Not as good as WD sn850x 8tb - wait till that goes on sale, and use some Amazon vouchers - I picked an 8tb SN850x for 941.16 with 270 of vouchers (free from doing surveys) - final cost 671.16 It works a treat in a USB4 enclosure

What surveys give that much amazon vouchers?

Yes, it's possible to get Amazon vouchers by completing online surveys. Several platforms like Branded Surveys, Survey Junkie, and InboxDollars allow users to earn points or cash that can be redeemed for Amazon gift cards

      670 is a excellent price for the 8TB SN850X.

The NM790 in this listing is much, much faster in sustained writes (~2.16x) though, something that may be important for a drive this big.

The SN850X slows down to ~1200mb/s in direct write mode due to the lower-end Kioxia 162L BiSC6 TLC flash being used (https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Ud2kjRNas99TNbW5Uez4wK.png)

Whereas the NM790 using 232L YMTC TLC only throttles to ~2600mb/s, more than double the speed. (https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/cPd9dv25SmnDxy6jUirjVf.png),

4TB in shown in the NM790 graph due to the 8TB model being too new, but the 8TB uses using the same flash configuration with a larger SLC buffer to hold peak speed for more of the drive, the initial 7000mb/s burst duration on both are comparable.

Note the more of the drive you fill, the less SLC is avaliable for caching (yes, it's counted as part of the storage and stuff is permanently saved there, making it inaccessible as cache) and the more often you will experience the much lower direct write speeds in actual use.

I'd personally take the NM790 for 200 extra, maybe if the sn850x was using midrange Micron B47R 176L (~1800mb/s direct) or something newer that didn't throttle all the way down to 1200 I would consider it.

They weren't free. They cost you time, doing surveys. Some of us call that a job.

Back in 2015, a decade ago, I was expecting 100TB SSD's to be around $500, that's how fast the solid state storage industry was moving and innovating. Here we are in 2025, 8TB SSD for $900 lol.

When I was growing up, the future was flying cars, cars that could time travel and we'd have replicants living off world doing jobs humans hate.. we'd also have robots from the future sent to kill the mother of unborn babies.. but here we are.. GPUs costing the price of a used car …

      • Im donating a kidney for an RTX6000 96gb… Id get two but they frown at that ;-)

  • Are these more reliable long term cold storage than a HDD?

    • No moving parts. Generally, yes

    • +3

Most solid state/NVME requires electricity to retain data. So I would think twice for "long term" storage.

  • Doesn't seem to auto apply anything for me. Expired?

    • yeah seems it’s expired.

  • Wow 8TB on an SSD - what a age we live in!
