Best option for making phone calls while overseas?

Going to Hawaii soon with a couple mates and wondering what the best option is to be able to stay in communication with each other, and to be able to send and receive calls back to family in australia.

Should i get an internation/local sim when I get there?

Someone said woolworths global roaming sim is pretty good?

I mean we wont be on the phone very much, and we could prob get away just iMsging or skyping each other when in wifi.. But it'd be nice to be able to have full service at a cheap price.

I just don't know what the pricing implications are with global roaming. I know data rates can be extremely rediculous.

Thoughts?

Also what do i need to do to my phone before i go in terms of activating global roaming or deactivating data. Do i need to call my telco or is there a setting on my phone? I'm trying to get an iphone 5 lined up before i go, but right now i got a crappy windows 7.5 LG Phone.

Cheers guys :)

  • Well you'll have to make sure your phone is unlocked for starters if you're going to put in another sim. I'm not sure - but I suspect it might be cheaper to get a calling card and just call back home that way. Mobile phone roaming is always going to be expensive, but landline to landline potentially won't be. You'll have to do your research though.

  • in my experience buying a sim card when overseas then giving the number to your family to call will be the cheapest. even better if your current phone will accept it othyerwise buying the cheapest 20 dollar handset you can find is an option.
NEVER DON'T EVER USE GLOBAL ROAMING. it cost me $2500.00 for three weeks in thailand. now i have a thai sim card.
