Overnight Transit at Melbourne Airport

Hi all, just needed to advice.

We will be flying in from Auckland at 11:00pm Melbourne time and our next flight is at 08:30am (international). They are two seperate flights so we need to collect our bags and check in for our next flight when the counter opens in the morning.

I am assuming, collecting luggage, clearing immigration would take an hour (hopefully) so we should be out by 12am and our next flight check in would be at 05:30am. so essentially about 5 hours before we can go to a lounge

Is it possible to stay overnight at the airport? I have seen posts online which say melbourne is not really transit friendly, especially on landside. We wont be able to access the lounges as all of them are airside and we cant clear security until we check in for our next flight.

So just wanted to know what our options are and what you all would advice.

Thanks

    airport is basically closed overnight

    • Including all the lounges, as far as I remember. Can't even just hang out and get pissed all night then sleep it off on the plane.

Ouch that sounds tiring and messy

Book at room at the Park Royal.

Yes there are a few hotels just outside the airport. Park Royal, Holiday Inn, Novotel, ibis. All within walking distance, but Park Royal is directly connected to T2.

If you just want to hang around the terminal then that's fine. The international terminal is very busy up until 2am from the midnight arrivals. Then there's an Emirates A380 leaving at 5.15am so plenty of people will be checking in for that from 2.15am.

Otherwise there are 5 hotels within walking distance.

    • Is there enough seating/comfortable seating around to kill5 hours?

I wouldn't say there's plenty of seating especially since you will be competing with other people doing the same thing but I think you'll be able to find a spot somewhere within the 4 terminals.

      • Airside or land side ? Land side not that much actually. At that time you'll be fine finding a seat, but they all have arms so you can't lie down and they're not comfortable at all.

Park Royal is really good as its connected to the airport and is a really nice hotel. If you call for a price I think they give a cheaper rate if you are a trainsit passenger.

Have a look at the options online. It looks like there might be a McDonalds and a Pickets Deli and Rotisserie that is open 24 hours.

There are also showers in T2 but I can’t figure out if they are open 24 hrs. You need to bring your own towel.

Probably best to look at the airport website.

Back when I was a broke student I stayed at the airport overnight. It was an absolutely shit experience. Now that I'm nearing 30yo IMO the money you'd pay for a budget hotel room is well worth the comfort even if only for a few hours.

    • Agree to this.

Park Royal. You will have a shit time in the terminal and thus a shit flight subsequent.

  • Hotel sounds best, if it doesn't eat into whatever savings you got by booking separate flights, and as long as you don't fall asleep and not wake up in time.

    • booked seperate flights because they re two different airlines, if i book with the same airline, i have a 18 hour stop in melbourne

  • Another vote for the park royal
