The mixed bag used to have lobsters, but not anymore..

    • I think that’s the KickinLicious bag

I've never heard of this place before. Is it just a seafood restaurant and this deal is some sort of group platter?

Is it any good (both the deal and the restaurant)?

    • +7

They’re a seafood chain with about 18 restaurants that, in my memory, had explosive growth since COVID due to table theatrics and social media marketing.

The gimmick with the boiled seafood bags is you sit with your party wearing aprons and rubber gloves, then they empty a massive plastic bag of seafood onto the table and you eat caveman style.

I’ve always been aware of them and this deal has convinced me to at least try, though I expect the experience will be average. Hopefully the sauces are nice - they have cajun, garlic butter, peppery or a mix of all of them, then you choose the spice level separately.

Anyone got recommendations for the sauce?

      • Wonder if they let share the bag between 2 for very light meal

        • They do, it’s for sharing :)

          • +1

@kc7: Thanks! Just saw the photo looks like a decent pile of food. Do you have to book?

            • @ATTS: Absolutely, yes. Here's the page: https://www.kickininn.com.au/make-a-booking/

Choose your venue and go through the motions. Went with two friends last week and enjoyed ourselves a lot. Tried the Garlic Kajun mild. I would go spicy next time.

If you sign up to the mailing list you can get a $58 prawn cocktail free when visiting in your birthday month. They send you a link and you book it in advance. Free prawns!

              • +1

@JownehFixIT: Thought that was a prawn Flavored cocktail for a minute and balked at the price XD

              • +1

@JownehFixIT: Thanks, free 58$ cocktail seems even more enticing

Even though other users mentioned frozen overseas quality

                • @ATTS: Yeah look, we've only been twice to the Strathpine store, and didn't notice that at all. I could be a less discerning customer than they are, to be fair. I didn't get any kind of frozen fishy vibe from the mixed bag. There's definitely a joke in here about it being a mixed bag though :D

      • They are tasty, and the food is decent. Just order hotter than you normally would.

      • +7

Peppery is the only sauce that will mask the reheated frozen taste of the seafood they use.

  • +1

FYI - They sell their sauces by itself. Just buy the sauce and cover your own woolies cooked prawns with it, like a true ozbargainer.

    • +1

Or even better you can save the money by getting the seasonings from Costco and making the sauce yourself!

  • +17

Poor quality seafood disguised by cajun sauce

You could tell the everything has been frozen for a long time

    • +1

agree, we tried to recently, the seafood was rather average and the sauces just overpower what little flavour their is. Seems to be a knockoff of Red Lobster and other similar ones from overseas but not done as well.

      • +2

The whole seafood in a bag is a gimmick as well

        • yep just copying what Red Lobster does in the US.

          • @gromit: Issue with western way of cooking shellfish is that usually it's boiled and has no flavour and requires sauce to accompany. Other than that there is no taste.

      • +1

Yep agree. Last time we went the crab and prawns were almost off. None of it was fresh

  • +1

Great joint, good offer. Had this same offer for years time to time. Gotta go try again.

  • +8

Looks like a decent offer but for what its worth, I reckon at least the Perth CBD location engages in purchasing/creating fake reviews on Google Maps. Sort through the 'Newest' reviews and you'll get what I mean.

Furthermore, it has 7,500 reviews. Hard to believe for a location that just opened late January 2024. For comparison, Crown Casino Perth has 7,600 reviews on Maps.

  • Only Monday and Tuesday?

  • +3

Can confirm it’s all low quality frozen seafood sourced from Asian countries that is drenched in sickly sauce. If you love seafood this might put you off for a while

    • Thanks saved me a trip of disappointment

Btw howd u find out it was imported frozen seafood

  • +12

I don't know about the other locations, but the Gold Coast branch is serving what they call "Frozen Fresh" products. If you can't take the heat and can't eat spicy then you will notice the taste of the frozen part of the seafood. If you love spicy, it is drenched in sauce so you can event tell the difference.

Also, the table is covered by a paper sheet, so within 5 minutes the food sauce has melted away the paper, so make sure they wipe the table down before you get the order as you will be tasting it too.

Tip: dont sit outside, this re reheated food gets cold fast, and the pips especially smell awful when they get cold.

Its good value for money, but if you love fresh seafood, this is not the place for you. When I was paying, I was offered 20% off the next time if I leave a positive review for them. So that is why the reviews are glowing.

      More like frozen shit

For this price, if you're in Sydney, might as well go to Crown's Epicurean. Pay slightly more, you get fresher seafood and much much more selection.

    • +1

      Is Epicurean any good?

      After watching this

      https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSHpELJBYm6no-LOacx/

      Kind of turned off

      • I've been there 3 times and I never had any issues. The seafood were fresh and overall food was good. But I haven't been there for a year now so not sure if they have gone downhill but the times I've been there no complaints.

        • What would be 3 top most expensive items there?

          • -1

            @Poor Ass: Crab, octopus, mussles

            • -2

@freeb1e4me: That's probably why ya not a paying customer

              Minimum oyster, bugs and crab

              • +2

@Poor Ass: There are no “oyster” and “bugs” on the list.

So why are you asking a question when you think you already know the answer? I guess that’s why you are a paying customer because you have no clue what you’re eating

                • -2

@freeb1e4me: Bullshit there are no oysters the video shows oysters and oysters are usually staple for seafood buffet

Y you replying with wrong information

                    • -2

@freeb1e4me: You learn to read yourself

Can't you SEE runamuck and I were having a conversation about Epicurean not the mix bag… no one asked you

                      • -1

@Poor Ass: How these threads work is that anyone can jump in. If you want a 1v1 then take it to private chat. Still, very weird you asking a question if already “knowing” the answer.

                        • -1

@freeb1e4me: no one can stop you but no one asked you either

issue is you missed the context and accused me of not reading while now you have to eat humble pie

                          • -1

@Poor Ass: No one asked you to reply but you keep doing it. The pie is all yours

          • @Poor Ass: There were Balmain bugs, oysters and Sashimi (Salmon, Tuna and Kingfish). They had crabs and lobster legs too but not meaty.

    • Pay slightly more

This $99 bag is not meant for 1 person lol

      • +1

I know but in the bag are just cheap frozen seafood. You get what you pay for.

  • Been many times. Its about a 7/10 in my books. At $99 i can just begin to see the value, otherwise I would rather make it at home.

  • Have to agree with others that its not fresh seafood and tasteless. Not a deal in my eyes. Save your money and go elsewhere.

  • +1

I remember when they first started getting big a bunch of posts on social media showing how crazy undersize the crabs etc were, looks like they're at least a bit bigger now.

    • If I'd known how tiny the crabs were (half the size of the palm of someone's hand!), I wouldn't even have bothered with the $99 special! Would have preferred to pay full price elsewhere to eat crabs!

      • Wow, still doing it? Not great for the crab population and not great for people wanting to actually get some crab meat heh

  • Don’t know what happens in other cities, but here in Perth’s north, I walk past this place virtually every day. Since it opened 12 months ago, it’s always been dead and empty. I’d be worried about freshness since there may be days without ANY orders. Bizarrely, it is situated in a busy thoroughfare right next door to a real fresh seafood supplier where you can buy juicy WA seafood and sauces for far less. I don’t think Australia is ready yet for $99 slops-in-bag, rubber gloves dining experience.

  • +1

I went to one in Highett VIC a couple of years back when they had an AYCE promo. For the price I paid, I wasn't expecting top quality seafood anyway, so I'd say it was worth it considering the amount of food I put away. lol

So you gotta go with the mindset of value for money. If you walk into this thinking you're going to get fresh high quality seafood, you'll be leaving disappointed.
