Bulova Jet Star 96B415 - Hi-Beat 262kHz Quartz, Sapphire $349 ($324 w/ Signup Bonus) Delivered @ Starbuy

260

Equal ATL as the last deal in March. I can't rave enough about these watches, they're amazing for what they offer at a really attractive price point. Something I've never highlighted before is the bracelet - it's one of the most comfortable S/S bracelets that I own, conforming nicely to my wrist and not digging in at all. It has good articulation and there's two half-links which can be used when resizing.

In B4: no, it's not that Jetstar - these Jet Stars actually run on time, every time.

If you prefer to shop elsewhere the only places I can easily find are Watson's Jewellers and Scarce Co. Ask for a price match before purchasing.

    Great looking watch

  • This one is a little drab, although mathing the price for the strap models is good.

I've come back around to the king retro 97B214 when it comes back around on sale - I realise it was only a month ago.

    • Bulova has had some pretty good designs over the last 20 years but yeah their current offerings are pretty uninspired.

And wtf is with the Accutron's pricing, jesus…

  • +4

there's two half-links which can be used when resizing

    Underrated feature for real

    • +1

      Mine arrived with only one.
(Pic on the linked deal also shows only one)

  • Do we have some ideas on how long the batteries in these last?

    • +1

      Plan on about 2 - 2.5 years.

    • +1

Probably 2-3 years, but best to change regularly, say every 2 years.

  • These 262kHz quartz movements seem to have a life span of around 12 years, other quartz movements last much longer.

While getting 12 years out of a consumer product doesn't sound too bad, but if you have multiple watches and don't wear it everyday, then usage is limited.

Not sure if you are expected to stop a quartz watch to minimise "wear and tear". Probably makes zero difference to battery as it needs to be changed every couple of years anyway.

Automatic watches are best kept in a winder to let them run.

    • +1

I would have thought letting an automatic run constantly will increase wear and tear and will require more frequent servicing.

      • +1

We too, but was told keep it running will help distribute lubricants. I originally thought using watch winder only to keep the time.

The trick is to just have 1 or 2 watches for your needs and to refrain from hyper consumption of what is essentially a tool.

If you have so many watches that you couldn’t find enough time to wear one of them over the span ofTWELVE YEARS, then you have a problem.

      • +3

        Tool is a bit generous
        Jewellery more like

        • I regularly keep my phone off of me because I don’t want the distraction of it and hate the act of digging a phone out of my pocket just to know the time, on top of that I don’t want to be dependent on a phone that’ll go flat in a day to tell the time.

To that end, my G-shock is absolutely a tool that I use every day.

          • +1

@chepsk8: I totally agree with this sentiment, the trouble I have is it's so darn tempting to want to own the entire set of tools instead of just one or two essentials.

      • +2

        I have multiple problems.

      • I bought a Precisionist Champlain for bad, it was his good watch and he only worn it on special occasions, may be once or twice a month.

He liked the watch a lot, and he was extremely disappointed when the hour and minute hands went out of sync.

Bulova (Citizen) quoted $300 to repair it, basically to swap out the movement. Considering the entire watch was only $260 (from Catch), it didn't make sense to spend more than that to repair it.

To him it felt like he got less than "one year" use of the watch.

I can't rave enough about these watches, they're amazing for what they offer

    They tell the time?

    • +1

They do! Very accurately, at that, and have a sweeping seconds hand that looks like an automatic watch. Also, the construction is top-notch with sapphire crystal (good scratch resistance), a very nicely done dial, and I've already mentioned the bracelet. These are all something you'd expect to see in a much more expensive watch.

      • Tbh an automatic watch generally has 6hz (or 10hz if hibeat). These bulovas have 15hz which is as high as it gets without being a grand Seiko spring drive.

If smoothness and accuracy is what you're after, bulovas are bang for buck.

        • I think you meant 6 ticks per second (3Hz). 1 Hz = 2 ticks per second. This Bulova has 16 ticks per second.

  • Shoutout to the Super Seville series as well.

    • so sad gold got axed

      • +1

Oh no!! And you waited so patiently for the price to drop, too!

        • +1

Ah it’s ok, there will always be something better on horizon. GS white birch maybe? Hah
Or maybe I’ll just get the chronos homage.

  • I have the gold and burgundy model. Beautifully finished for the price point and that smooth second hand sweep is pretty impressive. Definitely worth it at this price point.

  • Great price, reckon I will buy a couple at this price and store them in the dresser drawers, just in case.

  • Thought id get involved cheers boys, hoping 40mm is good on the wrist, wanted a full metal band to replace my old Movado

    • It will look good on you!

      • Any tips on resizing? just got it, but slightly big, do i just go to a mall and find a place or what (am noob) am based in sydney homebush!

        also ty looks nice!

        • If you haven't got an appropriate tool then you're better off going to a jeweller. It'll cost you a bit (I paid $25 the last time needed help with the same thing) but at least you'll know it'll be done properly and they won't scratch the bracelet. Also, ensure you get the links back.

          • @Chazzozz: tyvm so just any jeweler at a mall etc should be gucci?

            • @blinkybro: I'd say any jeweller who sells watches - just ask them if they can do it and how much. Feel free to shop around, no sense taking the first offer.
