Installing Water Softner Vs Water Filtration System

Based in Brisbane, we have encountered some challenges with the local tap water, which appears to be quite harsh. To address this, we have installed a Brita water filter for drinking water, which has proven to be effective. However, the water in the shower remains harsh, causing skin irritation and making hair rough and brittle.

In an attempt to find a solution, I have researched various filtration options, including shower water filters, water softeners, reverse osmosis (RO) systems, and whole water filtration systems. Despite our efforts, we are still uncertain about the most suitable option for our shower needs.

Given the significant financial investment associated with a whole water filtration system, we are considering whether it would be the most cost-effective solution. If anyone has installed any of the aforementioned filtration systems and could provide feedback on their effectiveness, we would be grateful for your insights.

Yeah it's all bullsh#t buy a TDS meter run your test through the $$$$$ spent on your new filter system and surprise the readings are the same.
R.O water will clean to around 5-8 TDS but then you still have chlorine and fluorides if I remember right.
The amount of calcium/minerals in brisbane water is a joke, just rinsing a glass and wait for the white spots of powder to appear when drying, it's almost like council want heavy minerals in the water to keep everyone stupid.
Brisbane 240 TDS my meter reads on average but has gone past 300, undrinkable dangerous is 500, Gold Coast used to be around 80-120.

If you look into it rather than go borderline conspiracy. The hardness is due to naturally occuring calcium and magnesium and calcium present in the environment (mainly due to the large amounts of limestone in the region). They could reduce this number, but then your water bill would skyrocket and then everyone would complain.

You say naturally occuring, I say planted by Satan or possibly aliens! You just don't have the mind for conspiracies.

We have installed the whole house filter system and I highly recommend it. It’s chunky investment but 100% worth it. I am based in Brisbane south east. Water quality is so much better now. If you have any specific questions dm me. Let me know if you would like me to introduce you to our rep. Cheers

Harsh or hard? Get it tested in a lab.
Councils pride themselves supplying water with low turbidity. This means clear looking.
Since chlorine is harsh, adding industrial vitamin C for extra sanitation what is ascorbic acid, they neutralise it with cheap lime to save their gear.
R/O is slow, the slower the cleaner but good for drinking. Many pubs use it for their free water.
My sister lives in a luxury apartment that has a softening unit but it is not connected to the kitchen tap. Great for keeping the shower glass cleaner, using less soap to shower and prolongs the life of the toilet by far. It works by splitting salt. If you make coffee with it it tastes terrible, hence the kitchen tap being bypassed but their dishwasher hardly uses any salt.
Try your earthwater for the shower after having your skin analysed.

Hi op, I've got a whole house water system, very happy with it. I'd recommend to give PSI Water Filters a call for some advice to meet your requirements and budget.
Assuming you aren't renting and plan on staying, a whole house system will cost more upfront but economical to run, will do every tap in the house, you can ditch your Brita water filter, and you can change the filters annually yourself, something like:

If you were renting or wanted something cheaper upfront you could just get a shower filter:

Hi cost would depend on which unit and options you choose, PSI Water Filters only supply the unit, you'd need to get a quote from a few plumbers for the install, it goes on the cold water line before it enters your property (pick a good spot).
Options wise, I've got the optional pressure gauges, that way you can see water pressure coming in and after each stage of the filter in case there is an issue.
There are different type of carbon depending what you want to filter out, they can talk you through the options.
Apparently Brisbane uses Chloramine in their water, so you'd probably need the Chloramine rated carbon option.
The unit I posted with optional pressure gauges and chlormaine rated carbon is $790.
The filter housings wear out eventually so I'd recommend the genuine Pentek (big white) over the Taiwanese copy (big blue), 5yr vs 3yr warranty.
Depending where it is installed, you might also want to consider shading it to make it last longer, either a box or shadecloth.
I've had mine for 11 years, filters need to be replaced annually, around $120/yr. Sediment filter you replace, Carbon filter is refillable so you're just buying the carbon.
I'd give them a call then you can narrow down what you want and what it would cost (upfront & ongoing), get your install quote, then you'll have a good idea of overall cost.
