QFF vs Velocity, Which One Is Better Now?

After the depreciation of QFF, many routes see lowered value on Qantas.

I know it depends on the route, but is it still worthwhile to convert Amex MR to QFF? Or we end up with more benefit when there is a 20%/25% boost for velocity?

Probably depends on the route, the time of year and the availability. The difference I found, when booking previously, is that Qantas FF seemed to involve more additional charges than Velocity.

Whats the best way to use points? Buy economy and use point to upgrade? (Is this easy to do?)

Or just straight redeem of economy/business tix?

    Thanks

Redeem the tickets you want. Upgrades are few and far between if you don’t have high status

I’ve always thought of upgrading as a bit of a lottery. I assume most upgrades would be aimed at gold and platinum customers.

The best value is business or first class if you have the points and availability, Personally I only use points for economy if I already have a business class component and the economy cash cost for a sector is too high. For example, if I fly one way to Europe business class and the economy return flight is about the same cash price as a return trip economy; I then look for a cheap points economy flight.

Velocity also devalued recently. As above, probably depends on the use case. Ironically the Velocity devaluation boosted the value proposition of converting to krisflyer miles.

    Both have devalued a lot

Velocity, transfer then to Singapore airlines

Qantas is trash and international availability on velocity is average

  • A real churner collects both.

I find Virgin via SIA is great for international flights.

Qantas is great for cheap domestic.

    • Qantas is good for Emirates business/first international. Did Qatar Qsuites with Virgin points last year and it was fantastic.

      • Only downside with Emirates is the airline fees

I have business seats booked to Istanbul that were $1400 in fees one way. The same flight booked with cash only required $350 in taxes.

Virgin is no where near the additional airline charges

        • Absolutely. The only advantage of Emirates was the First class charges were the same price as the business class one. We ended up flying First/Business from Dubai to Sydney because we couldn’t get two business on the same flight. We had 15 hours in the first class lounge in Dubai (by choice). Well worth the extra points because we could both go in the first class lounge in Dubai.

Both are pretty rubbish nowadays - points got too popular leading to increased prices & decreased availability

I've almost always found Velocity to be better value.

Velocity is almost always cheaper and almost always had better availability, at least domestic.

Like recently return flights with Qantas was $700 whereas Virgin had the exact same for $350. Even for very well travelled routes I usually save at least $20 with Velocity.
