Looking for a New Projector - Any Recommendations?

We inherited a projector when we bought the house.

The projector is now broken, 3 lights on the front, and the end ones stay red with the middle one flashing orange. I've tried replacing the lamp but still the same issue.

So I'm basically looking for a replacement that gives me what I had for a reasonable price, does anybody have any recommendations?

  • but that is kinda out of budget really from what I've seen.

    So what’s the budget?

    • Given that what I had must be pretty low spec now I'd think could get a replacement for less than $2k? Maybe even $1k?

      • Less than $2k for sure. Suggest you find some deals on recent models and look at YouTube reviews, who can show you what the image will be like.

Are you sure the filters aren't blocked and it's just overheating? Should buy a new one anyway, you'll get a much better picture and cool features like screen edge detection, portability, HDR, 4K, decent upscaling, all the good stuff you'd want these days.

    • I've unplugged and left for days but it flashes as soon as you plug it back in and turn on. Can't find anything online other than replace the lamp, which hasn't worked

If the quality is worth your time, I'd be researching long into the night, to see if I can find the fix for the dead projector.
Unless it's a known lemon, of course

OP's projector is 1080p, not worth fixing imo

If the repair cost wasn't too bad, though,(and that's the key) I'd rather have a cinema quality 1080p projector and worry about and upgrade later, as prices fall on newer tech. You could buzz through lot of quality 1080 in the interim

Yeah true, though could be a sunk cost fallacy as OP has already had to buy a new bulb for it and 4K projectors aren't that expensive these days (though not sure how the contrast compares, though the contrast could've been getting shitty with the age of the projector anyway)

          (and I didn't neg you)

  • For that budget, the only above average option is an Epson EH-TW7100, about 2k

  • Bought a HY320 1080I for about $100 off Ali, it was surprisingly good until I fell asleep on the remote and woke up with screen burnt in, ran plex and VPN with Pluto no probems.
I replaced it with the Mini HY320 720 absolute garbage can't run apps without crashing and the screen brightness is bad enough to not want to use it.

  • Maybe you could look into repairing it.

Maybe. I'm sure in amongst the links above, there's another link to a "how to", or info on the fix.(YT?) It involves a circuit board or repairing of it.. Those parts prices have likely dropped by now, so it could be worth researching it properly for a cpl days and then decide. You might be able to pay an electronics guy to install the board or component. Ask around at a Jaycar store on who the local repair dudes are. You might be able to face to face with one of them and get a free quote or rough idea of a fix.

I got Xgimi Horizon Pro 3 years back. Still going strong. There are newer version available now. You may check it out.

I highly recommend the Epson eh-tw9400 - Given you are coming from a JVC cinema projector I think it's worth looking at other cinema projectors even though it streches the budget a bit… I got one last year and it has fantastic picture quality and no DLP issues - about $3,500 with sales, it's also very quiet, similar physical size to the JVC
