  • Good price, but a pain in the balls having to be a 'member' of lots of places to get the discounts.

    • That stops you from price beating at Bunnings or SCA.

    Bugger.

I needed some 0w20 over the weekend for an oil change.

Autobarn now has 6L Valvoline 0w20 for $50.

My Honda owners manual also specifies 0W-20 but it's long passed warranty so I've been using 5w30.

      • That's my plan when out of warranty

    • I would stop using 0w20. Its too thin, especially in Australia.

      • I agree but will keep on using 0w20 until out of warranty.

The car has fixed priced servicing until the end of warranty so dealership will use 0w20.

  • valvoline vs penrite vs castrol? anyone have any thoughts?

    • For their Group III synthetic 5w-30 engine oils, pick the one that has the price that you want.

As long as it meets the weight and specs, they are pretty much all the same.
e.g. fully synthetic, API SP, GF-6x etc.

If you drive a Diesel, then you have to use a low SAPs version of the oil of which Valvoline, penrite, castrol, nulon etc all have.

You can use a low SAPs oil designed for Diesel in a petrol car, but not a regular oil designed for just petrol cars in a Diesel.

Your choice of brand is usually based on preference and marketing. I just buy whatever oil is on sale as long as it meets the car's specs.

Some Diesels don't have a DPF, so no you shouldn't use low SAPS oil in those.

Anyway this specific oil says its not suitable for Diesels full stop.

Fair enough comment about Low SAPs and older non-DPF Diesels.

But moot point anyway as low SAP oil don't come in the thicker weight for older non-DPF Diesels.

I never said this oil was suitable for Diesels.

Penrite = Australian made and owned.

Valvoline= blended in Australia, owed by Saudi Arabia (Aramco).

Castrol = made in Malaysia, owned by BP (UK).

Correct me if I'm wrong. They will all do the job.

      • -1

I believe Penrite blends oils from global suppliers.

You are correct in that they will all do the job.

        • -1

Definitely. Penrite simply wouldn't have the vertical integration that the other two brands have by being part of massive oil and gas corporations.

    • Regular oil changes is key. I buy what's on sale and meets the spec from the manufacturer.
