FiiO All-in-one Desktop Streamer DAC Amplifiers: R7 $749, R9 $1559 Delivered @ Addicted to Audio

170

Do it all units for headphones (plenty of power, even for most hard-to-drives) and powered speakers, with a portrait touch screen :-) R9 has HDMI ARC for TV too.

Plenty of positive reviews around - including being able to side load any apps like Apple Music from the Google Play store. Main point of contention seems to be lack of more recent firmware updates since release (eg newer Android OS - but not really essential?). Maybe these are now EOL and a revised model/s is incoming? I haven't searched for news/rumours.

Historically above $1k and $2k respectively. I think you could've achieved about the same price on the R7 via Ali-X coupons and upsized cashbacks at one point, but defo not for local stock and warranty.

See difference between models

Sure, there're lots of alternatives - just use your PC (not always enough power), phone + DAC, use a tablet etc etc - but pretty convenient, less desk space, and I prefer to have it stand alone to not pick up my phone (distraction) or use my PC. Horses…..courses….

Usual considerations about all in ones vs separates (parts failure; upgrading separate bits, future software updates/support etc etc)

I settled on a used Eversolo DMP A6 and used Schitt Magni as suited my desk space better (and was cheaper at the time - but not now!)

That's a very very expensive headphone driver. Can anyone explain what the point of this is? I'd like to understand.

The same reason people buy luxury vehicles or branded products of any nature. You’re either into the hobby or you’re not, and if you are then there’s value in it. If you’re not, no amount of “explaining” will change your mind.

Exactly. For the life of me, I can never justify spending $1000+ for a lego set, but people do and that's their money.

God help us ppl whos hobbies include lego, audio / home theater equipment, cars and PC gaming / Sim Racing.

A lot of headphones require more power than what your standard headphone jack can deliver. Also most electronics have a very shitty DAC (digital to analogue converter - the thing that changes bits to sound).

This type of product solves both problems. In addition, it is also a streamer, meaning you don't need to use a computer to play the music. This is mainly a big convenient factor.

For a device that does all those things really well this is actually a very good deal.

Whether you will benefit from a device like this depends on what type of headphones you're driving as well as your source (what are you listening to and on what device).

      • So it would be reasonable for me to think of this as an Android tablet with a good DAC, good headphone amp, and input/output options that help connect it to more devices?

    • High end headphones can provide a similar experience to more expensive speakers. At the high end, better amps provide an audibly better sound experience for those setups. Rules of thumb is spend $ on amps similar to $ on speakers/headphones. All depends on your preferences and source audio.

  • Can anyone confirm the R9 supports HDMI CEC as well as ARC? As in, can the unit be triggered on and off via a TV? Info I've found on the web is inconclusive.
    Thanks

  • Wanted one of these for a while, couldn't justify the cost, ended up going with the K17 instead.

Wiim Ultra + Fosi ZA3 on Prime day was the best deal. Sorted all my AV problems.

    • Yep another good option - though the touch screen (if that's the main interface you want to use eg on a desk vs your phone etc) is more limited on the Ultra vs R7/9 (can eg do proper library/streaming searches on the latter). YMMV depending on your interaction preferences

R7 doesnt have HDMI ARC. Ruled that out for me. Yes, agree on the U/I

At the rate WIIM release firmware updates for the ultra, likely won’t be long before it gets a search feature…

initially ship with Android 10 but will be upgradeable to Android 12

When Android 12 reaches end of support, do we throw away these DAC Amps because of security vulnerability?

    • +3

Yep, I am willing to recycle them for you free of charge 🤞🏼

    • You can still use it offline or isolated in your home network but it is annoying
