a 5yr old Brisbane Whiskey… Nah

    • Its actually Starward (Melbourne)

    • +2

its cask strength adelphi, pretty hard to go wrong

      • Thank you. If people only knew how good the independent bottlers can be!

all g, old mate above pretty obviously isn't into whisky - which is totally fine but probably not the thread to comment on

@harro112: Why not , this is a public forum and everyone has a right to comment in a civilised way, I've expressed my point of view and you have yours. Cheers

@Daddy74: absolutely, you're more than entitled to your opinion and to comment, but it's just not a particularly useful or helpful one - it's not a "Brisbane Whiskey", it's a blend of Starward (Aus), Glen Garioch (Scotland) and Glen Grant (Scotland). You're also insinuating that having an age statement of 5 years is a bad thing, which it's absolutely not at all. Finally you're disregarding it's from Adelphi who are a very well-respected independent bottler, and is great value at this ABV and price.

    • edit: seems it's not Brisbane at all.

I get the underlying sentiment but have you tried?
Anyone tried? If so what did you think?

I went to a spirits expo recently and tried what I thought were some pretty tasty Australian whiskeys. Lots had no age statement at all and on speaking with the reps they'd admit a few years or so. (There were also plenty yucky drinks - especially the rums - pretty rare to find a nice local one).

I've tried it before, loved it. Bought it. At that price, you really can't go wrong.
It's a blend of Australian whisky and scotch, and it's delicious.

Age statements really don't come into to play here, particularly for Australian whisky, which has an accelerated aging process thanks to our climate variation.

Ta. Gonna give it a go. 🍻

@fantombloo: Would love to hear your thoughts when you crack it open.

@Buckshot: Cracked it open with a friend last Saturday and we both instantly liked it. Am gonna have another sip now and remembered to come back here and comment. Surprisingly fruity on top of the tarry and pretty angry bite - a great combo IMO. Glad to have tried it and looking forward to savouring this bottle slowly. (I love these higher %ABV because I find them much more conducive to taking them easy and appreciate slowly.) Thanks for the recommendation. 👍

@fantombloo: How good! I'm glad you both enjoyed it.
I haven't cracked mine yet- I have a few other bottles open on rotation at the moment, but it will be getting opened on the next special occasion.

I tried it at whisky live years ago. Bought a bottle at $300. At this price it's a steal. Was on special a fewonths ago for 175. Bought 2 more then. Might need to get some more…

  • For those of you wondering, here is an excerpt from online (Nicks) about the whisky:

"Due to Scotch Whisky Association laws (SWA), Adelphi are unable to declare the ages of both the Glen Garioch & Glen Grant. The overall depth of this whisky suggests more maturity than the label. The Scottish malts were vatted in England prior to the final composition (consistent with previous Adelphi fusions). Again, this is reportedly due to SWA laws relating to Single Malt Whisky crossing borders in any vessel larger than a one litre.
These costly blending achievements are never easy to execute, so one can appreciate the vision involved in engineering the Brisbane; you’ve got to source high quality, ship it, then understand how to assemble diverse elements, and be pretty damn sure they’re going to work. Risky business, but in the hands of Adelphi’s A-team, two of the industry's best noses have created something akin to a contemporary sherried style: the Aussie influence makes an indelible mark.
Named after Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane, an enterprising soldier and astronomer who left his native Scotland to serve as Governor of New South Wales in 1821, this once-off release is limited to 932 bottles worldwide."
Tasting note: Bright topaz. Sherry sweetness on the nose with mild alcohol prickle. Spiced raisins and hints of banana cake? 3-4 minutes accents dark chocolate and stewed orchard fruits (pears?). Intense, warming, oily whisky. Sweet, spicy fruit cake and bitter chocolate build with a flare of heat and pepper. More dried apricot?…The aftertaste evokes Speyside with muted stone fruits, brandy cream and faint beeswax. A brawny, vibrant blend that easily handles a dash of water, so don't be afraid to experiment. 57.5% Alc./Vol.

Thanks OP for posting up some IBs

    • "3-4 minutes accents dark chocolate and stewed orchard fruits (pears?)."

Does that mean they kept it in their mouth for 3-4 minutes?

      • No, it means they will have sat there and let the finish linger in their mouth.

  • I bought this at the last sale. Tried it this weekend with 2 mates. No-one was impressed, even after watering it down some.
YMMV, but I think there's much better to be had at this price point.

    • wow interesting, what didn't you like about it out of curiosity?

      • Also interested in what you didn't like about it, and what your go-to whiskey is (purely as a reference point, because the Nicks write up above makes this sound right up my alley)…

Yep, distilled just down the street by.. by the river..

Whisky taste is so subjective that it doesn't really matter what others think about it. Some people like peated, some don't, for example. The best way to know if you'll like it or not is to find out what whiskys it tastes similar to and go from there.
