Any good deals on a 4 camera and system ?

How is it vandal proof? Could just spray paint the dome and it's useless

    • +1

      It's an impact protection rating.

Although I'm doubting it really matters if someone gets on a ladder and spray paints/hits your camera with a hammer.

    • Is any camera spray paint proof? Genuinely interested in knowing

      • If you have it high enough. And then some smartass will chime in with "what if the thief attaches the spray can to a drone????"

        • All his previous comments seem to be the same.

          Jenkins@southpark.jpg

        • Then you attach the camera to a faster drone with a higher flight ceiling. Duh…

          • @schquid: Does this arms race eventually end with AI drones patrolling your house perimeter shooting any intruders on sight lol?

I’ve had two both didn’t last longer than 6 months return process was painfully hard, other models are still going after 2 years

      which "other" models? thanks

      • +1

I would also like to know what other models lol

  • Is there any Reolinks battery+solar cam that can do go into home assistant so I can get like motion in driveway captured.

    • +1

The solar cams often have much slower response times because they go into a power saving mode & have to wake up before reporting a detection.

I strongly recommend getting a non solar/battery cam if possible if you want alerts.

      • Definitely going POE and tbh already got NVR and a few cameras in a box but doing a renovation start of next year so just wanted something to see whether I've got packages delivered and if I can trigger some outside lights to come on when motion detected will be a bonus.

    • Only one dedicated camera that can be recommended - PT Ultra, but you also need the Home Hub to act as an intermediary so it's not a cheap option. Other models will either be unstable, or won't work at all (no RSTP). The battery doorbell should also work.

In general, solar-powered cameras should be avoided for Home Assistant - battery cameras have a very strict power budget and cannot maintain a constant WiFi connection without quickly draining their battery to zero.

If you really want reliable cameras in Home Assistant, constant power is necessary, and PoE is highly recommended.

    Vandal Proof

    Depends on the the vandal…

  • Least compelling Reolink deal of the three posted today, is this one as posted by the Reolink rep. As usual.

    Stick to AliExpress…

    • Speaking of which, why isn't … NVM I'll do it

  • How do these cameras rate overall. I'm looking to get some, mainly for external use to cover the sides of the house? Keen to know their pros and cons.

    • +2

The cameras in general work quite well. The only major downside is that you can weird reflections off the dome under certain lighting conditions which can make your footage look weird, or become unusable.

If you don't need the vandal-proof feature, Reolink sell alternatives that are cheaper and don't have the downsides of the dome.

I'm personally a big fan of the Duo 2, which has a wider FOV (>180 degrees).

      • +2

Great advice. Domes are generally to be avoided for the reasons listed, unless you need the vandal protection, discretion about which way they’re pointing or are using them indoors where ambient light and reflections are slightly less of an issue. And even then I’d lean towards a turret over a dome for most usages.

Duo 2/3, Trackmix and the CX810 are the foundation of my installations and are all often cheaper than this from AliExpress.

        • Everything is cheaper there except the deal I'm about to post (I don't even think they sell it)4. And when made in China and purchased by customer there's a middle man in Reolink Aus being cut out

        • +1

Great points, and thanks for the advice.

I've never seen the Duo 3 go below $200 on AliExpress myself, though I am a casual browser. I'll be keeping an eye out.

          • @Matt113: Duo 3 deals have been few and far between, but they were available for around AU$70 from AliExpress just over a year ago via this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/852379

Many people prefer the Duo 2 for its better vertical field of view, even though it’s 8mp instead of 16mp. Keep an eye out for it as well…
