Mazda: Car Insurance from the Dealer?

I'm buying a spec'd Mazda from the dealer. It's been assembled at the factory and is on the ship now.

I've been insured with RACV who've been pretty good for handling claims.
Mazda is also offering insurance for Allianz, which is associated with IAG, who are the real company behind RACV.
I'm reading the terms and conditions and trying to understand the differences and if it covers what RACV does, and checking the prices.

Anyone have any experience with Mazda's Insurance?
Good, bad, things to check or watch out for?

If It's Allianz handling the claims, I guess it's much the same.
There've been experts on OzBargain in the past, who have real insight into insurance and how the claims have worked.

Member since 2007, and still asking this question. STAY AWAY WITH STEALERSHIP

    • But there's also "If it's too good to be true …" and we've debunked that many times on OzBargain.

So I'm actually trying to read through these terms and conditions and check what the differences are.
This is Allianz insurance, so it's possibly the same company backing RACV anyways.

      • Allianz is not associated with RACV.

RAA (SA) is selling its insurance operations to Allianz.

RACV is IAG. IAG is also acquiring RACQ insurance.

If it is an issue of concern to you, Allianz is listed on the UN report of companies profiting from genocide in Gaza through a subsidiary, Pimco, which is a major buyer of the Israeli treasury bonds that have funded the war. Companies that are considered complicit may be held responsible if there is a world court finding of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

  • Good luck!

  • OP likes to burn money

  • Make sure to purchase tinting and definitely get the paint and rust protection from the dealer. You won't regret it.

Looking for comments from people who actually understand the products

    • -3

We get car colour, seat materials from the dealer and a number of other things. So it's a bit arbitrary

Insurance through the dealer from allianz is just like doing it yourself, but the dealer gets a commission on the sale.

Check the price. Make sure you are happy with the PDS.

I got insurance through the dealer for my second last car purchase because it was a good price, but the last car their policy was more than staying with our current insurer.

Very little reason to be brand loyal for insurance. There is good reason to go with a well known insurance company.

    • Thanks, that's what I'm checking. Price looks like it's worth investigating. I want to check if there's a real reason for ruling it out and not just a knee jerk reaction, though I realize reading the Product Disclosure Statement takes a lot of time and effort.

I plan to get a quote from my current insurer too; just seeing if this has any merit

      • +1

You could always ask chatgtp to compare the PDS and prepare a summary table of key differences.

        • Thank you; still getting used to the idea AI can help so much. (as well as skimming the original docs to check it's understood things correctly)

  • +3

They're just going to sell rebranded insurance - just ask for the pds/terms and compare the price to the main ones on Google. Takes 10 mins. Go with whatever you're comfortable with/cheapest

  • It honestly will be quicker and likely cheaper to ring RACV when you know the rego or even the vin and tell them you have a new car and you want it insured.

  • +1

Just buy the insurance yourself. The more people inbetween the more complicated it gets when you need to make a claim.

    • You mean skip RACV or the dealer and try buying it direct off IAG or Allianz? Is that a thing?

      • +1

RACV is not a middleman, it’s brand offered by IAG. IAG has acquired RACV and retained the brand name. There is no insurance product offered under IAG name.

Allianz operates under its own name.

So, you can get your own quotes from these two online or phone and get the quote from the dealer and any other brokers you want to check with, and decide what’s best based on pricing, coverage, and PDS.

This is actually a thing that AI can do reasonably well.

    • Ah, feed it the T&C's and ask for differences? Thanks for that; I'm still coming to terms with how insanely powerful the AI stuff is

      • +1

Yep. I use it for larger commercial insurances. Don't ask it for legal advice but differences it can do pretty well.

Assuming I found the right PDS's

        • Ah, I've been using ChatGPT. It's been pretty good for heaps of things. But I'm going to have to scrutinise this.

It said for both RACV Complete Care Motor Insurance and Mazda Premier Motor Insurance
New for Old Replacement Yes, if within 2 years or 40,000 km

But, the Mazda one starts by saying 3 years replacement

        • So, I questioned the AI on where in the document it was referencing 2 years for Mazda's new for old. I'd found 3 years in 2 locations.

It gave me a location, it did not match. I told it what I found and where and it finally admitted it was using an old document it had instead of the PDF I'd given it … :P ???

        • I asked it to redo the comparison using the documents I asked it to read the first time :S

Mazda’s Premier policy is more generous by default for:

New car replacement (3 years instead of 2)

Included hire car and NCD protection

RACV may be more flexible on repairer choice and offers more modular add-ons (useful if you want to tailor coverage and reduce costs).

Gotta go through and check what it did against the documents

  • Can you share how you linked Allianz and IAG as I cannot see how the are linked. They have both taken over RAxx insurance companies or ceeded control to the other.

    • +1

I think IAG still holds RACV in Victoria but Allianz bought RAA in SA.

      • This is correct (partner works for IAG)

        • Thanks. So no association.

    • It was something I found when I was Googling; thank you for correcting that.

I do my motor vehicle insurance through a broker (along with house and also contents). I have found that a reputable broker will choose an insurance company with a good reputation. It will also have good terms and conditions, and the best value for money, .

    • So you find it cheaper than retail?

  • +1

IAG is not the underwriter for Allianz, they’re different companies.

IAG has only RACV and Rollin insurance brands in Victoria in the retail space as far as I know.

I would advice to do research and compare coverage. I was in similar situation a while ago and did research before taking the delivery of the car. I had already bought RACV from the date of delivery. Went in to Toyota to pickup the car and they gave me a slightly lower quote for exactly same insurance coverage. Bought theirs and cancelled RACV as I was still in cooling off period. Had to do road assist for dead battery once as I was away for a month and it was pretty great. Haven't had to do claims yet, but so far Toyota insurance has been smooth. What are others' experiences with Toyota insurance?

    • Was the road assist through the Toyota branded insurance ?

  • +1

My friend got car insurance through the manufacturer. Policy included new car replacement (‘new for old’) cover for first three years. I think most other insurers it’s only for two years. Car was written off in a relatively minor crash at just under three years and was replaced with a new car. No idea how insurance premium compared.
