  • reads hair density 500 times per second.

    Really though?

    • +2

      Reads 500 times per sec, then procrastinates until battery runs out

    • Probably just measures resistance at multiple points.

  • interested as my razor is on last legs. Looking at the models do ppl feel this'd be worth getting (rather than the 5000 series for $159…. wasn't sure if things like bluetoothing to an app a bit gimmicky? and if the cleaning pod contraption worthwhile [as opposed to just rinsing under tap]??)

    • I have been looking at a new shaver. The 5/7 have the same head on them and more or less the same.

      The 9 has a different head. That's about the main difference. Don't need Bluetooth to tell me the shaver is running

      • I have this one, have had a few different brands in the past but it's the best shaver I have owned. Battery lasts a while too. Be sure to confirm, but I believe the 9000 series is made in the NL

    Will this be a good shaver for dad who shaves every day with a Gillette razor?

    Want to make shaving easier for him. Please advise if there are any better options for a 70 yo

      ymmv but maybe a nice safety razor from feather or something? he probably has 50+ years experience with the same format so why
      change it unless he’s starting to struggle with dexterity. An older friend of mine complains about maintenance and having to replace shaver heads with electric razors, too

        Replacing a shaver's blades every few years (Philips recommends every 2 years, but I have usually used mine for around 4 years - perhaps the Braun foil-style shavers don't last as long - I do know that they need lubricated frequently) is really not a big deal - especially when you consider the cost of razor blades now.

        With the Philips rotary shavers there really isn't any maintenance, but the foil ones need regular lubrication. Just blow the hair out after shaving, or rinse under the tap, and if you have the cleaning pod, do that (it takes around 1 minute) every month or two.

          Is that with daily use? Phillips says every 12 months on a 1-3 day beard:
          https://www.documents.philips.com/assets/20220425/1b3f717885…
          My friend definitely put me off these having to replace his after a few months of daily use

          • @ehhh: I do shave daily. These are the SH91 blades in the listed shaver (the link you attached is for the older SH90 blades);

            https://www.philips.com.au/c-p/SH91_51/shaver-series-9000-an…

            And considering Philips will ALWAYS advise replacing them more frequently than strictly necessary, I take the 24 months as the most frequent you would ever want to do it. In my experience if it was still shaving OK, then no need to replace. TBH I have barely noticed a difference when I replaced them, even after 4 years.

            As for your friend - either;

            • He has a very hard beard
            • He is doing something wrong, or, more likely;
            • He has bought fake blades, and is getting poor performance and life out of them.

            There is literally thousands of sellers offering completely fake blades - sold as "For Philips" (not even pretending to be Philips) - they are typically around $25-40 a set. There is also a smaller number of sellers (including Amazon - when you read the reviews) selling what appears to be genuine Philips blades, in a Philips marked box - typically around $60-75, and then the actual genuine Philips blades typically for around $100.

            I bought a set of "Genuine" Philips blades, sold by a reputable (99.7% feedback) eBay seller last year for $65. There were advertised as Genuine, and arrived in a decent looking Philips box. When I opened them up and compared them to my older Philips blades - BIG difference. They had 2/3rds of the number of cutting edges on each row, and the cutting edges were straight and cheap looking. The blades "guards" were also different. The genuine Philips blades have cutting edges that are V-shaped, not straight. The fake blades don't cut as well, tend to rip hairs out, and get blunt pretty quickly.

            I took photos and challenged the eBay seller - he obviously knew because he refunded in full immediately and didn't want the blades back.

            Ask your friend to show you his blades and compare them to photos of the genuine ones - my guess is that you will count less cutting edges and the edges will be straight, not V-shaped.

  • that's a really good price compairing to the shavershop

  • Is it worth upgrading from S7783/50?

    I recently bought a Philips/Norelco i9000 Prestige (XP9901/88) kit with case, USB charging cable, cleaning pod, beard shaver and ear/nose trimmer for $392 on an early Prime Day sale (it came from US), and I am very happy with it.

    It replaced my 7yo Philips 9711 and the new one shaves in half the time and a single charge should last about 4 weeks I think (only 2 weeks in at 59% remaining). AFAIK the head on the i9000 Prestige is slightly different to this older model 9000, but the blades are the same, so the shave on this one should be the same.

    • Do you know how the head is different? Comfort or cutting ability changed? From my reading the 5/7 are the same head but slight differences in the body

      • This is the best guide I have found for recent/current Philips shavers - it explains the differences between the very latest and previous gen heads - not much, but they are slightly thinner near the edges to get a bit closer around the nose etc.

        https://shavercheck.com/philips-shavers-guide/

      • Head on the new one has smaller "petals" but the same size of the actual blades. So the bit that doesn't cut but gets in the way is smaller. Apparently the new heads can just be moved onto the old 9000 model if you need this.

    Hmm why thry dont make one with usb c charging port?

    • +1

      You can buy an adapter - just like a Lightning to USB-C, but it's "Philips shaver" to USB-C. Then you can use any cable you want.
      I have seen them on Amazon. Presume AliExpress etc would also have them.

    • Yes, that was a major missed opportunity.

      The new Philips USB cable also has a different end (shaver end) to those found on the Philips shavers that still use a Philips supplied charger, so if there is an adapter, it needs to fit the new style (and have the correct voltage - there seems to be many reports of them not working, or even overheating the shaver), not the older style.

  • It's worth mention that the i9000 (Amazon exclusive version, with charging stand and nose hair trimmer but without the cleaning pod) was $260 in a Prime day sale recently. I ordered it and they lost my order going through customs. Paying $20 more for an older version hurts.
