Cheapest International Roaming Pack with Reasonable Data (Charged Per Year) ? Felix Mobile/amaysim?

Hi,

I need to have my data routed via an Australian network (without VPN) so thus I cannot consider local travel SIMs/eSIMs for this purpose. I just need a bit of data. From what I can see, these seem to be the most realistic/reasonable options:

Provider Cost($)/yr Data (GB) Calls (mins) SMS Comments
Felix Mobile 20 4 100 100 What's the cheapest "entry price" for this? Will the $25/mth plan work? I recall seeing a comment about someone sharing a sort of "hack" related to this. Something like activate a monthly plan, then roaming which pauses the monthly plan, and your first 4 month 50% discount will continue to be discounted once you unpause.
Amaysim 25 2 50 30 Could possibly use discounted Amaysim starter packs from the likes of Woolies to activate as credit to use on this?
Amaysim 70 9 100 60 Too expensive

Any other suggestions?

This guy wanted something similar but had a much higher budget and wanted Unlimited Calls/Texts

    Try EzySim

    • According to their "Roaming Add-Ons" page

      Telco Price($) Validity(Days) Data(GB) Calls(mins) SMS
      EzySim 25 2 1 60 100
      EzySim 35 7 2 90 100

What am I missing? Isn't this way more expensive? The $25 Amaysim one is valid for a whole entire year as opposed to 2 days, and has the same amount of data.

Felix mobile seems like a solid option.

  • Felix seems like good value but it didn't work for me when I visited Vanuatu.

    • Was about to ask if it's because Vanuatu's not one of the covered countries.. but it appears to be. Daym. Hope you got a refund at least?

Do you remember what your entry point to the plan was? Do you need to be paying for their monthly plans for the duration of the year for it to remain valid? Because you don't need to with Amaysim

      • You need to still have your base plan which I did. I didn't request a refund at the gime but it can't hurt to ask even though it's over 12 months later.

        • Do you need to be continually paying for your base plan in order for the roaming plan to also remain active? In my use case I'd likely be out of Australia for a while at a time so I wouldn't need the base plan to remain active, so the Amaysim option might be a better deal for me

@illumination: Yes Felix requires you to continue paying the base plan in order to add roaming.

            • @Guybrush57: Ok thanks for sharing..! Well, that pretty much decides it for me then. I'm using Amaysim's $25 2GB 365 day plan. It's relatively expensive for 2GB data in most countries but it's the cheapest I can get for my use case so I'll live with it.

          • @illumination: You need an active felix mobile plan to buy and use international roaming.
you can pause your plan for a maximum of 119 days before you get disconnected
You can still use international roaming packs that you've bought even when you pause your plan.

            • @vinzchang: Ah ok that's useful!
So the cheapest would be $12.50 + $20 for 4GB for 5 months I believe

That would be if I sign up for the $25 plan at half price, immediately pause for the longest period possible and then use roaming for the longest period possible. That is, I presume I'll still have the remaining unused period of the first month to use after unpausing the plan
