i've learnt that for beginner, shopping for a second hand complete set on marketplace can be quite cheap for a decent set.
How beginner?
I'd say no. Generally when clubs are listed as 'players' indicates low handicap. I would say they are a set that wont be forgiving to begin with but will be a set that you grow with and wont have to replace as you get better.
'Ideal for handicaps between 5-20' from the site
these aren't player irons. i play with mizuno blades, and these kirkland clubs are forgiving rocket launchers. it doesn't have as much offset as a super game improvement club, but does have offset. you will gain a lot of distance with these, hopefully down the fairway instead of deeper out of bounds, lol.
Players irons generally refers to loft.
partially correct, but yes loft is part of it. smaller heads, less offset, usually forged, etc…
anyways these are not player iron lofted, these are juiced.
i play real player irons, my mizuno blade 4 iron is 24 degrees
kirkland 4 iron is 20 degrees,
5 iron 23 degrees
kirkland irons are already 2 clubs up on me, lol.
so you are actually hitting a 2 iron.
Nope, get a second hand set
nah - as per the ad
Ideal for handicaps between 5-20
Even though they're designed for low-mid handicapper you could still play them fine as a beginner. In my opinion fitted or game improvement clubs won't make anywhere near as much difference for a beginner as much as practice. These are a bargain compared to other new clubs by any other brand in the same league for build and quality.
if you have money to waste, then go for it. you will grow with it.
if you are a beginner just buy the cheapest stuff you can buy 2nd hand.
most will quit the game so don't need to invest a lot as a beginner until you really really like it and stick with it.
Aren't these the design that Taylormade sued them over?
Twas the wedges i believe, And from memory kirkland won
Lawsuit was on these irons in comparison to the P790s… Think it's still ongoing.
They look exactly the same. Bargain if they perform anywhere near the same.
@Hypnotoad: yes, they perform close to it. i think costco will win the lawsuit as it is very close in design, but not exact 1 to 1 copy.
Thanks, pulled the trigger. Wanting to challange myself to shoot under 80 with a sub $1,000 set of clubs
clubs won't do that, lessons will. you can buy 10k set of clubs and it won't improve your game. its the indian and not the arrow. it is nice having a shiny new toy though.
I've never had a handicap, but I recon I could do it.
But that's the whole point of challenging myself.
good luck to you mate, just stick with it. i promise you can't get worse. this is not a challenge, lol.
Specs: Loft Various
Fills me with confidence
Yep apparently that's the way different golf clubs are these days
lol, imagine 1 loft clubs with different shaft lengths. maybe bryson will give up on the one length irons and start a new trend.
Bryson DeChambreau did a review on these on his Youtube, check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyMD8HUsDUE
Handicap 5-20, do they make any for 30-50?
don't worry about the handicap, you can use these. specially helpful if you are a weaker hitter as these are juiced distance irons.
these are budget TM P·790
Hmm. But wouldn't beginner's irons be better, as more forgiving?
I mean. These replica 790s would be great if you hit pure. Which probably won't be what a beginner does, like me.
these kirklands are also good on bad shots. it a fake blade, don't let it scare you. these are chunky. these are more like a cavity back, but covered on the backside and filled with foam.
more forgiving clubs are good when you don't play a lot and don't plan on improving your game. just have fun with the boys or girls. grip it and rip it.
if you want to actually improve your game and play a lot. i highly recommend getting these at this price. you will grow and improve into them.
i started with garage sale ancient blades and was really bad. bad shots hurt like a mf'er. my mates had new super game improvement clubs and were good really fast.
there game levelled off at average. while i improved and surpassed them. they could only hit it straight, well try to hit it as straight as possible. i am able to shape my shots and change my trajectory depending on the wind on command.
nothing wrong with either, but what is your end goal? you want to get really really good at the game, or you just want to be out there every now and then just to grip it and rip it.
@Hugh G Rection: Ah. Excellent commentary. I need to ask more questions haha.
I am happy with my $4 per club Greg Norman Shark red Cross pickup set. Early 2000s I am guessing. Excellent condition and cavity back, good grippy grips. I thought about going to get a set of Titleist 716 as an upgrade but probably an "emotional" buy and buying for looks.
I am still at the stage where I am not consistent enough with my shots. Need more hours of training muscle memory.
My goal is to be able to be good enough on any given day. Recently I can shoot on most days a bogey average (ie +18) after getting a modern driver and adding a hybrid. Also gave up trying to "be cool" and flop/lob all my short shots, instead going for a lower risk chip and run. But I am only playing uncomplicated courses at the moment…
@kickling: bogey golf is pretty good golf, totally acceptable. sounds like you are going in the right direction, good luck to you mate.
half the fun is breaking old habits and mindset. what helped me be a scratch golfer is K.I.S.S., surprised how well it works, lol. i stopped trying to make the ESPN Sports Center highlights and started playing the smart shots. not as cool, but a big payoff seeing a low score at the end. :)
@Hugh G Rection: Cool. Thx.
How long did it take you / how many hours did it take to get to scratch?
@kickling: i started when i was 13, and played everyday in the summer. range and a round on the weekends weather permitting. after 3 years i just made the cut to be a single digit handicap. 4th year i shot even par for a round. about year 5 or 6 is when i was playing consistent scratch golf. then uni, work, and parties came around, golf game slipped, but still can play great golf.
Costco leave me disappointed with their continued 'Leftism'
unfortunately they want to stay in business. 10% of the population is left handed and about 5% are left hand golfers. if you had a business, would you cater to the 95% or the 5%?
My Lefty mate gets all the clearance bargains, crazy prices that us righties just can't get.
they do have sales for righty's, it just doesn't stay available too long as most golfers are right handed. the lefty stuff stays there forever collecting dust, very small market of lefties.
I rocked up to my first golf lessons with a $30 set off gumtree that was easily older than me. My coach was embarrassed for me 😂. Anyways, he hit those ancient irons so pure and on the money that I realised the whole golfing industry is a complete sham.
not really a sham, just more options. a good swing with bad clubs will always destroy a bad swing with the most expensive clubs.
its the indian and not the arrow. you getting lessons is the best thing you can do to improve your golf game.
Costco probably clearing stock due to the lawsuit. They did similar when it came to the Lululemon pants too I believe
I'm very new to Golf.. like 2 weeks in at a indoor range. Just because they close and i go during my lunch time. Don't care to be a pro but hate getting invited and I have to decline coz I can't play. Massive improvement in the 2 weeks but I need my own set. I've seen on Marketplace for like 300 but new at the shops you can get some for 450. Worth just getting the cheap clubs new? If not, is there anything to look out for when you buy second hand?
IMO branded second hand at $300 is a better buy than a no name new at $400. You’ll probably get back what you paid for if you were to sell. Having said that this set will probably be a one time buy unless you’re a brand snob.
It is easier to build on from marketplace than the no names from the shop IMO. Youll end up replacing the whole set.
I would say get a decent set of irons and look for an older model driver on marketplace.
I myself am a goober who wanted everything to match so went all new within 2 months of playing. Kinda regret not getting better before doing so.
Handicap recommendations I feel are pretty useless for a set of clubs. You might be terrible with driver and wedges and putting but pure your irons so U might be a 18 handicap but would still suit these
yes, correct. i played with high handicap golfers that can hit it very well. they are just older golfers with reduced distance.
When will we see the wedges… been waiting a while.
Any Good for a absolute beginner.. ?
