Seiko 5 SRPJ97K Supercars Sports Collab - $349 ($324 w/ Signup Bonus) Delivered @ Watch Depot

130

For something a bit different I thought I'd put up a Watch Depot deal for today. This Seiko 5 is one that I actually kinda like. Normally I'm not a fan of the styling but this one has a cool textured dial that reminds you of carbon fibre, and with the white hands & indexes the legibility will be excellent. It also comes in a special presentation box which is waiting for you to promptly put in the cupboard and never see it again until you want to sell or give away the watch. Specs are solid if unexciting, however note that it has 22mm lugs so keep that in mind when you're browsing for alternatives.

Watch Deport have a $25 bonus for signing up to their email (popup on the front page or a slide-out in the bottom RH corner of most other pages), and unlike our other favourite watch store the WD coupon arrives in your inbox almost immediately.

I'm not sure when their Daily Deal expires so I'll say till midnight today, but check back if you're keen and you might see it won't expire until tomorrow.

Still active as at 8:30am on Saturday (kudos to miwahni for the tip in the comments) so I’ll un-expire it and keep checking later.

    • Seiko 5 Sports 110th Anniversary watches are actually really cool collectibles. I got the Ultraman and other ones and they're all pretty cheap comparatively. That said, the standard Sports? Yeah nah. 4R36 lol.

I don't have an issue with the movement. More the market direction they decided to take with those watches. They had an incredibly popular watch, great value with a cult following (the SKX) and they discontinued it and replaced it the Seiko 5 Sports (which was a specification downgrade in every category). It's why SKX's are still worth a fortune second hand. The fact that they feel and look extremely cheap in hand is a consequence.

You get much nicer watches out of Citizen and Orient at the same price point. I paid less than this deal for a Citizen Fugu (which is on my wrist right now), and it looks and feels infinitely nicer than the 2 Seiko 5 Sports I have.

I'm assuming I copped this avalanche of downvotes from people who just don't know any better……

          First time?

          • @marshmall0w2: Haha not the first. But I don't usually expect it from watch people lol

The SKX007 / 009 were great at the time for $260 or less, a rugged simple diver. It has been labelled iconic however I would never pay $400-600 for one now. 7S26 Movement was a good workhorse but nothing special (lacks hand-winding and hacking). The 4R35 is better & longer power reserve. Still mineral crystal and tough rubber strap. It's the simplicity of the dial people like.

Other than that you're only missing the 200m WR and screw down crown. Not everyone will even wear them in the water let alone diving. I do think they should have released a new version true to form and they would sell like hot cakes.

I've never even really liked the Seiko 5 case and there are far too many variants and releases but don't mind some of the vintage re-releases. Fun, they wear pretty well with a pop of colour. I got the orange hurricane one for $285.

@G-Shock: The SKX was a proper dive watch. And they replaced it with a newer model STYLED as a dive watch, but took away the key features of a dive watch. I'm guessing, but I'd say it was done in the name of differentiating the product stack better, since it has made the divide between the Seiko 5 Sports and the Prospex line much greater.

@ASR-Briggs: Yes they probably want you to buy a prospex for divers. Plenty to choose from. The Seiko 5s are pretty good everyday watch with entry level prices (on sale). Even if they made a new SKX it would cost too much and similar to prospex. One day they may do. I prefer the case of other models anyway (slim, mini, king /turtle in that order, then you got sumo, tuna, samurai etc).

              • @G-Shock: Yeah I have a Samurai (which is one of my favourites and gets a lot of wrist time) and one of the land edition Tortoises.

        • Orient have no guaranteed WR rating. Agree with the rest of your points though. But that for me puts them among the chinese tier, cheap, great value, no identifiable difference between them and good quality watches, but will always be known as a cheaper brand

FWIW i daily an addiesdive (IWC pilot knockoff) and very happy with it

@Human Bean: My orient divers at least have a screw down crown. Which gives me way more confidence to take them underwater than the Seiko.

i have this watch. its super nice. the strap is trash though. recommend testing a bunch of straps on it to find the right fit. its big and heavy so need something solid.

  • +1 for the comment about the box
    :)

  • Deal has been marked as expired but it's 1.19am and I can still see it at $ 349.

    • Thanks for confirming. I don’t know when their daily deals expire so I had to assume it was midnight on the same day. I’ll check back at 10am, which is when SB deals change over (except weekends, they go from Friday to Monday 10am).
