Look for a cheap radio for camping trips

I'm looking for a cheap radio, battery powered, to take camping…
Thinking about digital radios, but someone said they only broadcast in metropolitan areas only..??

Anyone know any deals?

Thanks.

  • You want a CB radio. The handheld ones don't have that much range - probably 500m from experience? Maybe a bit more. It's hard to tell, sorry. Go with Uniden brand, any model, they're much the same. The difference comes from the antenna. Not sure if it's the same with handheld, but on my patrol I have a 4.5db antenna which is the medium ground between a 3db (hilly terrain) antenna and a 6db antenna (highway).

    • Pretty sure he wants an AM/FM Radio.
Go to KMart OP, they'll have something cheap and junky that will be perfectly fine.

EDIT: even better, go to a few Garage Sales this weekend, you're bound to find something from the 70s/80s or even 90s that was quality made and will do the job equally, if not better than, a cheapie new radio and you'll probably only pay $1.
Your parents or your friends parents may have something in the shed too.

  • Yeh sorry I did mean AM/FM radio.
Garage sales are a good idea, thanks!, and will take a look at Jaycar too, big store on my way back from work..

Any ideas about whether or not digital DAB+ radios will work out in the bush?

Probably going to stick with AM/FM.

    • I don't know much, but I thought digital radios just gave you additional channels. The towers still need to transmit and when you're out bush there's sometimes not much reception

      • Yes, more efficient use of the spectrum and higher quality but coverage is mostly metro. You can check this page, if you have the postcode of where you are going.

    • DAB Unlikely.

  • I just got a portable AM/FM radio yesterday from BIGW for $20. (Can plug into wall or run off 2 DD Batteries)

Works really well. Decent sound for the price!!
