      Cow's milk is 87% water.

      • -8

Touché. But I like cows better :)

        • -7

You're getting neg'd but you're absolutely right, this stuff is ultra processed. Cow's milk or minimally processed plant derived milks are far better than this crap. They have to resort to calling it "Milky" cause they can't even call it Milk.

      • Hahahaha.

      • +3

So it's really just cow flavoured water?

    • +5

I agree most of these "milks" taste like watery nothing. But the Vitasoy "milky" line ones are amazing they are creamy like milk and cant go back to anything else.

I'm moderately lactose intolerant, this stuff is 90% as good as milk.

      • You can get lactose free milk these days. It's got lactase added to the milk

      • +2

You’ve piqued my interest! Will give this Vitasoy a shot.

      • -6

That's because they ultra-process it to add a bunch of rubbish and then market it as "healthy" for you. It's the hallmark of most ultra-processed food. Race to the bottom with production price, replace all real ingredients with ultra-processed crap (like emulsifiers, thickeners, stabilizers) and then add vitamins and market it to the general public who lap it up like pigs in a trough.

Neither do coconuts to create coconut milk, and peanut butter also doesn't contain any dairy. But you drones didn't complain about those words being used in ways that everybody easily understood until major industries programmed you with your talking points to try to protect their profits, and your aversion to anything new made you an easy mark for manipulation.

  • Good for barista milk?

    • +4

Personally, no. I much prefer Oatly barista or Califia barista for steaming.

But I do like and use this Vitasoy Oat Milky in lieu of cow's milk for any thing where it's just used as is, just poured e.g. with black tea, cold brew, instant coffee, cereal etc.

      • I agree with this.
My fav is Cafilia farms, but it is always white expensive.
I have oat milky as my staple whilst I'm waiting for sales on Cafilia oat.

        • I also stock up if Califia is on sale. I find that it more often goes on sale at Harris Farm than Coles, Woolies etc., but the best-before is a bit shorter. Not an issue for me because it's still a few months and we go through a lot.

    • Vitasoy Soy Milky is good for barista, foams well.

Ultra-processed Oat Milk, yuck. Just buy the unsweetened real Oat milk that doesn't have a bunch of additives in the ingredient list.

    • +1

      Just don't get so angry?

      • -5

Not angry, just disgusted with gross UPFs.

    • Here is the relatively short ingredient list for you:
Filtered water, whole oats (min.8%), sunflower oil, oat flour, gum arabic, minerals (calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate), acidity regulator (potassium phosphate), natural flavour, sea salt, vitamin D

      • -1

Yep, and it's considered a UPF (ultra-processed food) under the NOVA classification.

        Here's why:
        1. Multiple industrial ingredients not typically found in a home kitchen e.g., gum arabic, potassium phosphate, calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, vitamin D fortification, and added flavouring.
        2. Sunflower oil is refined and added for texture, not just for nutrition.
        3. Natural flavour is still a manufactured additive, even if plant-derived.

This product has undergone industrial processing to transform oats into a shelf-stable, flavoured beverage with added stabilisers and fortifications.

If it were just water, oats, and maybe salt, blended and strained, it would be a minimally processed food instead.

FYI: a lot of these additives are derived from ingredients not even fit for animal consumption, and science if already supporting the fact it's all these UPFs that are contributing to rates of obesity and colon cancers around the globe.

    • +2

Just buy the unsweetened real Oat milk

Or just make it yourself at home?

At some point you just have to accept that convinience = processed to an extent, as all additives are to improve taste, texture, shelf life, etc.

      • -3

Yes, also always an option (and most of the time the best option for your health). Just when choosing processed food it's best to go for minimally processed where possible. Your body and mind will thank you.

        • -2

I agree, which is why I buy/drink plant milk powder from Nimbus.

    • which one do you recommend?

      • +1

From Woolies - probably Pureharvest Organic Oat Long Life Milk UHT 1L. It's minimally processed. Whole ingredients: water, organic whole oats, organic high-oleic sunflower oil, sea salt. Minimal additives: plant calcium (calcium carbonate or similar) is a fortification, not a cosmetic or highly industrial additive. No artificial flavors, colors, emulsifiers, or stabilizers that are common markers of UPFs under the NOVA classification.

I strongly recommend reading the ingredients list of foods you eat daily, don't just rely on the Health Star rating system - it's flawed, doesn't take into account any NOVA classifications.

And if you really are interested in why UPFs are terrible - read this book: Ultra-Processed People (Why Do We All Eat Stuff That Isn’t Food … and Why Can’t We Stop?) by Chris van Tulleken [https://www.penguin.com.au/books/ultra-processed-people-9781529160222, or on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com.au/Ultra-Processed-People-Stuff-That-Isnt-ebook/dp/B0B1TRPQCT]

        • +1

thanks, we normally got the vitasoy unsweetened oat milk which wasnt bad. ill check the pureharvest one since its about the same price.

we do read labels and try to avoid processed stuff. just sometimes its hard to find good alternatives so its why i was asking about your recommendation.

          • +1

@kalithreaver: yeah its very hard nowadays to find anything at the supermarket that's not UPF, besides fresh fruit, veg, some dairy and meats.still it definitely pays to reduce as much as possible. appreciate your follow up and good luck!
