@djprima: if you do deeper down the govt rabbithole the plates are manufactured by Licentys Pty Ltd, and Plate Marketing Pty Ltd serves as the front end of their business for custom plates.
Licentys is a monopoly.

In most Asian countries, rego is a ONE OFF fee (not annual).
Getting a custom plate, is a ONE OFF fee (not annual). PLUS, both go to the government, 100%. No inbetweeners lining their pockets with profit.

@Lord Ra: VIC and many other state still run those one off scheme, only NSW and QLD doing it because people thing it's ok to pay fo yearly fee. NSW now even charge you $31 extra fee when you buy second hand car with the white plate because they realise they can get away with it.
Not keen on paying an annual subscription fee to keep the customised plate. Once it’s possible to purchase the plate outright like other states, I’ll place my order.
